Before that it was called Salem & was populated by people that no longer exist (Canaanites & Jebusites). The archaeological record is just one more evidence to pile on for Israel's overwhelming right to Jerusalem, a city mentioned all over the place in Jewish Bible. @jrswhite7751, there was no nation "occupied" by Israel, but a sovereign vacuum, so Israel exercised her right to self-determination, as did so many others after WW1, including Arabs. Jordan, however, did illegally "occupy" Israel (briefly), stealing the city in war of aggression against sovereign Israel '48, but then in '67 lost her when again aggressor Jordan attacked oppressed Israel, losing city that it had no right to in first place. Arabs are the imperialist oppressors here.
