My gerbil (recently lost his playmate :( doesn't like the wheel. It's frustrating because he just sits around all day, and I wish he'd give himself another outlet besides chewing. I had to take the topper off my tank because he was giving himself bald nose by chewing the bars. My previous gerbils loved the wheel and would run on it just like yours, but Raven just jogs on it for about 4 seconds. Any idea how to get him excited about it (I know, kind of a crazy question)?

@ChristianDogLover I have 3 gerbils. They hate their wheel and never use it. I would suggest letting your gerbil run about in a big space where he can't get lost like a hallway. It is really good exercise or them

@koppsal actually, the wheel is not recommended becouse the gerbils tail can be hurt, but that wheel doesn't have holes in it... its a solid wheel so it's okay :/

I don't pick him up now, he doesn't like it anyway. My gerbil that falls asleep has never bitten me before, ever. Although during the time I was taming them, the other gerbil came out to be hand-fead first.

What the difference between a gerbil and a hamster? I have a Syrian hamster now.

Can they live together or as a hamsters they are single animals? Do they prefer night time for actions? My hamster just sleeps all day long and only at night times does some stuff =)

You oughta look into the wodent wheels. They are great wheels and they DO make them in a 6 inch for smaller animals like mice, gerbils and hamsters. The running surface is smooth, but you can purchase a separate track, which will trim nails.

aaawww very cute..i have 2 gerbils, when i read that gerbils needed wheels i decided to get one immediately, i went to my local pet shop and bought a plastic one(big mistake) £5 of my Christmas money wasted although one of them did go on it , as i came back from the bath they had chewed around the edge, i knew that if i left it in any longer then it might become dangerous then i decided to get them another one but not plastic, i put the wheel in but they don't really seem interested any tips?

I don't think they can run in a natural way in a wheel. They need even more inches so be able to fully run, and straight out there backs. My gerbils will not have ha wheel, I will give them a huge cage and let them out alot instead :)

I have the SAME WHEEL! Same size! I have two gerbils, only one likes the wheel (the other prefers the hamster ball) and it runs on the wheel for a few seconds and then stops, then runs for a few more seconds so I didn't know if that was normal. Expected it to be longer. But my gerbil doesn't run a fast, hard and determined as yours. I think she tries but the wheel starts going too fast for her so she stops??? And she's a little smaller than urs. Thought maybe the wheel was too big. Guess not.

@bightymoosh1 I use the 8 inch mesh ones now because they're bigger, but the mesh surface still makes me wary of their safety. Not to mention the swinging bars. For the most part I think they're fine, though.

@kuronekoi That one is a 6.5 inch silent spinner. They're good for young gerbils because they're smaller. But when gerbils reach adult sizes, the wheel could be too small and hurt their backs. I wish they made an 8 inch silent spinner. I replaced mine with an 8 inch metal mesh wheel instead. I'd prefer a smooth running surface but the mesh one seems to be doing okay so far.

Yes I did get another one, and he's so much nicer. The new one was another brother from the same litter and they had only been separated a few days. It was easy to put them together. If you're looking to get a new one, you have some things to consider. How old is yours? How long have you had it? Is it male or female?  If it's been more than a few days to a week, you'll have to introduce them via the split cage method. Males are easier than females to add. Younger is better.
