Prince used the Fairlight approximatley around 1985 or so and then on through around 1990 in studio recordings.
You can hear him use it sparingly but effectively to create a whole what I call "era sound". For instance the period of Camille/Sign O The Times/Black Album had a dark brooding soundscape of the Fairlight with the Linn LM-1. Also using it to add electronic color to his Funk Fusion albums Madhouse and so on. And then he started to get eclectic with it around '88 through '90.
I saw a Fairlight at a music demo in the 80's From memory it was at the Hodern Pavillion. It was mind blowing in a way that most new technology nowadays can't be. These guys were geniuses. I remember hearing that Peter Cosby from the Dugites sold his house to buy one!!! Thats dedication.
Thanks for posting this. I love historical promo stuff. The Joni Mitchell segment seemed so awkward! I don't think Joni enjoys endorsing things :) And I had to laugh when they used a clip of the Thompson Twins that didn't feature any Fairlight at all LOL (not visually anyway).
Oh jeez, are you people out of your mind? Yeah, it's an amazing sound but to use it for anything today? I think I'd throw it out the window in 15 minutes.
Nothing sounds like a Fairlight (or a Synclavier for that matter). Or a Moog or CS80 or OB Expander or JP8 etcetc. Everything has become so homogenized with loops and soft synths, etc. Gimme hardware, love it, love it!
I remember when the DX7 took over the world, you couldn't give away analog synths, if only I'd known!
@sloiselle1 Yo true that. I mean there are so many keyboards and synths that have come out since that sound maybe a quarter as good, have NONE of the features of these, and even computer software that doesn't cut it also. My 3.3ghz dual core computer can't do what something that 14mb of RAM could 30 years ago???
>Also cool how everything that ultra expensive Fairlight could >do is nothing compared to the equipment I have in front of >me costing pennies in comparison. I dreamed of having gear >like that back then, and now I have even better. :)
True to an extent. I own two Fairlight series III's and what you have in front is lightyears ahead but still will NEVER have that classic Fairlight sound. What you have is just cheaper-not better. There is a reason the Fairlight is still revered. Peace
The Buggles didn't have a Fairlight or Synclavier. Both Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes bought a CMI with the proceeds from the Buggles but used them later. Trevor Horn also had a later model Synclavier which he described as the worst investment he ever made.
It is interesting to see how then people wanted to remove human imperfection from music, and once they finally achieved it now they all want that imperfection back. Interesting how attitudes change over time.
Also cool how everything that ultra expensive Fairlight could do is nothing compared to the equipment I have in front of me costing pennies in comparison. I dreamed of having gear like that back then, and now I have even better. :)
Actually, the names are misspelled in this corporate video. Tom Bailey and Thompson Twins is correct. That is, unless they spelled their names wrong on all their albums!
I didnt see JAN HAMMER anywhere.
Fairlight...where Modern began.

Fair enough. They say the same about old analogs. Remember back when Moogs just sat in the stores because nobody wanted them anymore?
Everything has it's voice. It's a matter of which voice you're going for.

The ironic thing is that the Buggles (who recorded that song) were BIG users of the Synclavier/Fairlight!

But the album credits on Adventures in Modern Recording say they used it and I think Horn's website they say that too.
With the wonderful synth sounds they were getting in 1981 it couldn't have been anything else.
