It's usually just for the enjoyment of the engine's crew or to accomodate some whistle collector's desire to hear his whistle on a live locomotive or to commemorate a special event.
Locomotives from different railroads and even from different classes on the same road had different sounding whistles. Only the train crew and discerning railfans would know which is the "stock" whistle and which comes from another engine. The general public would probably not know one way or the other.
Ya know, as good as train simulators get, and the more andvanced they are, there is pretty much absolutely nothing that compares to the feeling you get when these engines go by. Wether loping along or booming at 80, Steam locomotives are a majestic site to see.
Ur tellin us that '17 had the voice of 1401, the Southern PS4 at the Smithsonian Institute?! The 1401 pulled FDR's funeral train (from what I heard), so '17 must have a Southern whistle.
Am I right that the engineer gave you a shave and a haircut? Sure sounded like it.

no that's N&W 611's whistle because the whistle is now owned by Steam Instatute in Michagen.

That is just what I was thinking when I heard it. Just like 611's.
