I have kept Syrians for twenty-five years and 2.5 to 3 years is a perfectly average lifespan. Your babies are healthy and happy and you are NOT A BAD MOTHER. Anyone who says differently is dumb.

My hamsters don't keep dying. And when they do, it's due to illness. Both Chmurka and Bu had cancer, Szarotka died of wet tail. I have 3 quite old hamsters now, Pompon, Piórko and Pucio. So I wouldnt say dying young is a rule with my hamsters..

Continues from below; Puchi feeds her hamsters veggies and a variation of fruits and nuts; she allows them to choose, as we do in our lives. The way I see it, her hamsters thrive. Mocca was 2.5 years, that's old for a hamster. So a more varied diet does not kill hamsters, as long as it's "hamsterfood"; nuts and veggies, etc.. She cares for the quality of life for her animals - and hamsters die eventually. They are short lived little blessings.

Just to point out something for those who seem like they've misunderstood, or are misinformed. Hamsters have very short life spans. Yet, they can range from an average lifetime from 1,5 years to 3 or even 4 years of age. It depends on the breed and care of the hamster, but even if you take the best care of it, it might not make it to its second year. As for a diet, a vetrinarian approved diet is recommended.

I totally support what eande4e said. I've had multiple hamsters that died less than a week after buying them from Petco and Petsmart so yeah it's not the owners.. it's the fact that hamsters are small weak animals and are prone to illnesses especially tumors.

Most pet store hamsters do die very quickly due to inbreeding. Most of the time; pet stores buy hamsters from careless breeders who don't care if a mother hamster breeds with a son hamster; creating problems for their offspring. Meaning they die quicker. It's not your fault that you were unlucky and possibly received a hamster like this. I'm so sorry for your loss, and

i dont care if i sound mean to you, i am being honest if youve gone through like 10 different hamsters that have all died, something is very wrong. 2.5 years is nothing compared to my hamster who is going on 4 years and is extrememly active, but at least i know how to take care of my hamsters so that they live.
