Nice! i was wondering if u or someone could help me. Well there is this video on youtube with this TITLE: Latin Freestyle S-Factor - Hard To Get (RARE!!!) POSTED BY: albystyle. At the begging of the video there is this funky synth sound wich i think sounds pretty KOO. If you or any one could check out for me and tell me what kind of SYNTH will be really helpful to make this exact sound i will really appriciate your help. Thanks>>>
@4theonly1God I think you are wasting money buying a synth to recreate that sound. You can do it with almost any softsynth. I think you might be dissapointed with a Jx8p, its very powerful but will only play one sound patch at a time. Its a synth for someone that wants a warm fat synth tone, if you are creating modern music then most of it can be done with digital synths, either software or hardware. Most free softsynths will do.
The JD800 is still my favorite for a number of reason's. No digging through menus. It's all there, right in fron of you. Bought mine in the early 90's. Finally had to replace the battery and key bed this year (all the weights were falling of and the after touch wasn't right on some keys). It's like new now. Love it. Everything on my latest song, "Midnight Adlib Session," was done with a JD800, except the solo.
No sorry, it's a great sound, in the spirit i search for... some of the Synths are going away, and will be too digitized.. but let's see, thanks anyway for answer, and let the music play ;)
@SirHampstrProduction I'll chip in with a rfirm NO, whether you mean the JD800 or JP8000. The Junos were simply budget polysynths with one of everything (which equates to one too few of everything, really). There's a lot of analog hype about which has pushed prices to truly silly levels. In all truth, they did a few sounds well - and even then only if you pushed them through an effects or two.
If you can only afford one synth, a decent digital with pots for the filter is a better spend.
retrosound72, are you using any cartridges or is this built in samples? Are any of the cartridges good? I know there is a Jupiter cartridge, does it have good samples? Is there any other way to get different samples into the jd800 other than cartridges?
I play drums, I am too picky about music to join your usual rock band so I am trying to find someone who operates a synthesizer. The person operating this one had some nice sound waves flowing at some moments if you think you might want to try adding an acoustic drummer in contact me on my youtube account. It would be cool to create a fusion of electronic and acoustic with ambient new age fusion in mind something kind of like the music played on donkey kong video games from super nintendo.
I have no plug-in cards, so am restricted to what I thought was pitifully few default sounds (though these can be adjusted). Then I discovered that by using a seperate MIDI controller I could access more sounds (!)
I really like it any, even with the hum I can't get rid of when recording, even plugged into a seperate mains ring.
The below title, when pasted into the Youtube bar, throws up something I did with my own Roland:
Chiptune: Commodore 64, Hammond B4, Roland JD-800; "Cooty"
try to D.i your synth and use a ground lift on the D.i or failing that check your audio cables you might have a ground loop pending on whats going where if you have lighting dimmers they also introduce hum into the equation but yeah a great synth had one and then bought a Jd 990 rack version super.
Too bad of the sound quality, next time try hooking up your synth to your video camera directly, the buzz on this video is killing me, even though you played nice. It was a good demo, but sound Q ruined it. Peace.
Just bought one. They are still being used today live by, such artists as, JM Jarre, Gary Numan, and, Mike oldfield. A beautiful classic synth, that is, going to shoot up in price in years to come. They weigh a ton, and are practically armoured plated. So easy to programme great patches, unlike many synths of today. A true classic as the D50. Thanks for posting. LOL .
Does Roland's newer synths & workstations (Juno G, Fantom, etc.) have authentic sounds from its older synths' pads? Or is the sound completely different? From what I understand, the newer Roland synths and workstations (aside from the V-Synth) are sample-based and therefore can only play a few sounds taken from the its vintage synths, but can't offer the same control or authenticity of these sounds, is that correct?
William Ørbit, Emerson Lake & Palmer, 808 State, Ken Ishii, Astral Projection, Rabbit in the Moon, Depeche Mode, Underworld, Tangerine Dream, LTJ Bukem, Apollo 440, Jean Michel Jarre, ATB, Vangelis, Pet Shop Boys, Faithless, Luke Vibert, Mouse on Mars, Laurent Garnier, MC Hammer, Bushflange, Genesis, and Eat Static.
I had one of these. I bought it from Music man in Reading Uk. when it came, it was in such a tatuy stae, things were broken, or wouldn't work, I t wasn't as described at all. I sent it back. how he ever thought he'd get away with it I don't know. Be warned,. what a classic this synth, that's now shooting up in price, buy one but, be careful. Do not deal with the above. LOL .
This synth, is a total monster, It's out of contol, has a mind of it's own, and will scare the living daylights out of you.. your neighbours will move away, thinking they have been possesed. Built to survive a Atom bomb..and create earth quakes. More controils than space ship enterprize. a trully classic synth, next to the Cs80, and D50, my favourite, but not for the faint hearted, ask your Doctor first, it will scare u to Death, and have U.F.O hunters barmy with excitment. Be warned, LOL .
Without getting into an analog vs digital debate, this all digital sounds so warm to me, and that's despite youtube's audio compression. Are you playing this through a tube amp?
this is my first vid on YT and recorded with a very simple cam. no amp. check my other jd vids with much better quality. The sound of the the digital JD-800 is really analog like warm.
The Roland JD800 is one of the warmest sounding Digital Synthesizer i know. I don't know what these Roland Engineers where doing back in the day when they created this Instrument but they did a great Job. I think this is the last great Synth from Roland. It's a real Pleasure to play this Synth.
Hi, I think a lot of people confused 'warmth' with ADSR settings. Technically speaking, there is no way one can tell the nuances between analog and digital on youtube, mainly because of the compression, as you mentioned. Also to really test, you must play a sine wave on both and compare.
If you have a lot of experience you can tell the war,th of a keyboard in youtube. The warmth is basically the anti aliasing filter so in mid frequencies (youtube range) you can tell the body of the sound... IF you know about sounds and have experience refering the same signal under different circunstances.
I have a JD 800 as well and despite the youtube compresion the texture is just the same. The JD 800 is like an enhanced roland D-50, is like listening the D-50 without any noise, clean and at 48K. New components, new D to A convertors. It is really really nice. Is a Roland with Korg genes. The JV series were more digital, never the same warmth.
I am really trying to listen closely, and I consider myself having a good ear. I also play. I'm not sure if I have enough experience listening closely on youtube, but I will try.
I was about to bid on a D-50, but your comparison with the D-50 is almost convincing me to go ahead and buy a JD-800 instead.
Well, I know because I have both, I have had about 30 keyboars in my life, most of them roland, and I can tell and compare. You have a good hear just by listening a lot and comparing.
The JD 800 and D 50 are different machines but the sound engine of the JD is way better, I like it more than the JV/XP textures. Then the PG-1000 controller is not of much help neither. The only think really hurt the JD does not have is the LFO sync, it does not sync with external midi clock, that is a big pitty.
There is no logical reason why a digital synthesizer cannot sound 'warm'. Likewise, there is no magic reason why playing through a tube amplifier will make the sound warm. Indeed the 'warm' sound of a tube amplifier is due to the relationship between the output impedance of the amplifier due to the output transformer and speaker's impedance. Indeed you can get the same sound using a MOSFET amplifier! Nonlinear distortion of a vacuum tube when heavily overdriven is a different question....
I have owned 2 of them during the last 8 Years. Sold them to buy new equipment. But now it seems that i must get one again. It's irreplaceable imho. You work different when you create sounds in front of this huge Synth packed with Sliders. It looks and sounds absolutely great too. Famous for it's Textutres, Strings and Pads it can create really nice ultra dry punchy basses too. The Resonance is somewhat scary at high Settings and distorts unpleasant ;) Beware of your Speakers.
Generally, no. Korg is more accessible for lower budget spenders--Moog and Roland is generally regarded to be the very best out there, especially the latter.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
how come all the crap you listed is new school digital toys then boy? Come on this a RETROSOUND posting really think anyone gives a damn about your roland fantom x rack? Get some vintage gear.
i also have one, but some of my more harmonically rich pads based on the hearts of space preset , when you play the lower octave it can really stress the speakers, hum, and distort.. is this a common problem?
No problem man. Yeah I like the sine wave slider thing they had going on in those early 90's west coast rap songs. The whistly thing. I want some thing that can do that. My friend has it on Reason.
I use fruityloops , and all I have to do is load up a sampler channel and load a sine wave, that's it (then mess with the enveloppes/effects) or I can do it with 3osc easy... Dunno about reason, I stopped using that a while ago 'cause I could never set the compressor right and the mixer and stuff, so..
My friend and a guy I was in a band with uses freeloops a lot. HE uses reason and pro tools now. But I'm just starting out with recording software and what not so he gave me the freeloos disc and I'm gonna put it on my computer and see what I can do with it. Thanks for the info by the way.
I'm looking for an online guide on how to to open the jd-800 case and perform some maintenance / cleaning inside. One of my keys doesn't work and the frequency slider gives erratic values.
i know thw pads are great but how come no Lead or bass... ive searched all over the net and nothing on the leads... how come?... are they really crap on this synth... or are u in process of uploading video for them ;-)
This is really cool! I'm planning to make music my future carreer.
I've always wanted a synthesiser for a couple of years but the money really pushes chances of me getting one right down. It's a £400 Yamaha MM6. Is it worth getting? I can only push as far as £200. Which can get me a Yamaha PSR-E413 all in one keyboard or a Casio LK-210AD keyboard (with SD card support).
Could you help in any way? I'm 16 at my last year of school and take higher music.
Well, a bit of both. I'd like to create my own sounds and put them to use in my own composisions. I also plan to apply for digitised music course at college, no mayjor entry requirements but I'd help with knowing how to use certain programs such as FL Studio. I'd be playing my sounds into the program. maybe even just use the program to make the back beat of the music. I have been working on a short composision... my first self inspired one.
I have thought about a 2nd hand keyboard or synthsizer but I have a bad past with preowned epuipment of any sort. Of course though I'd ask to test it before it even leaves the shop lol!
Thanks for the advice on the specifications! I've subscribed to your vids ok! Purely because I love your synths, do you work around them? Or is it a pass time? just wondering lol!
i don´t think so....i programmed 3 soundsets for this machine - the jd800 (or better the jd990) supplies wonderful jean michel jarre patches....really a great classic....
okey so you programmed in soundsets on it. i was talking about getting the thing and use it as it is, anyone could say oh hey look my synth is better and then add a bunch of gear on it, im talking abouth the synth itself as it was originaly made, but im sure your synth has good classic sounds, diffrent syth´s for diffrent peoples eh.
i looked for a long time for my beginner synth & i went with micron because it had workstation functionality and i couldn't decide between a regular synth and something that could play rhythms and loop sequences.. plus it's good to have regular size keys... if you don't care about that, get something with more & bigger keys instead of a micron - a used nord lead if you've got $800, it's worth it

I'm not sure why you're getting a poor comment. I think 20 years is great.
karimnn 2 years ago
@THEDEFOCATOR
the fantom is no match for this synth. It doesn't have the wonderful hands on interface, nor the filters!

at around 0:50 it reminds me of Metroid prime, (chozo remple theme)

Was this the same synth used to create the music for Bladerunner?
stujim1973 2 years ago
No,
Vangelis used the Yamaha CS80.

I loved my JD800... miss it very much! Maybe get another one at some point.
coldstorageman123 2 years ago 2
I have owned 2 of them during the last 8 Years. Sold them to buy new equipment. But now it seems that i must get one again. It's irreplaceable imho. You work different when you create sounds in front of this huge Synth packed with Sliders. It looks and sounds absolutely great too. Famous for it's Textutres, Strings and Pads it can create really nice ultra dry punchy basses too. The Resonance is somewhat scary at high Settings and distorts unpleasant ;) Beware of your Speakers.

I want to buy/learn to play a synthesizer, could someone tell me a good one to start with and how much it would cost? Thanks
OMGWTFITSTOMMY 2 years ago
-SH-201 around $500
-MicroKorg around $400
These are two I've seen many people use now and are pretty inexpensive.

imho the only warm sounding digital synth made by roland. its THE pad machine. got the jd990, a little more flexible.
ezdvvy 2 years ago
I prefer Korgs better. But Roland is quite excellent also.
RejectYourMorals 2 years ago
I love roland's soulful sound but korg makes better equipment.
Gmancrap 2 years ago
Generally, no. Korg is more accessible for lower budget spenders--Moog and Roland is generally regarded to be the very best out there, especially the latter.

I have one of these, a very underated synthesizer indeed;)
Voxsynth 2 years ago
i also have one, but some of my more harmonically rich pads based on the hearts of space preset , when you play the lower octave it can really stress the speakers, hum, and distort.. is this a common problem?

Which synthesizer makes that early 90's west coast rap whistly sound? Sorry I'm not very kowledgable about synths and keyboards.
fullmetalfunk 2 years ago
Any cheap synth with a sine wave and portamento(which means it slides note) with a decent high pitch. :)
TheDSC 2 years ago
Thanks. I've been trying to find that sound forever.

I think the yamaha DX synths were usually used for those kind of sounds,

West coast Gangsta Rap developed in part by Easy-E and Dr.Dre (Andre Young) A fuckin smartass is what I was being.
jimmybrite 2 years ago
No problem man. Yeah I like the sine wave slider thing they had going on in those early 90's west coast rap songs. The whistly thing. I want some thing that can do that. My friend has it on Reason.
fullmetalfunk 2 years ago
I use fruityloops , and all I have to do is load up a sampler channel and load a sine wave, that's it (then mess with the enveloppes/effects) or I can do it with 3osc easy... Dunno about reason, I stopped using that a while ago 'cause I could never set the compressor right and the mixer and stuff, so..
jimmybrite 2 years ago
My friend and a guy I was in a band with uses freeloops a lot. HE uses reason and pro tools now. But I'm just starting out with recording software and what not so he gave me the freeloos disc and I'm gonna put it on my computer and see what I can do with it. Thanks for the info by the way.

I'm looking for an online guide on how to to open the jd-800 case and perform some maintenance / cleaning inside. One of my keys doesn't work and the frequency slider gives erratic values.
Any tips? Cheers!

do you think the JD-990 sounds as good... what about the

psychozombiedeadboy 3 years ago
The JD-800 Sound is a little bit different to the JD-990 and different to the JV, XV Series but all these synths are good. My fav is the JD-800.

No more of $600 on eBay. Between $500 and 600. More than that is a ripoff.

youfroob 3 years ago
yes however, Phil most likely did it on a M1, O1/W or Wavestation. Phil (my understanding) was a Korg fan.
BiteMeIWilsayItNEway 3 years ago
The M1 and 01/w came out in 1988 and 1991 respectively.
HOW could he have used these on a 1981 recording?
The synth that was used was a prophet-5.
Reeno
MARANTZamp 3 years ago
those synths came out in the late 80's, makin it impossible to have used them on a 1981 recordin.
Everyone knows that he used a prophet-5 on that track. It even says so in the album notes.

I'm 16 at my last year of school and take higher music.
findlay27 3 years ago
the first question...
keyboard workstation or synthesizer? Will you create your own sounds or will you use sample sounds? The second-hand market is enormous.
retrosound72 3 years ago
Well, a bit of both. I'd like to create my own sounds and put them to use in my own composisions. I also plan to apply for digitised music course at college, no mayjor entry requirements but I'd help with knowing how to use certain programs such as FL Studio. I'd be playing my sounds into the program. maybe even just use the program to make the back beat of the music. I have been working on a short composision... my first self inspired one.
Thanks for any advice!
Martin
findlay27 3 years ago
I have thought about a 2nd hand keyboard or synthsizer but I have a bad past with preowned epuipment of any sort. Of course though I'd ask to test it before it even leaves the shop lol!
findlay27 3 years ago
Buy a synth with direct access for any functions like a Nord Lead or Access Virus. For the beginning one comes so faster to the first track.
retrosound72 3 years ago
Thanks for the advice on the specifications! I've subscribed to your vids ok! Purely because I love your synths, do you work around them? Or is it a pass time? just wondering lol!
Catcha later!

i don´t think so....i programmed 3 soundsets for this machine - the jd800 (or better the jd990) supplies wonderful jean michel jarre patches....really a great classic....

SoundsOfRevolution 3 years ago
okey so you programmed in soundsets on it. i was talking about getting the thing and use it as it is, anyone could say oh hey look my synth is better and then add a bunch of gear on it, im talking abouth the synth itself as it was originaly made, but im sure your synth has good classic sounds, diffrent syth´s for diffrent peoples eh.

im gunna get a synthesizer for my birthday, can anyone recomend one for a beginner?
arthas232 3 years ago
microkorg ?
retrosound72 3 years ago
i looked for a long time for my beginner synth & i went with micron because it had workstation functionality and i couldn't decide between a regular synth and something that could play rhythms and loop sequences.. plus it's good to have regular size keys... if you don't care about that, get something with more & bigger keys instead of a micron - a used nord lead if you've got $800, it's worth it
