Believe me, you don't want to see the video. I saw it and it was moving and jerking around WAY too much. It almost made me ill. The photographs are much better. The balloon popped at 17.3 miles but I'm sure the atmosphere is higher than that. Isn't it something like 63 miles? Does anybody know? Maybe someday they could do this again with a balloon made of sturdier materials. I LOVE THIS KIND OF STUFF.
Depends on the amount of helium. With a fairly large balloon and enough helium it'd go up with no problem. Plus, helium is much, much lighter than air. It's like if you put a ball under water it's going to come right back up.
4 uk dudes just did this type of thing with a paper staw model aeroplane and video'd it at 90,000feet showing the release from the ballon. The plane survived and can be reused!
Man these guys don't think much before they speak. How HEAVY do you think 17 miles of "thread" would be???? Your balloon would have to be pretty big to have enough lift to lift that heavy "thread" up 17 miles. Think about that.
Hello folks. I have assisted my friends in university doing a similar project. I'm trying to raise funds to make it again, but this time with a better camera, to capture that magnificent view.
There's a contest going on youtube, that will allow me to make this project. This contest offers the necessary funds and a camera.
You can help us win by voting the "like button on my proposal video.
Nice job! go to our profile to see STRATOS I being launched in South Florida! As you know Florida is surrounded by ocean water. It was truly a challenge. You can go to my profile or type STRATOS BALLOON on You Tube.
@bennyx8903 It's two guys talking about other people doing stuff.. how are either of them exhibiting usefulness? However, it is my contention that you are less useful than these douchebags, because all you seem to be able to do is point out the fucking obvious.
we, the students, after this project the MIT students have done, it inspired us to do the same thing.. check it out here on youtube "project 55" should be the first one in the resualts of search
There is oxygen at 60,000 feet. There is oxygen at 500 kilometers. As the altitude increases, the atmosphere pressure decreases and therefore the amount of oxygen molecules. Anything around 30,000 feet, although, is too dangerous without oxygen (not to mention the dramatic increase in altitude which affects the body). A space suit is much more complex than dealing with temperature, pressure, and oxygen, which will not be needed for 60,000 feet.
@Unstung howcome that guy from topgear when he went 70,000 ft said if a human were to step outside they would die instantly the same way would in space?
Um, "Anything around 30,000 feet, although, is too dangerous without oxygen" and "oxygen, which will not be needed for 60,000 feet" doesn't make sense.
Which is it, 30k limit too dangerous or 60k so O_2 wouldn't be needed?
@drche420 It becomes too dangerous somewhere around 30,000 feet, why most of the Everest climbers use oxygen (although a few can make it). But the Everest climbers get weeks of training in high altitude before making it to 30,000 feet. At 60,000 feet, there are more problems than just oxygen. Joe Kittinger jumped from over 100,000 feet and he needed a fully pressurized suit. A complete space-suit will not be needed at 60,000 feet I believe, which is what I meant.

GenevaSuspension 2 years ago
you would'nt be able to go any higher than 60,000 ft without space suite as theres no oxygen above 60,000 ft
