  • if any tree in your road is suffocated by the thick concrete laid to your road, please break that hard concrete make provision for water to seep into the ground.

  • we are a group in Pune fighting real hard trying to get them to go underground. the video definitely makes us feel stronger and we will try to save our city too. thank you for posting this

  • i support this, Sweden has successful underground metro train system

  • yes we need metro but its not way of to cutting trees...we can plant again but those plants are there from past more than 60 years old plants who will give those plants...and its not a matter of jealous its matter of to protect global...ppl are cutting one by one tree saying that we will plant it will grow in 5 years but where those plants???? First use the proper travel system, use public transport more and follow the rules of traffic....then there is no need of metro its waste of money........

  • we need metro at any cost, people protesting should involve in planting tree which they hardly do,one more thing pratically speaking if metro goes underground we will be destroying the groundwater table which is already depleted in many parts of bangalore, think practically guys, yes it hurts everyone to see trees being cut off but we shall see the positive side and save the green by planting more trees in and around lal bagh and nanda road.

  • The guilt truly lies in the ineptitude of the state govt. that stood by reaping the benefits of tax money coming from the IT boom and allowing reckless expansion without proper planning or simultaneous improvement of infrastructure. It's too late now and something must give for the Metro to come to fruition. Planting trees elsewhere is the solution, but how can you expect these concerned citizens to plant "illegally"on state govt. land? Isn't that the initiative of the state govt. too?

  • I DOn'T FREKIN CARE IF IT'S UNDERGROUND or NOT...

    JUST FINISH THE FREKIN PROJECT...

  • The government always focuses on infrastructure for the travelling public, and the densly vehicle populated bangalore badly needs a high speed rail link like metro. It is for the public use and a job done by the government for the people who have voted for it. When the same metro work was done in Delhi, why no one raised their voice against the same and when the same work is done in bangalore there is lot of hue and cry against it?

  • India is a developing nation, we could not have planned everything perfectly 60 years back. Now our economy is slowly improving and started development works. Cutting trees is unavoidable however they are not rare species tree as mr.sureshkumar said. These jungle trees can be grown fully in 5 years time and is not a permanent damage to nature. Even honorable court recently said not to stop the development works. Stop Dramas!

  • i agree with you .. but people should understand reality.. the same people who oppose metro demands for good and better transport .. when govt pushes metro they oppose it .. these people are of totally confused minds

  • People don't want to give their property for Metro, few of them against cutting jungle wood trees and how can one expect a good Infrastructre in Bangalore? These people should have protested during the designing phase itself. Every day delay is going to add up cost and it is public money and these people should act responsibly.

  • When the Huge Banyan Tree crashed down in Basaveshwaranagar recently, after standing tall for 400 years, My team went to the spot and collected saplings and have planted 4 of them in order continue the lineage and heritage.

The video is great in the sense that it talks about conservation, after all, but should the video be the last step towards it?

Please document other efforts like Planting of saplings, protests against lake encroachment, Epidemics due to badly maintained areas and so on...

  • Well said vrraikar, silicon halli :)

  • We are not at all 'Anti Metro' but we wonder why people like you are so 'Anti Trees'. When The metro can exist in a way that does not destroy greenery, why not execute it in that way.

  • Law requires the government to conduct statutory public consultations before undertaking any such projects which effects the residents and the public in general- No such public consultaions were held. About the protest coming in late- The information given was that trees would only be pruned, it has only been announced recently that around 400 trees would be chopped.

  • I don't think so they need to cut 400 trees. I had a look while passing towards Nanda road. No one is for cutting trees, all the bangaloreans know the value of greenery. It is possible to grow back these trees. It is not irreversible action. Try to understand the common man problems, people who travel by cars can't understand. Just dancing and making a video will not help. Atleast a documentary kind of video could have helped to understand the ground reality.

  • Comment removed

  • Also, the reason why you did not see trees being cut is because the protesters who you are so against have taken legal action and got a 'Stay order' issued against the cutting of trees. All of us are fighting to ensure the courts continue supporting this cause. And yes, all true Bangaloreans know the value of greenery.. if you are a true Bangalorean.. you too will value greenery.

  • I repeat- NO ONE IS AGAINST THE METRO- we are only against the fact that it is being executed in such a way that they are destroying parks for building stations and parking areas- cutting down hundreds of trees, when they have numerous alternative methods which will avoid all of this. Moreover- NONE OF THIS IS BEING DONE WITH ANY PUBLIC CONSULTATION WHICH IS REQUIRED BY THE LAW.

  • There are already close to 10 documentary videos out on this issue for public viewing.. but I guess you have not bothered to look at even one of them. Instead you are busy watching this video and commenting repeatedly on it. This video has totally over 9000 views and lakhs have seen on TV- so message has reached out. Your ignorance on the issue is evident because it is a FACT that over 400 trees are going to be cut on Nanda Road/Lalbagh if nothing is done about it.

  • I could not find a single documentary of Metro Work near Nanda Road. There are documentaries on Metro development work and also one where they are moving a tree inside the Cariappa park. Can you provide us the links so that every one can understand the ground reality better.

It will be nice if you can share the below information also:

    1. Number of trees to be cut

    2. Trees to be pruned

    3. Rare species of trees which are being cut and their numbers.

  • Ur too jealous mr.mrvinoddell.. Ricky Kej has done something great which ur father could not do. When most of bangalore people are proud of him and his contribution, ur silly comment will not make any difference over here..

If u don't know anything bout ricky kej, just stay the fuck away from this.

    Don't be jealous!

  • None of the protesters are or claim to be 'Anti Development' or 'Anti Metro' they are only against its execution. Please read the entire thread before you comment. We are also against the destruction of open spaces like Lalbagh and Laxmanrao Park. Without these open spaces, developement means nothing.

  • You cant stop developement activity like this , METRO is must and it too late to comment on which route it should take , instead get together and start planting tree , i guess even METRO team would given you some sapling to do so ,

can you do that ? no u just want grown up trees and nice breeze , why dont you go and start planting if u r really worried about future ?

  • Well said 'savebangalore'.

siliconhalli says "Why were they quiet for 3 years and woken up now ?"

its sad that ur still fast asleep mr.siliconhalli.

if ur not interested doing something for namma bengalooru, just shut ur mouth n sit. pls dont bother bout the campaign.

  • The protests are unethical and looks like a consipiracy againtst development of Bangalore. Why were they quiet for 3 years and woken up now ? Agree there will loss of trees...development does come a price...one can plant 100 trees for every tree cut etc, But opposing is uncalled for.

And, this video is a drama worse than the campaign, I am sure Ricky is well off and never has to take public transport. Stop this farce !!

  • Good Video, My dear friend Aloke :)

    All the Best :)

  • Well ppl. Metro is a must for all of us and the future generation as well. We need public transport like Metro- Very very essential or else we'll be loosing out more n more no. of trees for the petroleum/gas industries etc.

    * one question, how many of u ppl who are opposing the METRO have atleast planted one sampling (Plant) in their neighbourhood? Well in case if any of u ppl have not done that, u have no rights to speak about this METRO issue :)

METRO is a must, We need it.

    JAI HIND

  • "how many of u ppl who are opposing the METRO have atleast planted one sampling (Plant) in their neighbourhood?..."

    - come on dude, can't you see them playing music and dancing in front of all the trees to make it grow LOL :)

When Govt planted trees in our HRBR area I used to pour water for atleast four of the saplings. We didn't had any water resource at that time and used to fetch water using cycle from a far place even for our basic needs itself.

  • The documentaries are not on youtube.. they are presentations which nave been shown to various burocrats and are available to government officials and to interested residents. You cant just sit at home and expect everything to be available on a platter for you on youtube.

I am not here for giving you information on how many trees are going to be cut. This is the responsibility of our government which it has not done publicly (against the law).

  • rickygkej says

    1. "There are already close to 10 documentary videos out on this issue for public viewing.. but I guess you have not bothered to look at even one"

    now...

"The documentaries are not on youtube.. they are presentations which nave been shown to various burocrats and are available to government officials..."

and he don't know the exact number also...

"I am not here for giving you information on how many trees are going to be cut."

and why the hell you are making a hungamma...

  • Hence we have ignorant people like you asking protesters for information rather than your government- which is ridiculous. We interested people actually attended meets with the metro authourities and got this information. If you are not bothered about Bangalore- stop spamming this page. If this video bothers you- stop watching it repeatedly.

  • Don't stop METRO, delay costs more money and don't waste our tax money...

I am born and bought up in Bangalore and I am more worried about Bangalore than you. YouTube is public and it is bangaloreans job to stop people who are hindering the projects in the name of publicity.

You would have not dared doing something like this in North Carolina.

  • Yes Metro shouldn't be stopped and the way B'lore is in chaos traffic wise, it must continue at full steam or else any delays would lead to more chaos and more dirt pollution in the city.

However, B'lore's identity has been it's pristine greenery and it's the state govt.'s initiative to plant trees elsewhere cos Avinash or Kiran cannot plant trees on Govt. land. That's illegal, if you must know, but they can probably water the tree like you did.

  • very good video aloke you rock !!!!!!!!!!

when London Underground was opened in 1863 the first underground railway system in the world

is it diffcult now for bangalore metro to go underground ?

  • Very nice Video!

  • [quote] Some body should fight for restoring and avoid trees cutting by alternate solutions. [quote]

Who is stooping you dude. And same people say, We want city like Ny and Chicago. Visit NY or Chicago you will never find trees in metro area except in small park. If you want better traffic management and good road than you guys have to except reality.

  • but not at the cost of "trees" doood

  • Comment removed

  • than stop complaining about bad traffic.

  • Agree 100 % ,. The protesters must stop their drama

  • It is not olly in lalbagh. The trees massacre is vast spread throughout the Bengaluru for metro , widening many roads thousands of shade giving big age old trees are cut, making the roads barren and sunny and it si no more acity of trees and gardens. Some body should fight for restoring and avoid trees cutting by alternate solutions.

  • Great video!!

  • Constructions hav been started :-(

  • If this could be implemented in Kolkata way back in 1984 why cant the same concept with the availability of much more advanced technology and skillset be implemented in Bangalore. It would be a shame really if the thick canopy is sacrificed for laying the metro in the said aread.

  • Well we don't have to compare with NYC and London. Are we forgetting that first Metro railway in India and the 5th in Asia was functional in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in1984. And I believe most of you would be knowing more than 90% of the total length is underground. Yes it is more expensive but in the long run it has its benefits and you dont pay the hefty price of environmental degradation and global warming incurred as a result of cutting down so many trees.

  • nanda road is the best in bangalore , with trees all around , i used to cycle from jp nagar to vijaya high school daily on this, they are destroying it now ? how callous

  • I'm surprised that in Bangalore the Metro isn't going underground. Today we have intrusion-less technology which will create a tunnel underground without any hassle to people living above. Best example is the Metro going underground in Chandni Chowk Delhi. It may cost more, but for the long term, it's a better plan.

  • Why take london , US .. take up Munich.. which is most well connected and the cleanest and which has 90% of the metro going underground ! in 2 sub layers underground ! It was not recently built .. it was a very old venture... If bangalore cant think of it even now, its a sad part. . Look at Delhi, atleast they have done it underground at most of the places !!

  • oh,,and to add I agree with the comment below me from amrith007. NYC is getting a new subway system,,,and where do you think its being built?? UNDERGROUND!!

  • Underground is 100 % Practical. When a city in USA can have a metro train underground under 2 layers of sub-ways. Why can't bangalore.??? All that it would take more efforts to build the infrastruture....Look at London Underground built in 19th Century, When that can be underground, what is stopping for Bangalore Metro to go underground ??

It all efforts and commitment. I support metro but they should not be lazy but be more innovative.

  • Sorry Guys, you need to decide between two, Infrastructure or Greenery. If you choose greenery then you should shut your mouth and not comment on Bangalore infrastructure.

You should come up with a solution and not to protest in this way. Going underground is going to cost a lot. Don't waste my tax money.

The best solution is request them to plant 360x2 trees. In another 5 years the trees will grow.

    Stop this DRAMA.

  • First of all.. please do not make comments with half knowledge.

We are not protesting against the metro or infrastructure.. we are protesting against the fact that during the planning stage it was said that NO trees would be cut.. they would only be pruned.. now they are cutting over 400 trees.

  • Nanda road is a heritage road.. Lalbagh is the only remaining green landmark in Bangalore.. we cannot destroy these landmarks.. would you like it if they pulled down the Taj Mahal for a metro project.. even that building is getting old!! we should bring it down for modernization and infrastructure!!

  • also, there have been tons of solutions proposed.. this is not just a mindless protest.. like your mindless/uninformed post. There are engineers, Lawyers, Environmentalists, Politicians, Scientists, former beurocrats involved who together are making very informed and scientific suggestions and proposals.

  • I am closely watching the funny characters from the day 1 the Metro started.

What kind of trees they are cutting is important. If it is a rear species it can be moved. Eucalyptus Trees don't have any value. We call Karnataka as "Gandada Guddi", lakhs of Sandal Wood trees are cut and only few numbers are left now, where did you guys go at that time?

Why this sudden Drama now? Is it for recognition? I really dont understand.

  • Why cant you offer the other side of the road to save the trees?

You don't want to loose houses as well. There should be some sense when you protest. Learn to compromise.

  • m suresh kumar, when going underground keeps everything else perfectly preserved, why not do that. Also, there have been alternate alignments proposed which will do zero harm to the trees and preserve the beauty of Nanda Road and Lalbagh. As Sunnykej has mentioned.. going underground has its advantages of easy expansion and less prone to rain, etc. About you watching the funny characters, I cant comment on that.. but your post was quite hilarious.

  • Dear mr.suresh kumar,

There are various options for the metro - it can go underground or choose an alternate route like going over jayanagar 9th main or 11th main (this alternate route is mentioned in the metro detailed project report as well)

The important thing is, that people who are impacted by this project were not consulted before the project was implemented, even the law clearly requires it (public consultation)

    Thanks,

    Vinay

  • Dear Mr.Suresh kumar,

its not just about eucalyptus trees, its about the rain trees that will go, other trees and most importantly - about public space that is going away. we have so few public parks, and the little that we have we cannot afford for it to be used for other purposes.

    Thanks,

    Vinay.

  • sorry sir..your example of Taj is far fetched and proves that protests are farcial

  • you may be right that you have to choose,,but in this day n age we can certainly have a mix of both. I do agree that putting it underground may be more expensive. but definetly better in the long run. Do you want to get stuck in the train because the rain/wind brought down a tree and is blocking our new elevated metros' track? I dont think so!!

  • Agree 100 %...let us and protesters plant 100 Trees for every tree cut..and may be rickygjej can make a video to promote that

  • REALL SUPERB EFFORT ! I wish we save those old trees which am seeing since birth !

  • Anybody knows if there is some group or organization working towards saving the Nanda road? I can say its the most beautiful road in Bangalore and it will be a irrecoverable loss to all of us.

    Ravi

  • Ravi, there is a dedicated organisation - Hasiru Usiru, and others like Environmental Support Group (ESG) - who has been battling for preserving green cover in the city. Particularly disturbing is the desecration of Lalbagh and Nanda Road. Please get in touch with 98805 95032 (Vinay Sreenivasa) or my no. 9663366741.

  • I apologize Ricky...wasn't aware of the 350 trees....thought it was only 6 trees. I hope you guys are backing this up with some legal action. The learning I got from the Jagore campaign is that we can make a huge noise through mediums like the internet etc but it has very little effect on citizens and governments. Let me know if can help in anyway.

  • ya Rani.. the protesting organisations have managed to get a stay order on the work for now.. Legal action is very important. Also we are using mass media.. and local media in Kannada to reach out to everyone involved. Many Beurocrats and former beurocrats also helping out.. this video was basically my endevour in reaching out to the masses.. its playing now on all major kannada channels.. lets see.. we trying our very best.

  • Dear Rani,

We are backing it up with legal action as well. What is particularly important is also the fact that the Metro officials did not ask the public before they took this discussion. While saving the parks and trees is one thing we have been pushing for, the other strong point we want to drive across in this campaign is that people need to be consulted before such large projects are undertaken.

  • great job,

  • nice :)

  • how about creating more awareness by including English and Hindi speakers also? :) most of my buddies living in bangalore are unaware of all this.

  • Good thought!!

Can you please let your friends know about this. We will make an effort towards your suggestion.

  • Although I do agree that Bengaluru needs to be making a more conscious effort to save it's greenery....I do not think that making the Metro go underground is the solution.

Firstly the plans for the Metro have been made public for over a year so it is entirely unfair for people to be making a fuss about it at this stage of development.

Secondly people need to understand that taking the Metro underground will make the cost of the project upto 7 times more.

  • yes I understand.. but that is what the protest is about. The plans that were made public is not what is happening now. It was said that trees would only be 'Pruned' now it is changed to close to 350 trees being chopped.

  • If Lalbagh or Lakshman Rao Park has to be sold for a greater purpose, it is not a decision that only a few bureaucrats can take. The public must be involved. Yet not one Statutory Public Consultation has been held by the Bangalore Metro, ever. The Legislature too has not been taken into confidence. Clearly violating the fundamental tenets of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, the directions of the High Court of Karnataka that this law must be strictly complied with.

  • Most people who do not support this protest are either ignorant about these facts.. or probably just do not care, but in ignorance to say that this protest is undemocratic, or nonsense is wrong. About cost vs trees.. this arguement can go on forever. Across the world metros are underground.. I don't see why Bangalore should be any different.

  • It may be expensive to take the metro underground but for the long term it's a better solution because 1) it causes less damage to environment above 2) it's easier to expand the facility; overground metro limits the expansion capabilities.

  • exactly :-)

  • bengalooru ulisi.....spread the message....

    Jai Karnataka.... Jai Bharat maathe.....

  • Not sure we need a Metro for every city. For a fraction of the cost we can have the best quality bus system supplemented by NMT (walking and cycling) .. and while we rightly oppose ill planned Metro we need to raise our voice even more against the monstrous Flyovers that encourage even more motorized vehicles on the roads.

  • Very good video... great effort... thanks

  • Great song, great video. Let's get this message across!

  • Nice initiative, Please let everyone know how they can add or join to this Cause of saving namma bengalooru

  • We need the Metro, but not at this cost. Great effort. Keep it green, the "Delhi" vision for Bangalore is scary - concrete everywhere and no trees.

  • Awesome video!! thanks a lot ... surely will pass this on
