  • Given the two 45watt bulb light fixture it costs about $10/month at $9 per KWH assuming the two bulbs are on 14 hrs per day. Unless you are getting 10 pounds of lettuce from that one fixture, the cost benefit ratio is not good. Some check my work. With hydroponics, you can squish plants closer together or a 1/2" hardwire screen growing a 16" by 16" solid matt of lettuce, or separating the lights and extending the matt to 30", one might gain financial advantage.

  • LOL ten thousand years ?? 4.25 btw nice ligts

  • Quick question.I saw that you have built a reflective wall around the back shelf, how has that helped.and i see that you made a tote into a a hydroponic system.would you want to expalin how.Im a newat this and i got the BURPEE self watering seed kit and wanted to know how you did yours.Hope you can help.

  • so does this apply to weed

  • Lithuania ? wow

  • you should grow some pot bro. you would probably have a lot of fun and get some great product.

  • @TheIronicIdiot CFL bulbs have their ballast in the base. That's why they cost so much compared to the old bulbs.

  • I have been getting more interested in indoor growlights since my 'great idea to bring my tomatos and herbs in for winter" idea blew up in my face over a 2 month period with friends and family watching lol i got my plants living more than sunlight thru the window off a 24" 15w plant and fish fluorescent bulb set on the edge of the pot. reading i thought 48"fluorescent tubes was the best and cheapest way to do fluorescent indoor growing. why do you prefer CFL? thanks for your video and insight :)

  • ive been reading the comments i thought you was speaking in code, then i actually looked at the video....and you aint..

  • u spaz its 10 000 hours looool

  • that's called aeroponic not hydroponic. difrence ?? your plants are hanging , the pump sprey water with nutrience to the roots, in hydroponic you get drippers and plants arent hanging. Aeroponic is better (some say) then hydroponic becayse your roots have unlimited access to the air.. nice project you got there

  • if the lumens is what it is, u cant just add more lights, that doesn't increase the amount of candle power or lumens, not u but in regards to saying people use a bunch of little bulbs... that wont do the trick

  • @themutherfunkinDme Right, 3 bulbs at 5,000 lumens is not 15,000 lumens...it's just 3 bulbs at 5,000 each.

  • @SleestaksRule i was hoping that made sense, idk how many ppl would have read my comm and been ...?

  • @SleestaksRule so what is the solution for the problem

  • @SleestaksRule Completely wrong. Study more before lecturing. Lumens is a measurement of the total amount of light emitting from a source. Intensity x angle of radiation. More lumens is more visible light, and you will want a minimum of 2.500 lumens per sq.ft for growing. Preferrably >4000. What you are thinking of is probably light penetration, wich is only a problem for newbies, since you can easily place a few of your many independent CFL's underneath the canopy.

  • @Hjarninfarkt Alright so help me out, if I had 4 lights putting out 2800 lumins each do I have 11200 lumins of light or do I have 2800 lumins just spread out over 4 bulbs. Also if the later is true, they why do plants grow better with 4 lights vs one when the intensity of the light doesn't change and the space that the plants grow in remains the same ?

  • @pac6010 You'd have 4 bulbs at 2800 lumens. Plants will always do better with more bulbs with light coming at more angles.

  • @MisterBees lol I went on hours long search last night about this very question and found out that lumins don't add i was sooooo pissed lol. I could just spend that same $50 on those 4 small lights and bought a big one. Better be the best damn tomatoes ever lol. Stupid me. But anyways thanks for answer.

  • have u tried feliz 250w 15000 lumens

  • tomatoes lol good cover bro

  • lmao growing tomato cmon... xD

  • what would be good for tomatoes??

  • 10000hrs lol not years

  • @DubSkills lol!

  • unless ur a fairy...

  • where's the weed??? regardless if it's illeagl..only real men have some bud somewhere in their garden..

  • what books do you recommend for hydroponics and grow lights?

  • 10.000 years? its 10.000 hours it clearly said that on the package too.

  • @Inszz im guessing he was using subtle humor :p

  • Hi SleestaksRule, is that 65w bulb that you use for growing herbs just a standard light bulb?? As opposed to ones marketed as growlights? Do standard bulbs work just as well for small plants like basil, chives, thyme etc?

If so that would save a lot of space and money! Those grow bulbs are huge and range from €40 to €80 here in Ireland...

  • I have been trying to learn about hydrophonics and indoor growing. I love gardening and I do plant a lot of vegetables during spring. It saves me a lot of money because of the harvest I get for just so little money I spend on my seeds. But in hydrophonics, dont u spend more money on maintaining it? U spend a lot of electricity due to the lights and the pumps u used. Arent we planting because we want to go green? Can someone enlighten me? Maybe I am not seeing the clearer picture in hydrophoni

  • @mistergorio It can be expensive but you'll have a fresh tomato in the middle of Winter. Aquaponics is a better solution because you get the nutrients for free from the fish. I'm pretty much using HPS and Metal Halide lights no because they cover a bigger area and save on the electric compared to many CFL. CFL is great for just a few plants though. It is fun though.

  • CFL's are good for cold places. Here in the desert they get too hot to run without being air-cooled.

  • I think your getting years on hours mixed up mate

  • can you use the daylight bulbs to flower?

  • grow some cannabis.. you homo

  • the light at 4:06 isnt it for a replacement for an outdoor street lamp?

  • why do you grow your plants inside? is it for fun or you dont have a yard?

  • How many lumens is the sun?

  • It's really hard to get info on grow bulbs which isn't geared towards weed! I have been growing tobacco for a number of years and this year Im growing Coffee plants.

Bulb K numbers.....which are best for helping to get small seedlings/ cuttings thriving and developing root systems? (Trying with herb cuttings for kitchen cil eventually)

Also, what k temp are best for leaf/vegetation production? Bulbs nurture plants already developed?

    4,5 & 6000k are ones Im considering

  • last for those years only if ran 4 hours a day =)

  • grow sum pot

  • @indoor46 spell sum wordz

  • grow weed ;D .. weed is GOOD

  • grow some weed man..:!

  • what are the nuts atop your soil?

  • can you use 2 68 watts to grow tomatoes and bell peppers

  • @mrsmagandelatour Bell peppers yes and tomatoes you should do a micro variety like Tiny Tim. I don't suggest growing under CFL bulbs for indeterminate tomatoes. Tiny Tim is compact and produces plenty in a limited space.

  • can you use 2 64 watts to grow tomatoes

  • how much were the cheapest one because i want to grow tomatoes inside because of squirrels but all ive seen are $400 lights and it would really help if you could tell me

  • This comparison seems to miss the point...

One needs to be finding the greatest lumens per watt ratio...

The best Watt to lumen ratio is the 100 watt equal and 23 watts actuall at 1600 lumens.

The bulb is $3 dollars and can be put in a smaller place.

Anything smaller, or lager has worse lumen per watt ratio.

  • @kingnobles310 The 23W bulbs seem to burn hot as hell though.. maybe it's just the 2700's or the brand I got, but you can't put them as close.

  • @bumr055 It's the greater number of lumens that cause the heat.

The greater the light out put, the more heat u get.

The reason some of the other larger bulbs are not as hot, less lumens per watt.

I have 17 100 watt bulbs running and my temp is near 90 degrees but thats with out my exhaust.

So one simply need a decent exhaust when heat becomes an issue.

    49cents each bulb.

  • @kingnobles310 The thing is with CFLs though is they have to be really close. You can't put the 23W very close so you lose lots of lumens because of that. Again, it could be my particular bulbs that for some reason seem multiple times hotter then any of my others. They are the most efficient Lumen per watt bulbs I have though.

Not so much room temperature problem but they are a tad hot to have within 2" of a plant.

  • @bumr055 Ok, note taken.

But... I keep the 23W bulbs 2" to 4" away with no problems.

Again, greater lumens per watt means more heat. The HPS bulbs are very hot. The greater the lumens, let less near the plant one needs to get. So the less efficient as per lumens to watts ratio the nearer the light must be. Depending on the hood, the light can be directed back to the plants. But hey if u chose another bulb, its ur preference.

  • @kingnobles310 Thanks for the info... I'm gunna check out some other 23W and see if I can find cooler ones

  • go gget a Hps

  • lol its 10,000 hours not years lol the plactic will have decomposed by then :L

  • just dont get why you would waste money growing veg

  • That's all great and everything, but I can't smoke those herbs!?

  • dude its not 10,000 years its hours not years

  • I'm running

    1. 75 watt full spectrum CFL

    1. 75 watt cool white tube

    1. flood/heat lamp at a distance 5 feet away " heat only "

all on one plant and everything is going perfect in the vegetation stage.

going to run high pressure sodium for flowering.

CFLS are really good when vegging .

Best bulbs to grow in stages

    Seedlings - Vegetation --- CFL , Florescent

Flowering ---- I've only heard great things about High Pressure Sodium

  • What is the best bulb to grow?

  • My thinking was the same as yours. Get the largest CFL lights I can find, but you get more bang for your buck using more of the msaller ones. (my eexperience) CFLs are great to start, but have poor penitration (even cloes). Try 150 watt hps. they work great for veg and flowering and put out 16,000 lumens. they dont get to warm either. You can use CFL for supplemental light for bottom of plants. mix with 6500 k you hit the while light spectrum. MUCH BETTER YIELDS AND CHEAPER ON ELECTRIC.

  • How Much Do They Cost ??:D

  • @CrAzYmOnStEr616 the CFL light that I bought Full Spectrum 75 watt that replaces 100 watt lights ran me $ 5 at menards

  • i would personally go with the normal longer fluorescent tubes for the reason that they are longer and give better coverage. these compact bulbs dont have much length to them

  • 4:18 where did you get that straight cfl bulb ive been looking all over and can only find it online.. not at lowes home depot etc, please reply back

  • @xMasterKush They sell them at Menards.

  • ok i have a 26 watt bulb equvelent to 100 watts but it ant bright light the normal cfl light the brand is i think soft white or something but i also have a 15 watt light bulb eq to 60 watt tht put out 6500k more than the 26 watt one which do i use to flower or vegie>?

  • you dumb s.o.b it says 10,000 HOURS on the box not years.

  • you dumb s.o.b it says 10,000 HOURS on the box not years.

  • @40smokd20 hm I have a cfl that lasts 7 years or 15,000 hours

  • Is there any specific reason I always see the CFLs mounted vertically?

It would make more sense to me to orient them horizonatally because there would be a MUCH greater surface area of the bulb radiating down.

I'm not saying you're wrong and i'm right :P, I would just like to know whats wrong with my logic please :P

  • 10000 HOURs, not YEARS ... LOL

  • hours! :D

  • What kind of bulb should I use to start tomato seeds indoors during winter for a few weeks then go outside in spring?

  • Great video! I grow with CFL's too. I bought my veg lights off ebay but they have a site too cfl-growlight com it doesn't look finished but the 1400w veg lights I got from them are the best i've ever used, easy! My plant are growing super fast! The fixture are kinda cheap and inexpensive, but they work well for the money. You should contact them and do a review on their lights. :)

  • led baby

  • Whats in the back room? I cant smoke tomato's

  • 20w is just fine

  • Your tomatoes certainly look like they're getting enough light; I have been using a standard 4' T12 2-bulb fixture to grow my vegetable seedlings for the last 2 seasons and they are very leggy by the time they go outside. After seeing this video I'm interested in replicating your setup. What did you use for reflectors for your lights?

  • 10000 years hehe... does that work with Ganja?

  • ok i just bought the 2700 k bulb like you thats a 250 watts equivlence cfl but i found out it leans towards the red spectrum for flowering how well do you feel it works for veg n or green growth

  • @waylan3 I don't think it'd work very well for veg growth. My plants are flowering and producing fruit and that's why I'm using it. They sell the same bulb in a 6700K but it's not on clearance.

  • @waylan3 -you dont use that range of kelvin for veg,its 6500(blue) for veg&2700(red)for flower

  • dude wheres you weed @?!?!

  • @Malunat13 haha i was about to ask the same question you cant smoke a tomato. what a waste of light bulbs

  • @Malunat13 it illegal.

  • tomatoes eh? ;)

  • 10 000 yeares! ehheheeheheee funny shit!

  • CAN YOU USE CFL GROW LIGHTS ,IN A LIGHT FIXTUR THATS MOOR OF A DESK LAMP 60 WATT MAX, OR OUT SIDE LIGHTS 110 WATT MAX ? JUST WONDERING CUZ I DON'T THINK THEY WILL FIT

  • 10 thousand years lol hahaha wtf dude HOURS LOL

  • for those bigger cfls like the 85s(actual wattage)-what kind of set up(light fixtures)etc. do you need to run them-cause they are def/ bigger than the smaller cfls...I guess what im tryin to figure out is what I need and do differently in order to be able to use the more powerful cfls like the 85 and up...without burning house down - thanks

  • 8,000 years lol more like hours

  • ARE THESE THE REGULAR ENERGY STAR LIGHT BULBS THAT EVERYBODY USE'ES IN THEIR HOUSE YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE IT TO GROW PLANTS ??????

  • @ledgend209 yes

  • @tbtiller0123 damn son thats so amazing how you can use those lights just needs a stronger voltage for brighter lumens thanks . night time right now hope you got some killer weed for bedtime cheers.

  • 3 people are jealous because they don't have a green thumb.

  • @9369cmack "its cheaper to just buy tomatos" ???? i got around 200 off my plants under 200w of cfls last year..the 200w cost me (2kw/dayx90days=180kwhx.10centsper =$18.00 i think tomatos at the stores r like $2-3 for 3-4 so 200t /4=50X$3=$150 worth of tomatos for $18 bucks cost of light..just remember this , for every foot above the plants u go with ur light u lose 1/2 the lumens .ie 10,000 lumens up 1ft =5000 lumens delivered and 10,000 2ft up =2500 lumens delivered..so keep low or add lumens.

  • how many times do i water my plant? becuz when i water my plant the next day my soil gets kinda dry..do i feed it regular water and fertilizer every once a week. is the soil suppose to be dry?....help i dont want to lose my plant.

  • is having thos light in a room there you sleep good for you or can it harm you?

  • 10,000hrs is not 10,000 years......

10k hr life is less then 1yr

  • Hey man, I love your videos I even made a fixture based on the video you made. I also order some 105w cfls from one of the websites you mentioned. Anyway I was wondering if you ever have had the glass part of the bulb become loose and wiggly from having it screwed in horizontally. One of mine is doing that and its kind of worrying me. Its still secure but it is definitely sagging down and has about an inch of wiggle to it. What do you recommend? Should I reinforce it? If so what should i use?thx

  • @Nachito667 Wow, I never had that happen. Not sure what to do. They are so expensive too.

  • @SleestaksRule dude it lasts for 8000 hours not years are you fucking kidding me you think its gonna last till the year 10011?

  • see my video and leave me feedback that is good or bad indoor grow 1 time cannabis

  • 10,000 years!! Correct me if Im wrong but I thing its mean 10,000hrs.

  • 10,000 years! roflmao! nice video anyway answered my query

  • how long can you have them on?

  • CFL = Compact Fluorescent Light

  • Hours not "Years".

  • I got 1 of those puni cfls.. nd i got 2 2700k at the same store. Dollar Tree lol

  • wow ur growing tomato's indoors?

  • @9369cmack umm yea not everybody grows weed indoors buddy...

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 most plants grown indoors are cannabis plants its cheaper to just buy tomato's at the dam store unless its a hobby

  • @9369cmack either way i replied the wrong way...i meant to say not everyone grows plants outside...indoors is more common than you think...but either way my response was kinda off...sorry

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 its cool

  • hours not years lol

  • you said 8000 years lmao light companys would go outta buisness....8000 hours

  • If you want to grow with seriously good fluoro's look at EFDL lamps. They put twice as much energy on the leaf. Two companies I've dealt with are Advanced Hydropinics in Canada or Inda-Gro in the US. You just have to see the websites and look at the fixtures to know for yourself it's a light like your plants have never seen before. look at the grow pics and comparisons charts. Merry XMAS

  • beautiful plants

  • also whats the minimum of wattage to grow a plant from veg. to flower....plz plz plz help me

  • can u put all those lights in a normal lamp fixture

  • I think you mean hours of use not years.

  • do you have to put the bulbs verticaly?

  • @nikelover1994 I read that having a CFL pointed down makes the heat rise to the ballast and shortens the life of the bulb.

  • @SleestaksRule good to know thank you

  • @SleestaksRule ya it does and if you bought a cheap bulb it might fall out. If you are going to run CFL's 24 hours a day then it's best to have them on a angle at least so heat dosen't build up and shorten the life.

  • @SleestaksRule It can but as long as you have a fan circulating air it should keep the temps down.

I hang the lights from wires (sodered to bulbs) suspended from shower curtain poles. Where the wire loops over the shower curtain use a rubber band to hold wire in place. Can move the lights up/down up/down as plants grow and light placement changes. A box fan above the poles to push air over plants/lights.

    You just need air flow....

  • you dont need a ballast for any of those right?

  • For all of the benefits of CFL you can increase yields by increaing lumens per watt with fluorescent induction lamps. CFL lamps produce an average of 75 lumens per watt. Induciton grow lamps are still fluorescent but use no electrodes so there is less lumen depreciation & the energy (166 lumens per watt) is directed onto the leaf with 95% PAR usable UV-IR spectra.

Unlike a standard fluorescent or HID they don't require ballasts & produce little heat. youtube indagro for more info.

  • @bvccooper yo man can you help me what lights should i use for veging and flowering abour 2 weed plants plz get back at me dog .

  • lasts 8000 years? hours you mean!

  • Thanks for sharing this video. Those tomato plants really look so healthy! I am quite sure that they will grow big and delicious. As for me, I am also using CFLs with my grows and have been satisfied with the results so far. :)

  • excellent video man, you are a guru of the grow light. i share your fascination with both plants and light bulbs, i have some tomatoes, basil, assorted flowers and a watermelon vine (gonna try really hard to make it work). and i've been trying to find the best light setup possible for my room. i'm growing in around a 3x3 space that's about 6 feet tall (it's a corner of my closet, i lack a yard BUT don't have to pay electricity ;) ) and i'm really worried about heat. do any of em get super hot?

  • @scubacell They give off a little heat but it's in a large open area and usually a little drafty. I imagine in a closet it might build up heat. When I run my 400watt Metal Halides they give off loads of heat and actually help heat the room in the winter.

  • @SleestaksRule word thanks for the tip, i've been using 3 26/ 1 29 watt CFL's and the temp tends to change 3-4 degrees when they're on, the plants seem to be totally cool with it, i've got some forget-me-nots that are around 4 -5 days old and they've already got two new sets of leaves each, my coleus already has a branch developing even though it hardly has a stem. this is my favorite part of gardening, i love right when they pop out of the ground and grow like craaaazy.

  • @SleestaksRule Thanks for your great videos!!! I heard it was better to turn the big 85 watt CFL vertical with no reflector hood. Im thinking of starting a small hydroponic garden, and using the same 85 watt light you used in this video. Please share your thoughts.. thanks

  • Did you say $34.99 for the larger grow light? If not, how much did you pay?

  • do you put these bulbs in a ballast?

  • lol lasts for 8 thousand years.. .. im just hoping mine last for a total of a year. ill be satisfied..

  • what was the yield? did you get to garnish a few burgers atleast?.,as long as u had 1 meal it was worth it..

  • do all those bulbs use a regular light socket, or o the big ones require a special one? Thanx

  • Have you tried the 400 watt inductions.? With my quantum meter I measured 1,200 micromoles @ the leave with PAR readings between 600-700 nm and peaks in both the UV and IR spectrums. I had never heard of them until I saw them on youtube but they are not widely known from what i've seen. Probably because Home Depot or Lowes doesn't carry them.

  • very nice video. keep up the good work

  • Are you growing your radishes hydropoinically, and if so what kind of medium are you using? I've thought about growing radishes for some time but have no clue what kind of medium to use. Rockwool seems to expenisive.

  • @pvampire I did them in dirt. It took 21 days from seed to full sized radish under T5 lights. Very fast.

  • Years???? Try hours, dork.

  • f you really want 'the best' then just move into induction grow lights. higher lumens then CFL, produces UV and IR and they last 100,000 hrs compared to CFL @ 15,000 hrs. I've been using a 100 watt for clone and vegging and 2 of the 400 watt for flower and bud very nicely. I've not had any spider mites since I went to these since they run so much cooler and the electric bill dropped over 1/2.

  • @brynpav u should try plasma induction, more penetration (lol) then flouro induction, budded one plant under only 45w plasma and got almost three ozs

  • where did you get the dual light fixture? I can only seem to find the single cfl reflectors.

I hope my tomatoes look as good as yours :)

  • @supersoup3 I made the fixture in one of my other videos. The part with the dual light is made by Patriot Lighting and available at Menards. Lowes and Home Depot don't carry it.

  • hahahaha TEN THOUSAND YEARS!!

    i think it is HOURS!!

i'll be growing weed with it!!

  • @bl33ditout

I totally lost it laughing when hearing that exact same part.

    I was like "Whoa!"

A+ For the video though, iv learnd what lightbulb to consider for my Garden :)

Im currently growing a Watermelon plant along with a Lemon Cumber plant.

I totally underestimated the size needed for such growing lol

  • @bl33ditout

LOL totally lost it laughing at that part!

But in all honesty it was a great video thank you.

I now know what lightbulbs to consider in my garden.

Currently I have a Watermelon plant and a Lemon Cucumber Plant.

I totally under estimated the actual garden space you need for such plants.

That watermelon plant vein is like 6 feet tall!

  • Everytime you switch a standard fluorescent lamp it reduces lumen output. The reason is they have electrodes which build up carbon. Thats the reason you see a T5 or T8 get black on the ends. Induction grow lights are electrodeless, very little heat and a 100 watt induction delivers 16,527 lumens compared to 4-5K k lumens for the comparable CFL. Also canopy penetration is better for lower leaf production and the PAR peaks @ 300 AND 700 nm theres video on youtube; indagro peace

  • @ 55 SECONDS IS THAT MUFASA'S FACE IN THE LEAF?

  • @Iwetbeds it sure as hell looks like it lol

  • interesting note on cfl bulbs. majority if not all are made in china. the reason being is that the tree huggers prevent the manufacturers in the US form making them for the fear of mercury in the manufacture process. so hence we are again supporting china.

  • @azthundercloud I know right, I can't believe that we do this to ourselves, yet they 'know whats bestfor us'. Welcome to the nanny state America.
