Because of the heroin, they manage to do a job like everybody else does. If they're strong enough to withdraw after a while, that's great. But sometimes they're more stable and lead a more "normal" life when they keep on with the prescribed heroin.
Effective in a financial way (a drug addict in a program costs a lot less than one on the streets) and in humanitarian way. Sure, if you succeed in withdrawing and staying abstinent, great! Best thing you can do! Unfortunately only the smallest percentage of heroin users can achieve this in a long term. Heroin treatment allows people to re-think their lives, to get a job, to do things well! In these cases, Heroin becomes more of a medicament which allows people to act in a fairly normal way.
Well, I actually have been working in this heavily discussed clinic in Bern for more then a year now. I've met and talk to our clients, the heroin users, learned a lot about the dynamics of addiction and about ways to deal with it. And I have to say, to all of you who object heroin treatment, that in all this time, that heroin addiction exists, the state controlled distribution has proved itself as the most effective treatment so far.

If there were heroin maintainance programs I would be so far ahead in life. Heroin is just a substance from a plant. @darknessofkrish i'm american, i think they've done something like this in oregon and i'm sure the've done this in the netherlands, and they've been doing it in switzerland for many years and it works very well. the govnt puts more resources into education so people are informed and they have much lower rates of hard drug abuse than here in the us (info is on wikipedia) heroin if fucked up but i've known many heroin addicts and they never have a problem getting it and i live in the midwest

Being abstinent to drugs doesn't mean not being addicted anymore. Addiction is just a phenotype of an already underlying problem and becoming abstinent doesn't solve that problem.
Opioid use doesn't seem to have a negative impact on my life, at least I haven't observed any. The only negative things I see though, are the social stigma, the potential harassment by law enforcement officers and other unintended consequences of prohibition. The drug itself doesn't seem to be problematic at all if used correctly. It's drug prohibition that causes these well know problems attributed to the drug.
If it were really that easy to get off drugs by praying to jesus, there would be no drug addicts! It's propaganda, really! Now, if those guys found the strength to get away, that's good. But it doesn't work for everybody. And there has to be something else...

You can all be happy u dont live in Sweden. There is methadone and subutex treatment here but its impossible to get into treatment becuse of all their demands. It takes about 2 years from when u apply untill u have ur medicine and then u should stay out from jail that time and when u get we have to show we only use opiates with 3 urin samples for 2 months before we get medicine.
I managed once to get it, I was kicked out after 2 months for silly reasons.

@mmamolina Physical dependency to cocaine is rare. It's more a mental addiction and the fact using street heroin exposes the addict to cocaine/crack, which are always sold together.

People who have to score illegal heroin will always be exposed to cocaine, hence they use both-they just cant resist it. They are addicts, addiction is a disease, just like diabetes or kidney disease. If you prescribe heroin it takes away exposure to cocaine, which then becomes easier to just give up.

Hi all, I too am an opiate addict. I was using IV heroin everyday for over 4 years. I got on suboxone at first without insurance and had to pay $7 per pill for 90 pills per month plus Dr. fees, which was more than $600 a month just to stay clean. I've since gotten great insurance which allows me to get all my suboxone for free and I have a lot of extra suboxone scripts left over. I am willing to help anybody out who wants to get clean but doesn't have the funds to do it. Msg me.

At the very least, at least she's using reasonably aseptic technique there in the clinic. That alone will reduce infection and aids. Plus, instead of dealing with her addiction alone, in fear of the law, she has the constant offer of non-judgmental help on the other side of that counter. Methadone treatment works quite well IF the person wishes to quit "running on the treadmill" of an everyday user. A lot of people think that becoming addicted to Methadone is "just as bad" as Heroin, but it's NOT! On Methadone you are not high, and are actually quite normal and functional. It's also clean and inexpensive. Money no longer goes to organized crime and the physical damage and risks of Heroin use stop with Methadone. I wish every community had a "no questions asked" clinic...
I have to say its pretty easy to get people into religion when they are going through a Heroin withdrawral - thats quite a sneaky method by that particular organisation.. I think the legal drug use here is great - harm reduction is the main point, addicts who know they are getting thier fix have no reason to commit crime and like the girl here can hold down a job.
Can't function without it. Only downside to prescribing heroin is that is has too short of a half-life. Those heavy users mentioned probably have to inject every 5 or 6 hours.
Why is it a bad thing? Everyone thinks heroin is this really bad, damaging drug when in reality if used right it is less harmful than paracetamol. So many idiots injecting it and not knowing what they are doing and overdosing is giving it a bad name when if smoked it does not do any damage to the body what so ever. If you inject too much of anything you will OD, including alchohol, nicotine(most poisonous substance known) and even vitamin A and caffiene. If you don't beleive me, ask your doctor.
If you smoke heroin you have the same damage as if you inject it. The only difference is that by injection you can take several disease, but the damage of heroin itself is the same in every way you get it.
Well, it messes up your lungs whereas injecting obviously ruins the veins and as you say, has risk of disease, all this is only with misuse though.. Its not the heroin itself that ruins peoples lives - its the erratic lifestyle that goes with it, people always out looking for money, neglecting to eat, to keep clean and be careful when using drugs - a person could be perfectly healthy and have a habit in the right kind of society (cheap, clean, legal heroin, education, clean paraphenelia etc.).
chronic and hardcore longterm users get a legally supply of heroin in the UK aswell! its a very small number of people though... just the problem users, people who have been usin for years and using lots.. and thats when all other treatment fails.. so heroin can be prescribed legally in the UK

@darknessofkrish I am an addict. your logic is something that I have tried and it just doesn't work. i am also a PhD student and it has taken me many years to get it because of my addiction. If there were heroin maintainance programs I would be so far ahead in life. Heroin is just a substance from a plant. I cant understand why the social stigma attached to it is so negative when alcohol, a socially accepted drug, is legal and causes so many problems. Heroin needs to be made legal and accessable

@darknessofkrish i'm american, i think they've done something like this in oregon and i'm sure the've done this in the netherlands, and they've been doing it in switzerland for many years and it works very well. the govnt puts more resources into education so people are informed and they have much lower rates of hard drug abuse than here in the us (info is on wikipedia) heroin if fucked up but i've known many heroin addicts and they never have a problem getting it and i live in the midwest

Opioid use doesn't seem to have a negative impact on my life, at least I haven't observed any. The only negative things I see though, are the social stigma, the potential harassment by law enforcement officers and other unintended consequences of prohibition. The drug itself doesn't seem to be problematic at all if used correctly. It's drug prohibition that causes these well know problems attributed to the drug.

@Ulansananelan I don't know why weed is soo popular, maybe in norway it's legal but it's still same drug that's affect neurons and make same addiction (maybe not that fast, after 1-3 month but still) like cocaine and etc that's affect central nervous system. They just won't like to think that's it a bad drug because they use them.
Well, even coffein in some part stimulant of neurons, contributes better conductivity serotina, but it does not make real addict, but overdose make you headaches.

You can all be happy u dont live in Sweden. There is methadone and subutex treatment here but its impossible to get into treatment becuse of all their demands. It takes about 2 years from when u apply untill u have ur medicine and then u should stay out from jail that time and when u get we have to show we only use opiates with 3 urin samples for 2 months before we get medicine.
I managed once to get it, I was kicked out after 2 months for silly reasons.
Switzerland seems like a human country.

@chevon1920 You're a little wrong. Nearly every heroin user in the UK uses crack coaine as well. Whilst its not physically addictive, its very mentally addictive. People who have to score illegal heroin will always be exposed to cocaine, hence they use both-they just cant resist it. They are addicts, addiction is a disease, just like diabetes or kidney disease. If you prescribe heroin it takes away exposure to cocaine, which then becomes easier to just give up.

Hi all, I too am an opiate addict. I was using IV heroin everyday for over 4 years. I got on suboxone at first without insurance and had to pay $7 per pill for 90 pills per month plus Dr. fees, which was more than $600 a month just to stay clean. I've since gotten great insurance which allows me to get all my suboxone for free and I have a lot of extra suboxone scripts left over. I am willing to help anybody out who wants to get clean but doesn't have the funds to do it. Msg me.

At the very least, at least she's using reasonably aseptic technique there in the clinic. That alone will reduce infection and aids. Plus, instead of dealing with her addiction alone, in fear of the law, she has the constant offer of non-judgmental help on the other side of that counter. I oppose heroin use personally, but the way we deal with it in the US is insane. It's shameful.

Methadone treatment works quite well IF the person wishes to quit "running on the treadmill" of an everyday user. A lot of people think that becoming addicted to Methadone is "just as bad" as Heroin, but it's NOT! On Methadone you are not high, and are actually quite normal and functional. It's also clean and inexpensive. Money no longer goes to organized crime and the physical damage and risks of Heroin use stop with Methadone. I wish every community had a "no questions asked" clinic...

I have to say its pretty easy to get people into religion when they are going through a Heroin withdrawral - thats quite a sneaky method by that particular organisation.. I think the legal drug use here is great - harm reduction is the main point, addicts who know they are getting thier fix have no reason to commit crime and like the girl here can hold down a job.

Can't function without it. Only downside to prescribing heroin is that is has too short of a half-life. Those heavy users mentioned probably have to inject every 5 or 6 hours.

Why is it a bad thing? Everyone thinks heroin is this really bad, damaging drug when in reality if used right it is less harmful than paracetamol. So many idiots injecting it and not knowing what they are doing and overdosing is giving it a bad name when if smoked it does not do any damage to the body what so ever. If you inject too much of anything you will OD, including alchohol, nicotine(most poisonous substance known) and even vitamin A and caffiene. If you don't beleive me, ask your doctor.

If you smoke heroin you have the same damage as if you inject it. The only difference is that by injection you can take several disease, but the damage of heroin itself is the same in every way you get it.

Well, it messes up your lungs whereas injecting obviously ruins the veins and as you say, has risk of disease, all this is only with misuse though.. Its not the heroin itself that ruins peoples lives - its the erratic lifestyle that goes with it, people always out looking for money, neglecting to eat, to keep clean and be careful when using drugs - a person could be perfectly healthy and have a habit in the right kind of society (cheap, clean, legal heroin, education, clean paraphenelia etc.).

chronic and hardcore longterm users get a legally supply of heroin in the UK aswell! its a very small number of people though... just the problem users, people who have been usin for years and using lots.. and thats when all other treatment fails.. so heroin can be prescribed legally in the UK

Its only like 100 people with connections to doctors, its essentially a pipe dream that will never be available to 99.99% of addicts in the UK. We will continue to have people ruining thier lives to get money to pay for thier overpriced, shitty quality heroin, the desperate and the violent will carry on commiting crime. Its crazy that the govt. know where the drugs come from, which people are bringing it in and selling but nothing is done - they don't want to offend the Pakistani community!

in the uk we get a constant supply of high quality afghan brown #2 heroin(aka 'smoking heroin',but its injectable too),and its rarely 'cut' because any cut (like manatol,caffiene etc) is instantly recognisable as soon as its burnt onto foil.
if anything,users in afghanistan and the other 'stans', either get the same as us,or a less refined/pure form of heroin, which is very dark in colour,and much more damaging to the body when injected.

I find it incredible that conservative sectors are still having a say on this, they are always for prohibition, but prohibition never worked in any country, not a single country in the world. And when a government tries to come up with a decent alternative, they brandish their bibles and want it all back to the degrading spiral of repression and crime.........

It is a progressive, evidence based Govt. that does not promise the impossible (to stamp out drug use /abuse)but delivers a highly effective program which medicalizess addiction,(deals with it as a medical problem) while punishing real crimes (crimes against people and property-not simple drug possession). Now the primary source of income for narco-trafficking and wholesaling Mafias is gone. they're corrupting influence is less. Fewer people are dying . fewer people are contracting HIV.

Same here in the UK, yet 90% of the crime is committed by junkies needing money for a fix! Drug barons all over the world are living the high life while corrupting the poor and uneducated. Hospitals are overflowing with junkies needing treatment, spreading AIDS and hepatitis. Legalising drugs is the only way to gain control of this huge problem.
