Oh just a warning for any owners of the DVD, skip the commentary, it's one of the dryest most boring ones I ever listened to. The other extras however are excellent!

@spartandx Freedom of speech, obviously. Marquis de Sade never raped or murdered anyone. He only wrote about it. It has got nothing to do with "the devil".
@LightStijn Hmm i don't know about that. de Sade was iimprisoned many times in his life for mistreatment of his ''employees''. One account says that he locked a woman up and the only way she escpaed was through a second story window! There was many accounts of behavious like this.
@concolossus I know. He was a sadomasochistic libertine. But not a murderer or a rapist. Anyway, it's obvious that this movie is just a work of fiction. It should therefor be analyzed differently.
@LightStijn actually, the word SADOMASOCHISTC come SADO ( for the Marquis de Sade) and masochist from Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch who was an Austrian writer who became famous for hisromantic stories of Galicians.
I finally saw the flm late last night. It was very good. It was disturbing, sexy, funny and sad, all in the same film. Geoffrey Rush was amazing in this film in more ways than one.
when I watched the movie for the first time, I thought it was very funny and hilarious. The second time I watched it was totally overwhelming and creepy as hell. And now when I watched the trailer I have the need to watch this movie again....
@christinah3000 The music in the trailer is by Craig Armstrong. The start of the trailer is a song entitled: Ball, at 0:58 is O Verona, and lastly at 1:18 is Escape. It is so epic; I love it :-)!
The Marquise only held up a mirror & some of the sanctimonious didn't like what they saw. I purposefully asked a very cute, but very religious 22 year old virgin to watch this movie with me. I highly recommend watching the film with a religious virgin. The changes you'll see in them are delicious. ;)
good movie but i hate the big fat guy that is a peedofile and keeps touching her and then at the end , does something that has scared my memory for life :O whoever hasnt seen this , you must watch , its amazing !
The debauched and intensity of this film captured my soul and heart! Geoffrey Rush is an amazing, talented, and brilliant actor! Even though this film is not historically accurate, no one can deny the well played-out plot and talented cast in it!
@msinvincible2000 I never said his writings were brilliant. It's the idea's in it that made him brilliant.
Human beings are cruel. Yes, even you. It's in our nature to do terrible things to each other. A moral conscience, however, is not part of our nature. It's part of our religion, our government, our education etc...
So that's why, "in order to known man's true virtue, we must know vice".
@msinvincible2000 I'm not saying we should all start treating each other like animals now, though.
I'm just saying Marquis de Sade figured out something very important about mankind. Something we all know now, but people didn't know back then.
Besides... it's not like Marquis de Sade raped and tortured hundreds of children himself. Maybe one or two, but... he mostly just wrote about it. That's saying something.
@msinvincible2000 I'm not saying we should all start treating each other like animals now, though.

@msinvincible2000 He was brilliant because he could see into the core of what humanity really is, cruel and selfish. And he wasn't afraid to share it with the world. Just because he was clearly in favor of the sadistic nature of humanity, doesn't mean he was any less a genius.

2. It's not meant to be historically accurate so shut up about "mistakes".
