Today's the anniversary. It was 33 years ago today that the most spectacular Arsenal win in the North London Derby took place. "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! Oh what fun it is to see The Arsenal win away!"
John Motson and Barry Davies - to this day (in my humble opinion) the greatest football commentators of all time, the late great Brian Moore deserves an honourable mention too, he died the same day that England beat Germany 5-0 in Germany.
- "God, you are so cruel! (stated he risking accusations of hubris) - could'nt you have given the man some injury time to sit back and enjoy the spectacle - given all the defeats by Germany he had to commentate on down the years?"
@krakenwave what are you talking about a few decades hav you seen the latest FIFA game the MLS is no longer the worst league and the US national team is 4 1/2 stars few decades my ass try 4-5 years
Went to this game stood in the Paxton end, nearly didn't make this match as i had the hangover from hell but got there in the end. Pretty shocking result as been a Spurs fan, but that was a cracking goal.
When I first saw this goal as a young lad of about 8 it was the best goal I had ever seen and was the reason why I started watching football.. Watch him swivel as he strikes the ball. Not many players could do that and mean it.
I'm American and I have not got a clue as to why this sport is hated in our country. What makes goals so exciting is that each one is special, and considering the fact that they don't score 50 times each game, goals are a big deal. They wouldn't be a big deal if teams scored 50 goals a game, would they? I've been a Premier League fan since I can remember and I've got no trace of English blood.
well i do recall that inone vital match or another, brady was a plague for holland. The man was awesome. Football intelligence of the greatest. a tactical genius.
I remember watching Match of the Day way back in the late 70's i think. I remember this goal and this commentary. I'm pretty sure that after he says "look at that, oh look at that" he says "what a goal by Brady".
I'm still new to UK football, so while I've at least heard of Brady and know that Spurs are The Scum, and this did happen within my memory, I was totally unaware of it at the time. As spectacular as it is, what's so special about one goal against Spurs, when another guy scored a hat trick in the same game? Isn't that more "special"?
Quality not quantity. Its why football will never be a mass spectator sport in the USA - the most popular games are those that rack up high scores - like basketball - and don't rely on intricate tactics or slow-build ups. Nothing wrong with it - its just cultural difference.
Actually, when you look at how hockey is played, it sorta like soccer. It doesn't rack up high scores and it builds up on more than aticipation. That is when the fighting comes in. So hockey can be in one or two ways like soccer.
Understanding the way the puck is passed around and shot in hockey is what led me to finally "get" soccer. That Arsenal also wear red home jerseys like my New Jersey Devils helped.
And whether it's hockey in New York, baseball in Texas, or soccer in London or Glasgow, I hate all teams called Rangers, especially if they wear blue shirts.
But the Islanders are the Spurs of hockey, and the Mets are the Spurs of baseball.
The word "soccer" was invented in England in the 1850s. It's an abbreviation of "aSOCCiation football". Originally it was spelled "socca" then "soccer". This was to destinguish "football" from the then equally as popular "rugby football".
Before you take potshots at the way Americans do things, you might want to check your grammar: It's "spelling stuff differently." As the late, great Victor Borge used to say, "It's your language, I'm just using it." And watch the off-colour language -- oops, there I go again, spelling a word incorrectly.
Don't worry about everyone jumping all over you calling it "soccer". We just use it as a stick to beat you with, and since football (soccer) is the correct outlet for xenophobic abuse, will continue to do so for as long we can get a reaction. :P
Interesting how you "got" soccer through hockey. I remember having a drunken tactical discussion with a Canadian hockey guy once and there was a lot of common ground.
Nothing comparable to genius of this goal in hockey though....
The reason why American sports have to have ridiculously high scores is b'coz the ppl there have very short attention-spans....if their brains dont get constant stimulation, they tend to get bored or hungry whatever comes first lolol...
@krakenwave im not american and im not a fan of american football, but you dont know shit about american football if u dont think there are many tactical decisions made each play and some games are decided by one touchdown (which happens to be worth 7 points lol, to ur point about high score
1. I was at this match. My 3rd away game, at White Hart Lane - Arsenal won 0- 5 - which is what helps to make this wonderful goal all the more exquisite.
2. I lived in the USA for 3 years. The local spring training baseball was the only live sport I could get and even then I had to take a book with me for the crap bits. There were Hispanic pick-up football matches going but English ladies don't constitute their desired spectator demographic ; }
@krakenwave i disagree slightly as big as other sports are in the u.s soccer* fever has taken over most parts of the world, america been so vast in area and population gradually soccer will be bigger in the u.s than most other parts of the world, even if it;s still behind other sports in the u.s, as a football fan i always enjoy watching mls highlights now, always more teams commming into the series, good attendences good atmospheres, only looking up for u.s soccer,
@ShelbourneFCdublin with all the great facilty's over der aswell as the diversity in population aswell as the love of soccer* only a matter of time before a messi or ronaldo is discovered, as soon as that happens it will increase the interest further in the game over day, only looking up imho.
Learn how to write in English and your analysis might then carry some weight.
Meanwhile, your only just-about decipherable prophecy, viz:
"america been so vast in area and population gradually soccer will be bigger in the u.s than most other parts of the world, even if it;s still behind other sports in the u.s, "
@krakenwave no no no no, wait a second. i'm not someone who likes basketball. in fact, i think it's terribly boring. but we cannot say that it does not rely on intricate tactics. there might not be many sports as tactical as basketball. only that.
@krakenwave I understand what you're essentially saying, but tactically, American Football is perhaps the most nuanced sport commonly played anywhere. The complexity of offenses is staggering. But the joy you get from seeing a goal go in after a long build up is certainly something special indeed. Like HENRY scoring today!
Happy days. I remember listening to the match on the radio, and the buzz I got waiting to see it on MOTD later on. Brady ! Brady ! Brady! Brady ! BORN IS THE KING OF HIGHBURY !
