@hg1110 There was a lot of unsubstantiated suspicion that Tom Dula had another girlfriend before/during Laura and the other woman stabbed Laura with Tom's knife in order to frame Tom for the murder, out of spite.
You know, my great grandmother knew Tom Dooley and she swore to the day she died that he didn't kill that girl. She said that he was not the kind of guy who would kill someone. When anyone would sing that song or she heard that song she would flip out in an angry way; sometimes she would smack us for talking about him as a murderer. Too bad they couldn't find proof that he didn't do it....
Prolly one of them 'dam yankee' carpetbaggers done it and framed poor ole Tom.
Joking, lol, but there's probably a lotta people who believe something like that.

@RichAtCamp it was later proven that the murderer was the father of the guy she was having an afair with, and Tom was hung, an innocent man
