  • I enjoy your videos. I also had that info., maybe from "When the Mind Hears" book. I'm also disappointed in E.M. Gallaudet. I'm glad that Clerc married a Deaf woman, but he was willing to risk his life to be part of Dr. Itard's experiment back at his school in Paris. Many or all of students were parts of that. He killed a few and pained many. His experiment was to try many different things to their ears hoping they'll become hearing like pour acid into their ears, etc. Why did he risk his life?

  • great vlog

Thomas Gallaudet, Edward's Dad, originally advised Clerc not to marry a Deaf woman but thankfully Clerc ignored him and married Elizabeth Boardman his Deaf pupil and Thomas went on to marry his Deaf pupil Sophia Fowler.

  • You remarked about no statistics on Deaf marriages during EM Gallaudet's time - u might want to read Dr. Fay's study (vice president of Gallaudet). He conducted a comprehensive study of Deaf to Deaf marriages and Deaf to Hearing and Deaf offsprings, contentment etc - he support Deaf to Deaf marriages

  • Patti,

Thanks for your imputs. Can you tell me where I can find Dr. Fay's study on deaf marriage and the offsprings? Also about T. H. Gallaudet's advice to Clerc not to marry deaf....where can I find the information.

Thank you for your wonderful imput....it opened my eyes and want to study on those issues.

    Thanks,

    Edwin

  • comment by T Gallaudet to Clerc re: marriage is quoted in the film Laurent Clerc by DeBee communications

Dr. Fay's study is examined in the book A Place of Their Own by Crouch and Van Cleve - original study maybe available via Gallaudet or Volta Bureau ILL

note: NAD passed a resolution discouraging Deaf to Deaf marriages in the 1920s i believe due to fear of Deaf offsprings and not wanting them to experience discrimination / oppression
