Our community chorus will be performing this. We will be using the organ accompaniment. Not being fluent in French, I appreciate having this video available. Gives one a wonderful sense of the dynamics and expressiveness possible.
Im in 9th grade and my choir is doing this for the spring concert. This piece of music is beautiful and its way to much for my class but we pull it off like it LOVE THIS SON
I heard that song at my grand mother's funerals... and at that very moment, I stopped crying... it was like if I understood that my grand ma was in a better world and that i didn't had to worry about her... I just smiled and felt so good for those 5 minutes :)
@DRAMan0610 I agree, and I heard this piece, almost identical, in an alley in Rome, coming from the church where a concert was given.... ohhhh soo nice......... an unforgetable experience
This is a beautiful version of this...incidentally Faure was only slightly older than than the Biebster when he wrote this. We look forward to Justin's compositions having such a life!
I have always loved this piece. I sang parts as a lullaby to my son when he was little and it lulled him to sleep even on his crankiest nights. Now in his 30's he still reminds me that it is " like a trip to heaven" when ever he hears it.
after faure wrote this music, he almost chucked that in the fire. didn't think it was that good. what a loss that would be. i LOVE this, and the photos are awesome too.
@Davvanto you are right about that ! and the best version I have heard... I was I Rome 3 weeks ago... walked through the Jewish Ghetto... came upon a very narrow street where I heard voices... as I made my way closer, I heard this Cantique coming from the windows of an old church where a concert was taking place inside... I stood there, my back against the wall, looked up at the windows and listened.... and cried because it was so beautiful... That is the highlight of my trip to Rome
A little correction : the text of this piece was not written by the composer, but by the French tragedian Jean Racine (1639-1699), more than 150 years before Fauré was born.
It is a paraphrase of an older latin hymn. Racine is best known as a dramatist, but he was also a devotee, who wrote many religious works. His last plays have biblical subjects.

Exactly why I'd like to have a recording of it played at my own funeral.

For some reason, it reminds me Brahms' Schicksalslied. Both are masterpieces anyway.

Singing this piece this morning was a joy, even if we chose the faster tempo. Gives me chills.

Verbe égal au Très-Haut, notre unique espérance,
Jour éternel de la terre et des cieux,
De la paisible nuit nous rompons le silence :
Divin sauveur, jette sur nous les yeux.
Répands sur nous le feu de ta grâce puissante ;
Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de ta voix ;
Dissipe ce sommeil d'une âme languissante
Qui la conduit à l'oubli de tes lois!
Ô Christ ! sois favorable à ce peuple fidèle......
merci ...Messieurs Racine et Fauré pour ces minutes de beauté et de serinité
