  • Harlan Ellison reminds me of the Ferengi. (And no, I'm not saying that because he's Jewish.)

  • My question is, how many Harlan Ellison interviews, like this one, would people be aware of without the internet? Oh, that's right, you are using the internet right now!

  • all the honking... showings of support from the passers by? if so, then awesome... would never happen in my country. noone considers art important here.

  • interviewer- "why are you hear to, and explain your sign?

Harlan-"because i raise llamas and i understand that the American Society of llama lovers, and or llama fuckers, was going to be out here today...what do you mean what im doing here!!!!??!!! HARLAN IS THE BEST XD

  • Ellison's works speak for themselves. He has probably the most fertile imagination, even beyond Ray Bradbury. His Imagination has no limit switches. If you use his works without his consent, he will sue your ass off! Announcing that here should make that an interesting case in court. "City on the Edge of Forever", which won numerous awards, was screenwritten differently than Ellison wrote it. He is not afraid to speak the truth. Asshole? Maybe... but definitely a great writer.

  • Shakespeare's innocent, you ass! They didn't have copyrights in his time. In fact, the culture on originality was like the opposite of what it is today if I recall what I heard in English class correctly.

  • That still doesn't mean he didn't steal the line.

  • yeah. it does.

  • I'm taking all of Harlan Ellison's work that is minimally decent (not anywhere near enough of it) and republishing it using On Demand Pub and selling it. Books, Mags, whatever. There are enough Ellison Idiots out there that I make good money with it. Especially with my crappy Spanish xlations I do and sell in South / Central America and Spain. If his writing was better, or more Ellison Puds who pay like the current group do, I could make a lot more. Euro Trash is a growing market, too. FU HE

  • @popper666 harlan elison is one of the few reasons americans can be proud of.. so show a little respect.

  • lol that was random at the end with Walter Koenig

  • Ellison forgot to mention that Seneca stole "What fools these mortals be" from Heraclitus' entire surviving oeuvre.

When's the miniseries about "The Dark Philosopher" coming to TV?

Wherein his acolyte Cratylus trumps his famous saying by paring it down another level into:

You cannot step into the same river ONCE.

As quantum physics understands better than any.

  • I agree with Ellison, kill the Internet!

  • How exactly is J.J. Abrams brilliant? He develops pilots , then leaves the rest of the shows in someone else's hands and only returns to said shows when they're about to end. Besides that, didn't he ruin Alias by showing back up?

  • I thought the same thing. A writer who says he's working in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe and Borges praising a somewhat creative but essentially mediocre action-adventure TV show and action movie director as a favorite writer makes little sense except perhaps as flattery, if Harlan's hoping Abrams will work with him.

  • Abrams does write some things. He wrote MI III, which was the only decent entry in the series, for example.

  • He outs Nick Counter (Hollywood hired gun), he accuses Shakespeare of ripping of Seneca (which I didn't read about in English Lit class, but he probably did, I'll look it up) and he hugs his equally aged friend/sparring partner Walter Koenig and says "I love you!" You go boy!!!!!

  • Many of the stories that Shakespear is famous for were not new stories at the time he wrote them. They were just re-told (and quite well) in Shakespear's fashion.

  • That's true. I didn't interpret it as an accusation of plagiarism but a "give credit where credit is due" comment. There's legitimate credence to the fact that ideas are constantly recycled. Even Harlan has admitted to doing it. I was just pointing out that I'm not nearly as versed in the classics as Harlan is and I applauded him accordingly. Sorry if I implied otherwise.

  • No worries! I just wondered it you knew. I know when I learned that, it kind of messed with my perception of Shakespeare. But I got over it.

  • Neil Gaiman once said that only two plays that Shakespeare wrote were original compositions: A Midsummer Night's Dream & The Tempest. I guess there's room for doubt regarding at least one of them.

  • Well, I really wouldn't know. There are a few of Shakespeare's stories that I have not read or even been inadvertantly exposed to and you just named two of them.

  • that man is Hilarious.

  • All well said, as true as salt, that basic electrolyte of life, desiccant when in excess.

  • Ah, I'm so glad Uncle Harlan had mellowed in his dotage. Bwah ha! "Script Murders! Creativity Assasins!"--City on the Edge of Whatever, ancient Trek slide show parody.

  • I enjoy Ellison, but did he just call someone amoral and merciless? Exactly how many live babies do you have to devour before Harlan Ellison gets to call you merciless with a straight face?

  • God almighty, my writing hero has aged to look like actor Charles Durning!

  • Nick Counter is a corporation lackey, a money-man, a bread-head. No amount of embarrassment will stop him from getting as much moolah as he can. Good luck, cousin!

    SUPPORT THE WGA!

  • You sound like you've known the man personally.

  • Harlan looks awful, but still sounds like Harlan.

  • The last 4 seconds was priceless.

  • That is great! Harlan Ellison has always been outspoken. Doesn't hold back. I like that!
