That is totally amazing. I NEVER knew how that was done. I know how to make char cloth and now I want a flint and steel. I want a local store to buy this at. Do you think a camping supply store sells this?
It's the same method used to make arrow heads. Its called flint knapping. For a flake like this one you need a hammer stone in one hand and your flint spall in the other. Place the flint on your knee for support and aim a glancing blow to the edge nearest your knee. This is known as percussion flaking. It takes practice. Be sure to wear safety glasses. There might even be a how to flint knapp here on YouTube.
Tool steels are used. That is high carbon steel. You can make a "steel" from an old file. However, after forging the steel it becomes too soft. The steel must be heated to a cherry red then quenched to make it hard and almost brittle. This is how the flint carves off the steel and makes sparks.
Nice, looks like a Viking style striker. I use my fire steel to light almost all my fires...Even used it for my pipe back before I kicked the habbit. Matches are a waste of money! I just toss my tin with scrap cotton cloth on the coals from my fire or BBQ when I'm done and a few minutes later have more charcloth.
Flint can be found in most areas. It is a very hard silt stone or old sea bed. Quartz stones work well to as do some cherts. English flint is very common and found where you buy black powder rifle goods and equipment. It is used in flint locks.
You can also use charred punk wood. I make mine from dry, crumbly dead wood I find on fallen dead trees. I use thick pieces of charred punk wood with the fat spark maker and thin or crushed pieces of charred punk wood for the small spark maker.
Great video! The dark shirt was an excellent background, too. I make my own charred cloth from old 100 percent cotton t-shirts (Hanes, btw) and have made many fires with flint, steel, and charred cloth. Better than matches because if you drop the flint or steel in water, you simply dry them off and can use them. Keep your charred cloth dry though.

Well I bought some 'Flint' and I tried to strike it with a bunch of diffrent metals including Steel.. And nothing happened. :/

Me too. Always had a light for smokes and could win every bar bet for lighting a cigarette without the use of matches, lighter or fire of any kind!

I am making some char from punk wood now,... It will take a second session for me as I was too careful and it didn't cook right.

Great video! It answered a lot of questions I had. Now where can I buy a tinder box, steel striker, flint, and char cloth?
urishejk 5 years ago
you make charcloth yourself, use an altoids box for a tinder box and everything else you can find at the camping section at sportsmart
kyoungxlee 4 years ago
You can get a tinderbox with everything you need including instructions from Me. whitehartforge at yahoo dot com
