I have two dogs and they NEVER go anywhere they're not supposed to: because I establish boundaries and respect first and foremost: and they are lavishly rewarded for their good behavior. If you have to hit, then you have no strength of character.

All I have to do to my dog sassy is say NO! In a loud and commanding voice and she puts her head down and goes and sits in the corner.. thats all it takes. No need for hitting or slaping. If you treat your dogs right, then they will be good and treat you right. Its a win win situation, people don't understand!

They aren't devils. I have a chihuahua myself and they are nice dogs. Of course if your mean to any kind of dog they will snap at you. But my chi hasn't growled at me or bit me. and I've had him over a year. My chi is the smartest dog I have ever had. He knows everyone's names in the family. Like if we say where's ___? go find him and he will go find the person that we said to go find. and we didn't even train him to do that. but we trained him to know everyone's names. They are such good dogs.

@libra557 they are in general high strung and in certain living situations can be snappy - abuse (of course) but also too much commotion, little kids running around etc. I have the most sweet docile chi I have ever met, he wouldn't bite you even if you were hurting him. I want to get him certified as a therapy dog. Children are so drawn to tiny dogs, it's amazing, they bring out all their love and protective instincts. My little chi would be perfect for visiting sick or disabled kids.

Pablo is such a little character. Chihuahuas are without a doubt one of the most stubborn breeds of dog. Female Chihuahuas are even more headstrong than the males. My first Chihuahua was the smartest dog I have ever had and the most stubborn. One night my ex spanked her with rolled up newspaper for stealing food off the TV tray, then the phone rang. The dog followed my ex into the bedroom and waited until he looked at her, then staring him straight in the eye she peed on the carpet.

I have 2 adopted chihuahuas who came from situations where they were "corrected" in this way, and worse. All it teaches them is fear. One of them I spent the first six months talking to from outside the closet he was was always hiding in. So sad. Dogs are not hard to train, but you need to have a few brain cells yourself to do it. Glad this person is your EX. I hope you have better taste now.

@TheOobster A rolled up piece of newspaper is not a beating. Dogs are intelligent and need to learn boundaries. When a dog climbs onto furniture and leaps on top of a tv tray, what do you suggest? Just letting them climb onto your tables and take whatever they want whenever they want? BTW - you don't spank or yell when they pee inside because that only teaches them to hide where they pee indoors. You use puppy pads inside and positive enforcement when they pee outside.
