Its no longer in service- its currently sitting back in the graveyard where it will be scavenged for parts and then sold to a scrapyard. I hear that there is a guy that buys old trucks like these and sells them for use in foreign countries.
The only part we clean is behind the blade, you open up the trap door on either side and scrape out all the crap that gets stuck behind the packer with a garden hoe, and the end of each day. Anything in the hopper eventually gets worn away from regular use.
whoa! 4:08! I never noticed that, the way the packer goes up in the back. Could you get some video of your normal truck sometime behind it like that, so we can see how it works, if it's not all closed off. Is that what the part on the packer is for that looks like it's got a hinge all the way along? I've always wondered what that was and how that worked. I could never figure out how that fit in back there and how it was all set up.
My normal truck is totally enclosed, you cant see the follower panel, wich is what you are talking about, its purpose is to keep trash from getting behind the packer. The packer is basically just a big metal block, and these plate sit on top, covering the hydraulic cylinders which are mounted to the back of the block. The plates are hinged to allow them to bend upwards when the packer retracts.
Hey Shane, I was just going through some of the old footage on my computer and I found some of 702 that I havent posted, and it includes some footage of the follower panel. I'm going to edit and post that in the next few days, sorry it took 9 months LOL!
That truck would be a great project truck. Give it a new coat of paint that WC uses. Do a little interior work. And upgrade the Hydros to what they are today. Be as good as new. That engine tho sounds great. DT-466E All the way. If you didnt know its an inline 6. BA Machine.
Oh yeah this is the nice soundin' spare!! I LOVE this truck! It's got such a nice sound :D Also has a fast tipper! Looks like you still have a 16 in. gap though. That's really weird that your temperature there changed so dramatically! Thanks for the video; this one will be in my favorites (if it freakin' works)!
Yeah ive always loved the way these trucks sound.Wished they performed as good as they sound!
The crusher panel on this truck has the gap you mentioned due to it being broken where the cylinder is mounted to the body,so it wont go all the way down like the other trucks of this type do.
I really like your videos....the editing, music and all the effort you put in to painting a picture of a hard working dude.....putting up with shit all day!
Id rather be putting up with this type of shit than the stuff other people put up with..you know, like other people! Ive worked for Boeing,Cessna aircraft, and some other places and it about drove me crazy! There is no boss breathing down my neck here, and I make good money.
My office has ten wheels and smells of diesel exhaust and garbage...and I love it!
What the heck was that you thrown in the hopper?! It looked like a body bag! Literally! When they said to you to take everything they put out I assume people now count as well...
That tote dumper kicks @ss. My peice of junk Bayne dumper just doesnt give me the height and speed like yours. That truck, 712?, may be crappy to you but man it would be great on my routes. Thanks for another great film.
This spare,702,has one of the better tippers, its not as sloppy and hard to control as some of the others.
I hear what youre saying about the Bayne,we had those at WM when I worked there and I hated them too, they were slow, not very strong, and had a tendency to break. These tippers you see here are about the most solid and reliable you will find anywhere. They dont even get greased enough but still keep going year after year..
Duh! I just now noticed the truck number in your title. I bet that your tipper cost a good $4K+. I think thats why our district buys the cheap Baynes, the helpers love to pack tote dumpers here so they gave up buying the better, more expensive tippers.
These tippers are made right here in Wichita by a guy named Gary Shartzer,I think he sells these nationally now. They are expensive, but like I said, they are the most durable of any model ive seen by far.
Ahh you are getting a taste of that warm front thats going through as well eh? Severe weather to follow here apparently! Ya that truck albeit an old slow machine sounds not too shabby.. has a nice low growly exhaust. The one thing I don't like about it is whatever the beeper was inside the cab sounds EXACTLY like an old alarm clock I used to have
Ah yeah it was 70 monday and as im writing this on tuesday evening its frickin cold and snowin like crazy again...that beeper is the most obnoxiously annoying turn signal/flasher indicator I have ever had the displeasure to work with...
It was powdered cheese, smelled just like the kind that comes with macaroni and cheese.
I have no idea why those people had so much of it in their cart, but it was alot. The inside of the truck body was smeared with it from front to back when i emptied it at the transfer.
You mentioning about the powdered cheese, That reminds me.
Lucky you didn't have one of the helpers that I had back in 1998 on one of my heavy routes when we did it the old way. The darn fool would eat grapes, crackers & just about any kind of good looking food right out of the hopper! Ugh, He made me sick!
It's too bad that the ugliest, slowest and most non-efficient trucks sound the best! lol You guys got some weird weather there too, snowstorm one day, sunny and warm the next lol It seems like those shopping cart bins are easier to drag to the tipper, rather than regular Toter style cans. Also, I like the "Cloverfield" style, gives it a more "in you shoes" point of view. Awesome video as always!
I am curious whats with your regular truck?? Meaning is it sick or something.I noticed the packer assistant thing is mounted same direction as the packer runs..And the packer is slow on this old beast as you call it..That really slows you down!!!
Of all things they downed my truck for the crack in the windshield.Apparently you cant schedule an appointment for a specific time with the glass repair people so they have to let it sit on the lot until they show up.
Sounds like a silly reason for this truck to sit on the lot for a day when it should be out workin..makin money..
yeah it cheers me up too. Ive always liked this style of truck. If your pete goes down again and if your driving this truck. I like to see a vid of this truck dumping at the transfer station. If you could.
With these trucks if you operate the lifter right when the packer either fully retracts or fully extends, excess hydraulic pressure is diverted to the lifter, giving it a serious boost in power and speed.I dont think its intended to be that way,its an old design...
You have to be careful with it,usually you want to avoid doing it because it will destroy the carts.
But it can be used to your advantage, particularly with extra heavy or overfilled bins, with minimal bin damage if you know how to work it.
I used the "boost" on the second cart you refer to,but I let go of the handle at the point where the cart is about halfway into the hopper, which throws the trash in with extra force but doesnt slam the cart nearly as violently as it would if you gave it everything.
See the response i gave to Mitch for the tipper info.
These old trucks here all all International chassis,I think they bought the first one back in 92 or 93.Before that everything was done with rear loaders here.
do they have this truck still

that hopper's nice and filthy...do you have to clean it out sometimes, or do y'all have a cleaning crew?
