The level at which Heifetz plays at starting around 2:05 is so much higher than this top-notch student it is almost unbelievable. While the student is playing notes on the page, Heifetz is playing MUSIC.
@DualThunder Not necessarily true. Teachers do do masterclasses on pieces they haven't learned or performed themselves if a student comes in with it. Typically they still have a lot of advice to offer even if they haven't played the piece for themselves.
Of course, I'm sure Mr. Heifetz was "familiar" with both Wieniawski Polonaises.
Varujan Kojian did so very well if you ask me...I'd have been too frozen to play even one note Also there's the final video now on youtube where he plays the Bach Chaccone in the masterclass and he does fantastic in the 2nd half of it.
.... I can't believe this guy... why does he even dare to play in front of him? He can't play the tempo steadily! come on, that's one of the basics no? get a metronome
Friedman was my teachers teacher at Manhattan, so it is cool to see your roots in action and to hear the same things here as I did in every lesson. Thanks for posting these.
In 1987, Mr. Friedman was involved in an auto accident that injured his right shoulder and made playing the violin impossible for any sustained amount of time, thus ending whatever concert and recording careers he may have had. He turned to teaching thereafter.

I bet Jascha was sight reading and still was able to make proper musical demonstration on the violin.

he would be a great teacher, he would bring up virtuoso's he seems like a genuinly nice person but he seems like very strict and knows what he wants.

I'm sorry but that pencil tapping does nobody any good--just makes this marvelous violinist nervous. Anyone know his name?
