@cwhd73 Who knows? Voting is one of the most patriotic things you can do, so does it matter? Our two party system wouldn't work if we only had one party.
We all know the historical origins of this piece, but that doesn't mean it can't speak outside of that context, obviously it does! It's pure music before it's French or Russian -- and its energy, power, courage and color give it absolutely universal appeal.
tchaikovsky wrote this in mind of the defeat of napoleon's invasion of russia back in 1812. (the french drivin out by the cold cold winter.) "the war of 1812" in the u.s.was a whole different thing. tchaikovsky never reguarded this piece as one of his best works.
Bè vedere gli americani che sventolano bandiere americane con un inno filo patriotico russo scritto da Tchaikovsky per liberazione della russia.....fà sorridere.. :)
Some truly staggeringly poor history being thrown about in here. The Anglo-American war of 1812 was a US invasion of British Canada. The invasion was a bloody, pathetic disaster that sent tens of thousands of poorly trained American militamen home maimed and in coffins. British forces later landed in Washington and burnt what is now known as the White House. In so much as US territorial ambitions were repulsed, it was an American defeat. In considered fairness, it is usually described as a draw.
of course it is, but if the people who mistakenly think this is about the anglo-american war also think the US won that war - the same people who think america won the vietnam war, presumably - then surely correcting that is just as important as pointing out this was composed by a russian to celebrate the actual war of 1812?
How do you make the leap that if people think we won the War of 1812 that they automatically think we won Vietnam. Im not saying the US won 1812, but the British considered it a "massive defeat of economic, military, and teritorial proportion."
haha its kinda funny to watch everyone fight over whether or not us americans should play this song on the 4th of july. i mean cmon....music shouldnt belong to any one country. america also had a huge war in 1812 when the british tried to take us over again, and thats why we find this song so appropriate on the 4th of july (a.k.a. independece day) i mean saying that we cant play this song is like us going over to russia and saying they cant play american songs. haha cmon people!we're all idiots!
who cares as far what war it goes with. It's a song for celebration of victory and thats all that matters. Americans had the war in 1812 and the russians with the french in 1812 and guess what both US and Russia won so who cares/
look people, this is just a brilliant piece of music, which fireworks go conveniently well with. Last year they played the "Dropkick Murphey's" song "Shipping up to Boston" which is about an Irish sailor looking for his amputated leg. It's not the historical background of the music that matters here, it's the ambience it creates.

why do americans think they can play this on their independence day many of them don't even get that the song has to do with the napoleon, his emperorship, and his invasion of russia (which they thankfully over threw him) americans have no right thinking that the song has ANY connection...DISGRACEFUL! I used to be an american and i find it EXTREMELY distasteful)
But u know that's why on your Independent Day plays Russian and German classic music?=)))) I think that there are only ameircan Stars and Stripes in your country=)))))))))))
It doesn't, it has to do with the Russians beating back Napoleon I think. But unless your talking hockey there's no such think as Canada kicking anyone's ass. Esp. considering that 1812 was 55 years before it even became a country.
The 1812 is actually in commemoration of Russia repelling Napoleon's assault on Moscow in 1812. That is why you get both Russian and French songs (particularly La Marseillaise). The five cannon are intended to represent the defenders of the Russian city while the song represents the French aggressors. There is NO actual historical connection of this song with anything in US history despite it being a staple of most Fourth of July celebrations.
no it's about Russian Empire win in war against Napaleon!!!!!Tchaikovsky used french anthem for showing how French army came to Russia and then was destroyed=)
This was 2007, and yes it sprinkled as the day went on, but I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. I travelled from Ohio just for this concert, and it fulfilled my expectations--I loved it!
