If playing with a pick makes you a bad bassist, then Geddy Lee is a bad bassist (one of Cliff's main influences) as well as Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, etc... The pick vs. fingers argument is so played out. As a bassist, I use either depending on the situation. Real musicians don't think in the terms you seem to.

When you see a live video and there are crowd sounds, it's because there are mics for the crowd. If those mics aren't there, you just hear the musicians, and it ends up sounding kind of dry without any crowd or studio trickery.
