It's marked p and pp with the occasional as well as "et tres leger". A child this age has no conception of what Debussy was going for and shouldn't be allowed to go near it. There are better pieces they can attack with their youthful zeal. Hold back these pieces for for a later date - when the the concept of "music" finally drops in.

oh my god. im doing this for my grade8 exam, im 16 this year, and he's speed is 10x faster than mine. abit embarassed XD hahaaa. i only started to learn piano when i was 9 ( or 8) LOL! this kid is talented ! <3
I'm always iffy when I see a video with a 8 or 9 year old playing big songs. I find a lot of them play technically correct but they don't really understand the feeling the music is suppose to be giving, something that can't really be taught. But this kid was very good technically and feeling wise :)
No worries, I'm in the same boat. I'm 17 and just starting this piece. But don't worry about it, it's how you play it. I used to be a wreck at competitions because I was always soo old compared to everyone else, but you have to put that behind you, aim to play better than this kid!
Just remember that just because a little kid can play the piano which, just requires memorization and practice, does not mean he can CREATE beautiful music you see. So do not lose faith in yourself.
Great job for a pianist that age, only I don't like his tone. Maybe I'll post my 'version' of this arabesque soon (I play it a bit like débussy did it - more freedom in tempo)
This performance misses some dynamics...
(Just for the record he made 4 mistakes)
But offcourse, extremely well done for a 9 year old - débussy is hard to play and to understand.
I disagree. His dynamics are "missing" because of the way it is recorded. I think he does a good job of it, mostly. Tone is excellent, its just the recording.
There is a section in the middle that is played too slowly, with incorrect timing of some notes. Not being harsh, needs to be pointed out so he learns.
Also, its good to get into the music and enjoy what you are playing... but some of the posing is excessive. A little showmanship is good, but too much and it becomes a bit comical.
Yes, this is the way to play it!
