  • U r saving my life in finals

  • your helping for tommorows test..

  • your helping me study for my spanish test! ;p

  • huh this video is really boring i have to watch this guy in my spanish class with Mrs.Mellanaro he is soo boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @12lovebuggy Damnn ikr, i have to watch him for hw , and am effing dying here!!!! >8/

  • Correct video and very helpful- BUT there is one minor mistake. Any time past 30 min, such as 2:31 until 2:59 is said: "Son las tres menos veinte y nueve (for 2:31) thanks!

  • @mr158854

From my understanding, you don't HAVE to say it like that, it's just another way people say it. People could still say: Son las dos cincuenta y cinco. Whether they do or not could simply depend on the person.

  • My pants are giving me a rash.

  • This has helped me more than my actual lesson in my spanish class!!

  • I am spanish and i can say that this guy is very good speakin spanish.Teach very well

  • there is a mistake here i guess. i don't know if this the right way on saying time. because in our spanish class, our professor said that of it's 2:45 it will be son las tres menos veinte. we're learning castillan spanish, i don't know if other hispanic regions have the same orientation with time but this is spanish (spain) way of saying time.

  • @ichigo0000000000000

you don't HAVE to say it that way. And watch part 2.

  • @ichigo0000000000000 your teacher makes it really complicated...good luck ..im learning so much from this guy, he's amazing !!

  • @ichigo0000000000000 In Spain it's strange to know people who says ''las tres y cuarenta'', we usually use ''Las cuatro menos veinte'' as you say. But if you say ''Las tres y cuarenta'' , it's not wrong, that's Ok, but we don't use it, it's a bit strange, but it's perfectly right ^^

  • My spanish teacher is teaching us if its over 30 minutes we subtract that number from 60 for example. 6:10 "son las siete menos cincuentaa"

  • @leuartrocks1 Mmh... actually, that's incorrect. We use this expresion AFTER Half-past hours, for example: ''6:50 - Las siete menos diez'' ''14:35 - Las tres menos veinticinco'' (not veinte y cinco, that's incorrect, it only works with thirty and above, for twenty numbers it is sayed ''veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés, veinticuatro...'' etc. An example with thirty: ''treinta y uno, treinta y dos, treinta y tres...'' and the same with the following numbers until 100) (6:10 - Las seis y diez ^^)

  • Thanks for doing this! I didnt understand the clock in school and now a test is coming up so I have to learn, you helped me so much, thanks! Keep doing that! :)

  • Would you be able to say "Es el medianoche y trienta." for 12:30 am or no?

  • @AttishaProductionz

I don't believe so... just 12:00 sharp would be "es la medianoche" or "es el mediodía"

  • @AttishaProductionz just say son las doce y media

  • @AttishaProductionz No, we don't say that XD, but in Spain (I don't know if in other countries you can do it) you can say for 12:30 ''Es medianoche'' , because we don't use it as an exaclty ''twelve o'clock'', we use ''medianoche'' or ''mediodia'' for the period of time between twelve o'clock and one o'clock (and in ''mediodia'' until two o'clock, more or less) Hope I'd helped you ^^

  • Thanks this is very helpful couldn't quite catch in class :) gracias!

  • oh my god! Tengo una pregunta...Es "Es LA una" y "son LAS dos, etc.", porque "hora" es femenino? gracias por ayudarme!

  • @TheFUCK4u

Creo que es algo por el estilo.

  • Oh yes this helped! THANK YOU! -And I had to put it in here, thanks for doing Military time! ;)

  • Thanks. You helped a lot :)

  • I LOVE YOU.

if it wasnt for you, i'd be screwed.. you are an angel.. thank you soooo much!!

i was on vacation when we learned about telling time and my teacher just gave me vocab to read over & i was soooo confused and then i watched your vids and i feel SO good :) you helped soooo much! you dont understand how grateful i am :D

  • I can speak Spanish now :D. I mean... Yo puedo hablar español ahora Woo Hoo!

  • in school we learned that it is "Son las cinco menos treinta y cinco" not "son las cuarto y treinta y cinco". and our teacher is spanish..

    maybe both are correct. hmm.

  • @kristineon

I love when people make a comment on a 'part 1' video about something I probably talk about on the next video. ;-)

  • @tontitofrito wopsie, didn't see that it was a part 2. :b sorry, hehe..

love your videos btw, forgot a lot of what I learned in 8th grade so this helped a lot :)

  • so that is the parent of the filipino time., hahahaha we filipinos also engage on that kind of time.,

  • I learned in my Spanish class that once it goes more than thirty minutes past the hour, you would have to subtract the remaining minutes from the next hour. For example, instead of saying, "Es la una y cuarenta y cinco," for 1:45 we'd say, "Son las dos menos cuarto."

  • press 9 for piss

  • Just curious, the majority of textbooks use the "y" and "menos" method. For example, it is not "son las cinco y trienta y cinco" it is "son las sies menos veinta y cinco" or something of the sorts. Everything after 30 is supposedly "menos" rather than "y". Any thoughts on this?

  • thank u sooooooooooooo much u,re great

  • doesn't manaña mean tomorrow, so why it mean in the mourning here?

  • @anthonytravers100

    (el) mañana = tomorrow...

by itself... mañana usually means tomorrow...

    ex:

    hasta mañana. (See you tomorrow)

Mañana lo hago (Tomorrow, I [will] do it)

    la mañana = the morning

Por la mañana / En la mañana = In the morning

    De la mañana (AM)

  • i love these lessons but when the picture of the clock show up, i think u r wrong about the time.

  • también se puede decir ¿qué horas son?

  • Very nice video. I'm going over basics of spanish again for my exams to make sure I remember everything correctly. So far so good :)

On a side note, I think you should've mentioned in your video that you can also say, instead of son las ocho y cincuenta for example, son las nueve menos diez.

  • @BlueSharkBoy434 Oh, haha. Nevermind. I really should've watched the next video before I posted that comment :) My bad

  • These Que hora es? Videos have been soooo helpful for mis grados 3, 4 y 5!!!

I'm a Spanish teacher in Tanzania and I've linked all 3 of these time telling videos on our blogs on wordpress; they are latamaritabonita and istlanguages - both in front of the wordpress address. You should read some of my 3rd grader comments there - they are too cute and very complimentaryI Keep up the good work!! Gracias, Sra. Tamara

  • I just love your videos...my students do too! Thank you so much!

  • köszönöm szépen!

  • In english when it's for example 4.15

we can say the numbers four fifteen if someone asks what the time is.

Could you do the same in spanish?

    Que horas es?

    Quatre Quince

    i guess not, just wondering

  • thanks for vids.

  • The latin sounds like spanish. Have you heard the word "currículum"?

  • My spanish teacher says that in spanish, when the minutes mast 30, you go one hour ahead, and subtract whatever minutes you have by 60. Like this

6:40 would be son las siete menos veinte

  • Comment removed

  • My Spanish Class really enjoys your lessons!!! This is really good. Thanks for doing this.

  • thanks this helped me

  • realmente eres el mejor. Gracias por los vídeos y las enseñanzas. Me gusta español ahora más.

  • Saludos!

Muchas felicidades.

  • Dude you can't spell right (in spanish) veinte y dos WRONG it is veitidos

  • Yeah. But it's actually 'veintidós' so I guess we're even. ;-)

  • @tontitofrito When I was taking Spanish classes in college, I was taught that 'veinte y dos' is actually correct, but when speaking, native speakers pronounce it 'veintidos'. It's kinda like how we use contractions in English.

  • @tontitofrito you can use veinte y dos can't you? that's what it says in my book.

  • @HawktorisAwesome u can spell it both ways,,, i think putting the "y" in between is easier to remember

  • @MegaGeminiBaby But it is the law( well in spanish)

  • @HawktorisAwesome it can be either. depends on where you come from and what you're taught.

  • thanks so much for this it helped me out a ton!!! :) I really understand it now!!

  • 4:24 he said Spanglish! LOL Great video, it really helped me out. :D

  • @PianoScience HE DID! thats hilarius! I'm actually watching this in spanish class, so, This is Awesome. LOL, ;D

Saludos Chicos tontitos, bye

  • I want to learn the language. I have many videos and books, but you are most far most the most informative and you explain things well. You made the language easy and refreshing to learn. Thanks !

  • thank you snr jordan .you are the best teacher!! am proud of you

  • This is the future Roseta Stone

  • i loved doing this vid it was fun!!i know learning fun it's crazy^_^

  • we played this in spanish class today :)

  • You're an awesome teacher, tontito frito! :)

  • doesn't your username mean "little silly bean" ?

  • umm... it's gibberish really. for some reason, it wouldn't let me use 'srjordan' as a username or 'senorjordan' so:

'tontito frito' => little fried silly/dumb one

"tonto" is much stronger in Spanish than English though. You wouldn't use any word for 'stupid' quite like we throw them around in English.

  • @tontitofrito u r the best spanish teacher, u help me a lot with span 101 at uni

    from new zealand.

    cheers

  • Not really, say tonto it's useless as an insult why? it's quite simple it's just the first insult a child learns but in fact if someone says your are "tonto" it's considers an opinion not an insult, and sometimes it doesn't mean directly your are silly.

But if someone wants to insult you saying your silly or stuff like that maybe he will say : gilipollas, tontopollas, atontao, corto, imbecil, subnormal, etc...

  • Interesting.

The way it's been explained to me by my friends, I shouldn't use any word referring to someone's intellect in Spanish (or be careful in doing so) because words such as 'tonto, menso, imbécil, estúpido, cretino," etc are a lot stronger in meaning in Spanish than in English.

For children things like that are more acceptable than for adults as children are still learning, while adults should understand social and linguistic norms.

  • my crazy spanish teacher watches you. Lol. She loves ur vids. Good teaching tyvm

  • Your the best

  • When telling time past the half hour, why dont you use "menos"? IE: Son las seis menos cuarto. This is the more proper way of telling time that I teach my students.

  • in spain we say menos too xd

  • This was reaaaaally helpful, THANK YOU!

  • when you say "En las una", we always have to say "un punto" at the end. That means o'clock. But the way you say it is also right as well.

  • Interesting. I've heard 'en punto' for "on the dot" or "sharp" with time, but it's not necessary.

  • Examples:

    Es la una (en punto).

    Son las 2 (y) 15.

"En punto-o'clock" and "Y-and" are opcional.

  • same w/ us

  • I love your lessons :) I'm not English speaker I have been studying Spanish for one month only. It's my 4th foreign language. I find it quite simple (and similar to French). I do my revisions with your videos which are very very helpful to cach basics. :)

  • why is it una not uno?

  • ¿Qué hora es? La hora es una. One is the only number that can change for gender agreement. One is the loneliest number...

  • I already answered this in a previous comment.

  • "The Time" (English), "La Hora" (Spanish).

In English the word "the" is used indistinctly for singular, plural, masculine or feminine. But, in Spanish this isn't like that.

"La" is singular and feminine, so, the time must be a saying in "feminine".

"La Una" (la) singular and feminine, (Una) singular and feminine). It's correct.

"La Uno" (La) Singular and feminine, (Uno) Singular and masculine. It's Incorrect.

Sorry for my bad english. <_<

  • this helped me sooooo much thanks

  • Tontitofrito: I'm a Spanish native speaker and everything is perfectly explained, congratulations. I'd like to remind you, you can also skip the "y" in e.g. "son las 2 (y) 30. Any doubts, please ask me and i'll help you.

  • what about 6:04?

  • 6:04 <- Son las seis y cuatro.

If it was 6:15 then it would be: Son las seis cuatro (without the "y")

  • Why is "es la una y cuarenta y cinco" have one as una not uno?

  • I'll admit this is just my theory... but it makes sense? ;-)

The word for hour/time in Spanish is feminine "la hora"

    la una (the one [hour])

    las dos (the two [hours])

    las tres (the three [hours])

    etcetera....

  • no man. he got vids for spanish 2. imma watch those next year. to bad my spanish teacher next year already hates me cuz i was bein "disrespectful" to her. miss brixner yelled at me today lol

  • pe eme or a eme, that's just crazy talk so don't do it

heh heh beautiful! I luv him

  • Toni,

You are one of the best online teachers I have come across. Those instant graphics in the background makes it the more effective teaching tools.

    Two comments.

    1. Please have the microphone closer to your mouth, so we can hear the pronounciation with little distortion.

    2. You also wish to let viewrs know that, you are unisg the Latin version of Spanish, where they pronouce "V" as "V. in Spain this letter is prounouced like "B".

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

    Levi

  • i thought manana was used for 'tomorrow'.

  • 'el mañana' or 'mañana' by itself is used for 'tomorrow'

    la mañana = the morning

  • Also "Faltan 5 para las 10".

  • We wouldn't use "tu" with "da" because "da" is the formal conjugation of the verb "dar" and "tu' is informal, in any case we would use "su hora" instead of "tu hora")

¿Me da su hora, por favor? (formal)

    ¿Me das tu hora? (informal)

To be honest, I've never heard the use of the possessive "tu"/"su" in asking for the time and I'm a native Spanish speaker and teacher.

    Use this instead:

"¿Me puedes dar la hora, por favor" (informal)

"¿Me puede dar la hora, por favor?" (formal)

  • You can also use the verb "decir" instead of "dar".

  • Thanks for clarifying his comments. From your screen name, my guess is you're Puerto Rican.

'Boricua como el cuatro' ¿verdad? ;-)

  • jeje! Si soy Puertorriqueña. :o)

Gracias por tu vídeo. Uso muchos de estos vídeos en mis clases de español.

  • hey i learned this, is ur class!

    Go Sr Jordan!

  • So is the old way wrong?

in my Spanish 1 class if it was 2:45 pm

we would say "Son las tres menos quince de la noche."

    Which one is right?

  • Well, we use "noche" usually after 6pm (but in some countries it varies)

Just say "son las 3 menos 15 pm."

Or "son las 2 y cuarenta y cinco"... either way is correct.

  • I'm a 8th grader and I'm learning times in spanish, and in my school when it says 4:35 we say Son las cinco menos veinte y cinco.

In ur video y does it say 4:35 as in Son las cuatro y trienta y cinco?

  • Thanks for your question. There are different ways of saying the same thing. Watch part 2 of this video series.

  • In reference to terrycheersome's comment...

The most common way after 30 minutes is on telling time part 3.

Everyone I know says it as follows:

3:55 - Son cinco para las cuatro

(Roughly translated: It is five minutes until four)

  • My Spanish instructor told me that digital time is most commonly heard these days.

    Ex. 9:55

Old way: son las diez menos cinco

    New way: nueve, cincuenta cinco
