In the alternative method, there's no need to calculate the trapezium area at all. One simply subtracts the terms of the curve function from those of the line function (which gives -x^2 -3x + 4) and then calculates the definite integral of this between the same x values used in the method shown (-4 and 1). Job done.

At about 7.00. How does the '-' (minus sign) after the 45 change the brackets being taken away from eachother, to being added to eachother?

Because its minus the whole thing the thing is normally ( something ) - ( something else )
since theres a minus it becomes - something - - something else
which is - something + something
