the funny thing about the first crash, i say that jokingly as its NOT funny, the person you see extinguishing the fire is the driver of the yellow car who pulled over, basically, the safety guys didn't do a whole lot in the way of helping him for about the first 2 minutes...which was enough to permanately fuck him up...

Few times in my life of watching racing have I ever heard or seen a wreck as brutal as the one in the opening of this video that wasn't fatal. The impact of the Porsche into the wall makes me twitch, the collision and subsequent fire that follows makes me wince as though I was actually there. Perfect Music for this though.

The first crash is Tetsuya Ota's crash at Fuji Speedway in 1998. In my opinion Shinichi Yamaji, the driver of the RX7 that stopped to help Tetsuya, deserves a medal. After seeing the crash, he pulls he car over @ 0:42 you can see him running over to a fire point to get a extinguisher, returns and puts the fire out then helps get Tetsuya out of the car. The marshalls were less than helpful in so many ways. If it wasn't for Shinichi Yamaji it would have been a fatal crash

@eggfromsywell Medal, indeed!!! Thank you for the rundown of what actually happened. Ive seen this crash many times and had no clue how it ended up. I am a racer and see fire as the #1 threat in racing. My dad (a driver) has pulled two guys from burning cars at my local race track as the 'rescue' workers just stood and watched or scrambled like idiots with no clue. It sucks what some of these people fail at doing when duty calls. Did Ota ever race again?

When the fire marshal layed him down onto the floor his visor melted onto his face and from injuries from the impact I think he was unable to move his right arm, right shoulder and fingers properly. He ended up suing the race organisers for "failure to implement proper safety measures"

"Motorsport is Dangerous" is the sign you'll read as you enter any UK race circuit, but the court case was based on the fact that "the race organisers had failed to take sufficient precautionary measures, such as having fire engines on standby as is required to extinguish fires and rescue drivers in 30 seconds or less" and their race marshals were poorly trained.
