I own an 83 c10 with the same setup besides the 4.10 gears and the tbi mine has a carb. And I was very happy with the lunati cam however I do run 1.6 ratio rocker arms And I to am 16 years old.
i have a 390 (i know its a ford) but i was wondering what you think of the cams lift and duration and such? i was gonna get the BMII with the 300/300 duration. woudld it lope more??? im 16 and kinda learning the ins and out of this. the truck would be used for cruising the street (not really a DD) and racing (drag)
@deanschool I'm not sure of the exact cam you are talking about but if its 300 degrees of duration it should lope like my truck. Lobe separation angle and intake/exhaust overlap have a lot to do with lope as well. The less lobe separation and more overlap the lopier it will be, but this also affects performance. I am by no means an expert but I was pleased with Lunati products I'm sure one of their staff would be able to help you choose the most appropriate camshaft to accomplish your goals.
wow I got that same engine and rear end in my caprice that cam was it oo lopey for the vacuum and you said the pressure made it lean you ever fix it? How?
@scuddigi It needed a bigger throttle body (TBI) if it was carbed it would have been just a matter of throwing a bigger carb on it. TBI throttle bodies aren't cheap and the biggest I ever could find was made by Holley and was 670cfm. I never bought it though, all I did was throw an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on it and crank it up to 18psi which helped but it still leaned out above 4500-5000RPM. Plus the computer tuning is a pain.
@krazykraka777 you can get a throttle body for a big block from a salvage yard. My brother did this and he also added a 1 inch spacer. He runs an Isky 280 Mega cam and the truck really gets with the program.
@kenzo5716 Yeah at the time I couldn't find one at a reasonable price (I was 17). I did have a 1" spacer on mine though. I would probably have a bigger throttle body on it by now but I sold it several years ago.
@YoungerPrice The smog pump was about midline on the motor and to the left on this truck. There should be a sticker somewhere under the hood with a diagram though.
That truck had the hose for the air pump that went right in to the stock air intake right???? if sooo where did you mount it on the after market air intake????
@puppy2334 Which hose exactly are you talking about? I deleted the smog pump so I didn't have to deal with any of that stuff and the intake was made for TBI engines so everything else pretty much fit just like stock.
@JetForceF22 The only time you would need to change rockers is getting rid of stamp ed steel for high spring pressure or go to roller rockers for horsepower increases.
You're going to need to change the springs to match the cam.
I had to buy an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Stock the TBI 350's were around 13-14psi fuel pressure I had to turn it up to around 18psi and it was still lean. In hindsight I wouldn't build a TBI like that. If possible just buy an older truck with a carb. Much easier because you don't have to deal with computer tuning.
Yeah there were several Bracketmaster cams for SBC I just went with the small one because I hauled a trailer and the RPM range was 1500-5200 which worked well with my heads and intake as far as torque curve is concerned. Stills sounds mean in my opinion.
Sorry, I meant to reply and I accidentally removed your post. Yeah, I wrote the description when I was like 15 and wasn't that bright. The heads were casting 10110810 '93-up swirl ports.
I have 3:16 gears and the 4L80-e tranny. My truck redlined at 5200-5300, it didnt have no more to offer. But also to mention just because I did that speed doesn't mean the trucks fast it took it awhile to get up there
The gears and trans explain it. You have overdrive and a highway gear set. I had a 3spd auto with 3rd gear ratio of 1:1 and 4.10 gears. Yeah my truck would get up to top speed pretty quick it just ran out of gear.
I added the intake along with several other parts and I did notice a significant power gain but who's to say how much was the intake? Sorry I can't be more help
For anyone wanting to use a TBI with a sbc setup like this, you need to go to a salvage yard or ebay and get one for a 454. it will bolt right on and has much more flow. hope this helps out.
It did yes, i rebuilt the engine with a smaller cam then sold the truck. I don't have the part number but you can find it in summit or jegs or on their websites. Just look for Lunati Bracket Master II for small block chevy. Its the one with 284 deg of advertised duration (218 @ .050) and .458 lift. It is a single pattern cam.
The Small Blocks are offered in the Short Block 350 and on the more recent models Truck Long Block 350, Does a standard cam fit both a short and long block or is there no difference in cam length?
Short block and long block is just a term gearheads use to describe if it is a complete engine or just a block and rotating assembly. They are the same size.
Just be sure the engine you are using it in wasn't originally equipped with a roller cam or you will have to find a retro-fit kit to make the cam work as it is not a roller but a flat tappet cam.
Well my truck is a 95 350 TBI. As far as I know the truck does not come factory equipped with a roller cam, to my knowledge GM started doing that with the vortech engines, but then again I can be wrong.
In the Chevy Trucks the engines used a flat tappet cam until 96. However the 87-95 trucks do come with the provisions for a roller cam, they just don't have one.
Thats a throttle body?? Did you have to change the lifters and all that with the cam? I also have a question about the rear end gears too if you would mind answering them for me, thanks for your time.
yes its a throttle body i wouldn't recommend using it if possible it really limits potential and yes new lifters should always be used when you change a cam. ask away about the gears
Okay thanks for that- I have a 95 Chevy K1500 4x4, I want to put 4.10's instead of 3.73's, the truck maxes at 100, (even with the OD), my tranny is the 4L60E, Now if I put 4.10's in will it max at 80 or 85, whatever the 3rd speed ratio ends at, or will the OD shift to go to 100 till the rev kill?(which is at 100) This has been my question and main reason why I have not switched over to the 4.10's yet. Thanks for your help by the way
don't remember the part number for the cam but you can find it in summit racing or jegs. and honestly i didn't do anything with the cpu it just worked the first time i cranked it
When you first started to back away from the truck, that cam made it sound like galloping horses. Nice work on the truck. I love the sound. I wanna get a Lunati cam for my 01 Silverado, just don't know which one to get.
I did when I had it. It stopped fine, took some pressure on the pedal though. It's worth the power and it will still stop as good as stock just take more muscle.
i hav a same exact truck but i dont know if mines a custon deluxe or a silverado.i got same exact gauges and motor.what kind of valve covers u got on it?
i bought an 87 last year with a 305 and i'm pulling my 350 out of my monte for in it,it pushes around 400 hp the way i have it set up but i'm keeping my throttle body and all the emissions on the truck,it only has 63000 miles on it but the 305 is a pile of junk metal
Yeah, I noticed the TB tucked way up under there after I posted that message. Didn't see any other sensors, so at first glance it looked like he took all the TB stuff out.
about the exhaust...I'm running 3" pipes with Flowtech Afterburner mufflers and Hooker long tubes up front on my 84 Silverado...I love the sound, very deep. I'm running a 292H Comp cam in mine.
This may be the cam I'll go with when I build my stroker
