English word slave came from….Slav=Slavic people most of the time they where the victims in European history, In every part of the Earth there is slavery and will never go away all we can do is to improve there living standard and forbid the biting and killing slaves and give them same food and dress that you have
@Snutih, The Arab or Muslim Middleman is the slave trade of africans to America were the worst! There is still much slavery in the Arab world today, places like Saudi Arabia still have it eventhough they would tell you they dont. Good and excellent point.
Absolutely there is no any legal to respect in this earth. Business and materialist is managing this world, and they are selling people on the streets, with sex Slavery, Human spare parts, force employees, employes kids to the warfare, and many more, is what we have seen on the earth on this 21 century.
China also laughs at us saying anything about slavery when we have the highest incarceration rate in the West. We are putting many people in jail and jails actually making a profit on this, so we are not as clean as we would like to think we are. So we need to clean our own house too, ..i don't believe we are as bad as many of these other countries, but we can also get better.
This whole slavery business is all about money, and much of this money corrupts many systems. A certain level corruption will exist and many ruthless and rapacious businessman or woman will profit from this evil practice. What type of body can stop this practive everywhere? A sad and terrible problem but unfortunately it will continue until each individual country goes after this with the same zeal.
american prisons also use free labour hence why the prison lobby is the largest in congress. America should be given credit for it positive roles but, clearly it isn't enough. Modern slavery is a huge topic that needs a lot of media attention. thank you Al Jazeera for rekindling this discussion.

I wonder if he means the Ottoman Empire by the most country 300 years ago - because Constantinople slave markets closed much later in the 19th century than most European empires, under British pressure

So dont no one white, black or whatever try to tell me it wasnt that bad it was and still a systematic evil that damaged us for generations and future generations to come
Ofcourse Africans enslaved there own ppl but it was America that established the Jim Crow laws, started the KKK, committed 100+ years of Black genocide and raped our women so go head and continue bringing up the "African cheifs enslaving there own ppl" because from what I see they had a vacation compared to what Blacks in America went through
Al Jazeera won t mention slavery in Islam which made 25 million victims , left practically NO descendants and has been going on for 14 centuries - TO THIS DAY .
@Snutih Cool go watch Fox News and listen to your KKK Pat Robertson and John Hagee sermons. As an African American and a descendant of African slaves I know the lynchers of my forefathers and those who raped my people of their heritage and lives. Ahh the same folks who went to church on Sunday and praised Jesus but on Monday's shouted "im gon kill me a nigger"! You wonder why millions of African Americans left the religion of their slave masters for Islam? Fucking KKKracker!
No-one alive on earth is not distantly related to a slave. African chiefs enslaved their own people to the European and Arab slave traders. In fact, it was the British who were the first to challenge the slave trade starting with the purely anti-slavery West African Squadron, they then went on to challenge Arab slavers in East African. The British Empire put pressure on all governments around the world to abolish slavery. Unfortunately an unofficial slave trade still persists.
There once came a species from another universe here. They told some people or teached them ways to control others. Ofcourse themself was brainwashed too misled by these creatures from another universe. It failed. Then they designed an immage from humans to created others, clones. Till today we are their servents, slaves, sheep, cows and what not. But then long time ahead already some stood up and understand. Today were dumb again and we get on our knees. It's in our DNA or inner stellar being.
Today they are called "servants". What's the difference? There is one: The so-called "house niggers" were usually treated better than modern day "servants", because they were considered valuable property, and you always treat your own property better than foreign persons. "Field niggers" were also treated better than most of today's illegal Mexican field workers.
we should end slavery at all costs. i find it extremly hyprocritive of America's policy on this matter. while they purchase cheap products from China and at same time they dont critisice china for this. atleast Europe higlights on this.
@hoosierhiver I think he is referring to slavery in the "new world" ie. Americas. Of course everybody knows slavery started way before 300 years ago. When we think of slavery in the modern context we think of African slavery into the Americas which started approximately 300 years ago on a large scale. I hope that clears it up for you. Peace!
@hoosierhiver It seems as if he directly referring to the boom of "colonial" imperialism as opposed to slavery as something that has almost always existed as long as man has been around.
Legalizing, regulating, and asking every prostitute to be registered or licensed, makes it easier to reach out and help those who need help. There is no perfect solution unfortunately. Criminalizing it drives the whole industry underground, and it becomes far more dangerous.

Dylan said "everybody serves somebody" and that's servitude, hence, slavery. No matter how many debates occur, the strong will always, ALWAYS exploit, trick, kidnap and enslave the poor. The definition offered in the question "can the person walk away?" could be applied to everyone worldwide. I wish this reporter would stop making out that all slaves were treated badly. It's a known fact that slaves were also treated very well and were very happy with their roll for their masters. Considering that it was usually the rich that had slaves, this pretty much guaranteed food, warmth and a roof over your head with no responsibility. That's not to say abuse did not happen to them but reporting about slaves like this does only one thing and that make's you look like a bad reporter.
@slightlytwistedagain lol YOU ARE RETARDID! How about I make you my slave? I promise to treat you well bitch! There is NO SUCH THING AS "KIND SLAVERY" if you want to treat a slave well... FREE THEM AND PAY THEM TO WORK FOR YOU ASSHOLE! My I dont think I ever seen such a STUPID COMMENT!
@JUDALATION .Make them work for you: Tell them they're free! That you'll give them work for pretty paper you'll print yourself out of thin air, that food, shelter, clothing and transports (to go work) will be from now on their own responsability..That you'll SEIZE a third of their salaries from the get go and everywhere they'll turn around, you'll tax them on everything YOU sold them...Then, the loans! at high rates that you know they won't be able to repay or work for most of their lives. LOL
@JUDALATION I didn't notice your comment until now. Read my last comment and look into history of slavery throughout the ages, like thousands of years all over the world from the Romans to the Arab slave trade of the 19th century. You really need to study the way of life back then not just on slaves but also free men. Judging by your comment you could do with studying your stupidity because by the sound of ya, you sound like the generation brainwash by the media machine.
@slightlytwistedagain You really dont get it... The Romans forced slaves to fight to the death... The spartins raped little boys and cut their heads off... The Muslims raped slaves and beat them, And Almost all slaves were capured after being invaded, and the women were raped while the men were slaughtered, And no slave was free because if they resisted they could be killed or beaten. You are the one who does not get it! If you have proof slaves were treated well please show me when! You dumbass
@JUDALATION For fuck sake yet again for the third time I'm having to explain that I'm not saying slavery was all rosy. Why don't you look on Wikipeadia Slavery in ancient Rome and read the treatment section. This is why people like you are dip shits on subjects like this because you never look at the whole picture or check multiple sources. I hate it when people give their stupid stubborn one dimensional look on things because in a real human societies, things don't work in that fashion.
@slightlytwistedagain OHHH I see your point! So Cancer is Also not so bad...You get to loose weight when you take Chemo. Also Aids is also not so bad... You dont have to worry about saving for retirement... You are a retard... in the past workers were like Maids who were allowed to stay in the house of their masters.. But that is indentured servants who agreed to work to pay off a debt...They were still beaten and had no freedom. You dont understand that even a well "cared "slave STILL TERRIBLE!
@JUDALATION Stop taking things out of context with using diseases as a metaphor it was a different time and attitude back then with the way of life. In today's world there is the belief that every man should be a free man and rightly so. Life has gotten easier, we have more opportunities, systems to help us when we hit rock bottom. Back then life was very disposable, hard, you did what you did to survive, some people really benefited being in service to a master because it was harder being free
@slightlytwistedagain A few were treated well and in some locations the slave masters would even marry them. But they had to say yes, even when they wanted to say no, in order not to be sold or have their kids sold, after all they were still slaves. They did not get sick days, holidays or more than slightly better table scraps then the poorly treated slaves. If you think that slavery is such a kind thing, I am sure we can find a opening for you with a kind slave master and see if your views change.
@rosey312 Don't get me wrong I don't commend slavery but they were different times and attitudes back then. Being a free man didn't guarantee quality of life as it was harder back then to live, survive. Sick days and holidays are a new thing so even free men workers didn't get holidays, they even got the death penalty for being part of Unions. Having your children sold off was a fact of life then because it was more about survival than morals, plus it was perfectly fine in the eyes of the bible
@slightlytwistedagain actually the bible says" Make not a slave of your own" Leviticus 25:39 That is one of the reasons during roman times jews who were slavers were obligated to buy jews that were enslaved by others. And having your children sold was not about survival for anyone but the slave owner. Africans have very tight family relations. The bible also says that a man that kills his slave should be also be jailed. Deuteronomy 27:25. Christians and jews didn't follow that rule.
@slightlytwistedagain In africa and arabia slaves were allowed to become wives and the children were treated as family with the right to inherit property of the father. Infact if a man saw a slave that he loved and wanted to marry he could buy her, marry her or call her "umm walad " mother of the child, and there was not the same shunning that was in the US of that man. So African and Arab slavery was different in that respect. But a slave is still a slave by any other name.
@benoitrobert63, that's a pretty broad definition you're working with there. So are you technically a slave if you have a job that provides a wage to support a family and other living expenses? Seriously, way too broad of a definition that ranks on the intellectual scale of an Emo.
@testing88534 If you're born (and we are) with a (national) debt to repay, monies borrowed on your behalf by other entities than yourself, and fhat "JOB" 's salary is SEIZED to repay these debts... let alone the fact that what's left of it is to pay for shelter, food, and transportation so you can get to and from that "job"... and to top it off, you'll pay taxes on all of the above. Born with a debt to repay by working IS the definition of slavery, wether you have figures on a screen, or not.
