You have choices about when to till it in. The garlic is only planted after the buckwheat is done for the summer. I plant garlic in the fall, usually October after the full moon. If you till it in with mature seed formed, the idea is to grow it again. I planted this seed in May. When there is mature seed in July and I till it in, it will grow again and I may cut it down and till it in a second time, with or without mature seeds. You are right, we do not want it growing there with the garlic.

Yes buckwheat is a great smother/cover crop. I use it to prep my garlic beds as well. I'm also trying out red clover for this purpose.
