  • to all the bobby haters....FUCK YOU

  • thanks for posting.

  • all I know is that we're blessed to have these videos

  • @sirtom68 You didnt try the kool-aid did you?

  • ^.^

  • no jerry either....

  • I am from the Grateful Deads generation....all I can say is this is the worse massacre of a classic Marty Robbins tune that one could possibly imagine! Something is dreadfully wrong for sure !!!!!!

  • @sirtom68 Note to self, never take sirtom68's advice on music. Ever.

  • @sirtom68 I thought it was a great tribute to the classic to be honest. The way they start up the fast playing again for a measure or two after "Feleena goodbye" before ending is a nice addition. Bob also has a great voice for this, I've always thought the Dead did it good justice

  • @MrChrisVV Yea, the more I watch it, the more I like it. Im just a die hard marty guy, a purist I reckon you could call me :)

    PEACE

  • @sirtom68 fuck no u have no idea what you are talking about apparently your not that into the grateful dead

  • @nic886420 Crawl off my back dude, I aint here to piss anyone off, if you get offended like that you need to go sit on a bench at Terrapin Station and reconsider ya harsh comment man....chill

  • this guy is no Marty Robbins

  • @taflocks , You are right... he is however Bob Weir.

  • @taflocks yea hes better

  • Go Jerry go!!!!!!!!!

    R.I.P., big guy.

  • i love this so much. it'" like watching an old cowboy love story. ii love ace"s ballards. this & mexicali are my favorites. i always found it hard to get this song recorded, even back in the day. love it, great version

  • Jim Carrey was in training pants in 1972. And, btw, that fatso did at least one thing better than you'll ever do anything in your life. Heh heh.

Excellent quality video of the Dead covering Marty Robbins on the legendary Europe '72 tour.

  • Garcia must've been CRANKED to play all those silly licks he did on this tune! Get a shave fatso!

  • You BASS!!!!

  • That there singer sure is weird

  • Truckin gets a check, el paso gets the business i did not hang around to hear the end of this version, GOD bless

  • were all a bunch of idiots!! thats the good part!!!

  • i have every pair of underware in the jerry garsia underware colection

  • I really like Jerry's guitar tidbits in between Bob's verses.

  • Not to put The Grateful Dead down but this guy bears a striking resemblance to Jim Carrey

  • @1045Peter " this guy ", His name is Jerry Garcia, you fucking idiot, and no there is no resemblance to jim carrey

  • @datsikxdubstep lol you sound like a condescending asshole.... and yes the one singing looks like jim carey

  • @datsikxdubstep It is funny people to see people call another an idiot when they probably are a step beow them, although there is nothing below idiot on the Goddard scale. Of course, in the case of dead heads its hard to tell if it is the drugs. He was talking about Bob Weir, who kind of looks like Jim Carrey, but you should see him compared to golfer Paul Azinger! STRIKING

  • @datsikxdubstep actually I think he was referring to Bob Weir.

  • @1045Peter sure does

  • my love is stronger than my fear of death!

  • @cjonezz1 That's a beautiful post, brother. That's poetry.

  • you can tell jerry loves this sog

  • I am not a big Grateful Dead fan, but their cover is really good. Marty Robbins is the MAN.

  • half of these views are from me. long live

  • Marty Robbins was by far the best interpreter of this song...Nothing compares with him, God rest his soul!

  • I saw the Dead in Frankfurt, Germany in '72. This was the BEST concert I have ever been to. Long live the Dead and we'll never forget Jerry!!! RIP.

  • one thing the dead are the best at is using energy from the audience and responding to it with amazing jams.. the communication with the crowd is unreal and its hard for many to understand this but this is why they are my favorite band and why i smile every time i hear jerry's beautiful solo's

  • Viva El Paso and Rosa's Cantina! I still love to play there sometimes. My hometown.

  • of the hundred years i been alive 72 was the pinnacle for music

  • IM FROM El Paso!!!

  • @cjonezz1 i think this is like one of the greatest things i've ever heard someone say thank you for your insperation

  • shame there not more dead video out there, especially those shows prior to 1971 saw some really wild ones Roosevelt stadium in jersey fillmore east and a few more i really don't need the videos because it's playin' in my head daily

  • The Pig was great, agreed Whiskey. But I must say, the Dead lost a good part of their jamming agility when they went back to the 2 drummer format. Switches became more difficult and cumbersome. Nothing like the one drummer jamming of Dark Star, PITB, Weather Report Suite, Uncle John's Band jam in the 72-74 era, all of which were dropped after 1974.

  • I love Bob!!!!!

  • love this performance!

-GD fan from el paso tx

  • Keith made all the difference. The Dead were never the same after Keith and Donna left. The Dead were at their finest with one drummer, Keith, and Donna.

  • @mscheier Keith was great, Donna sucked, and Mickey & Bill work great together as drummers.

The Dead were at their finest when Pig was still alive!

  • Honorable Mention!

  • MARTY ROBBINS ROCKS. The Youtube video of Merle Haggard imitating Marty Robbins in front of Marty is a classic. RIP Marty, you will never be forgotten.

  • bobby's got the voice that makes the all the difference...

  • GOD BLESS THE DEAD

  • Goosebumps every time...

  • Keith and Jerry had great conversations...

  • @folly5girl - yeah, right. conversations like..."will you stick around if we fire your wife?" and "Keith, i'm jerry garcia, and you're taking more drugs than me"

  • @pbl1 I'm talkin' musical conversations Dear... I've been around long enough to know to stay out of band politics.

    It's the only way.

  • @pbl1

OK - that's pretty funny. And probably pretty close to the truth....

  • No way did i dis the Dead fans but dumb ass there took it that way he must not be able to read. I clearly stated i was looking for a better cover thats all then dumb ass has to take it personal. Show exactly his third grade mentality. I know i am being generous by stating third grade but i am in a good mood today.

  • @LesSmith45 - shame on you for letting someone push your buttons like that. just let it go. no style points for last word.

that being said, vocals are way down in this mix and there are better versions (vocally). BTW, Marty Robbins wasn't exactly known for his "booming voice".

  • i did not mean to offend the dead fans. I know they are a great bunch. But i was expecting a much better cover than this

  • wow such a powerful song. But this cover sounds like some pussy is singing it. What a shame i was hoping for a better cover. Should have left this one alone. You need a strong powerful voice for this song not a weak voice. Next please

  • @LesSmith45 kill yourself

  • @shitpiss2010 Your name says it all. That is what you must have for brains. No THAT IS WHAT YOU DO HAVE FOR BRAINS YOUR NOTHING BUT A DUMB FUCK. Now go babble to someone who gives a shit dumbass.

  • fender ftw

  • Can anyone tell me the exact date of this show?

  • @ShaggyNinja 4-17-72 Tivoli Hall in Copenhagen. It was a live broadcast for local TV.

  • A great saloon song! Only The Grateful Dead could make me want to hear a song for cowboys and give it life, real life.

  • This was the Dead at their peak.

  • @clarkewi

i kind of agree... i think they had two peaks in a way. One around this time, and then of course in 1977 they played some of their best shows.

  • Europe '72....one of the reasons I bought a 345......no regrets there, I guar-on-tee......

  • Comment removed

  • jerry the man

  • Bob Weir

  • @smilinsailorman not a fan of sax = not listen to ratdog more than one time

  • Who is the guy singing?

  • bob weir

  • @eatpineapples1 That is a young Bob Weird.. :)

  • listen to Jerry fuckin' get after it.....

    Amazing...

  • damn he looks hot

  • jerry disliked the doors, thought they were doin something the stones already did

  • Really interesting comment. I was never into the Doors. I heard Ian McLaughlin on NPR, formerly of the Faces, said he was never into the Grateful Dead. In fact, he turned down playing on a tour with them.

I love Marty Robbins' music, and this is an amazing cover. The youtube video of Merle Haggard imitating Marty is a classic.

Were the Dead into Buddy Holly? Who were some of their influences?

  • the dead were influenced by everyone even people they disliked, I'd say some of their biggest influences were the beatles and any and all blues that was before the dead's time

  • Yes, I heard that Dwight Yoakam was influenced by Hank Sr and Buddy Holly - and obviously Buck Owens. No doubt Dwight is an American classic.

  • @24pquiles The Dead had so many influences within their band - totally ecclectic. That's why their music is so interesting. Jerry was already a legendary folkie since like 1961. PigPen had his own blues radio show on KPFA for chrissakes - a huge record collection. Phil was a master at electronic music. Mickey is a fricken drum anthropologist. And Bear was their soundman! My God what a mix. Love it! Miss it.

  • even jesus grooves to the dead

  • trippin much! hell yes

  • Listen to Jerry just pluck away , amazing !

  • Yeah, Jerry's crispness amazes me with all those notes being laid down! I wish Bobby kept playing his Gibson hollow body, always loved the tone he got out of that thing...

  • so weird to watch them after seeing the who. GD look static compared to them. (again, no offense)

  • @BlueRednGrey

would it better for you if Jerry windmilled his arm like Pete Townshend?

  • @wireguy73 I would laugh my ass off. I love GD, nothing against them. Just different. Cover's almost always better than the original for them. I admire them for that. Great band, skills, everyhing, plus the fact that JG could play the banjo missing half his middle finger.

  • that'd be awesome

    and hilarious

  • thats bobbys job

  • 1972 was an amazing year. All the great bands/artists were in their prime: Rolling Stone, Grateful Dead, The Who, The Band, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Allman Brothers, etc.

  • The Doors? No, Jimmy was dead.

  • The 70's were amazing. I thought the Dead truly reached their prime around 1978 though. Everything I've heard from then is so energetic and they were always on.

  • the dead played in my town in 78

    yaaaaaaaay.

  • Besides Marty Robbins, the Dead did this song the best. Heard it many times over the decades. Love it. Thanx!

  • I love how Jerry (no offense) looks like a big hairy monster torso up... Like Hagrid from Harry Potter

  • no offense taken. Jerry invented the look of the big hairy monster, but he was cool enough to pull it off without being scary. I saw the grateful dead when I was 3 years old and the one thing i remember is how cool Jerry was

  • i wouldn't be surprised if this was a true story that happened to Bob Weir. lol

  • No, this song has nothing to do with Bob Weir. Marty Robbins wrote this song in 1959. Marty was awesome to watch in concert - had incredible stage presence. He died way too young.

  • The house band...

  • Sometimes I wish i was born some 40 years earlier so i could witness legendary things suck as the dead, BUT, im 16 unfortunatley... thanks for the upload

  • MARTY ROBBINS ROCKS. This is a good cover. I love watching how Marty can entertain an audience. Marty will never be forgotten. Check out the Youtube video of Merle Haggard imitating Marty right in front of Marty - awesome.

  • that is too classic!!!

  • same. i guess GD was more of an acquired taste for me though. you kind of have to grow into them...

  • Jerry's licks are godly in this version. As good as youll ever hear...Long live the Dead

  • Fantastic!!!

  • the grill cloths on those amps are really wild.

  • iv'e never seen anyone play as FAST as jerry.he plays so fast it's rediculous.GREAT BUT REDICULOUS

  • There's guys faster fo sure, but Jerry's accenting and phrasing were truly one-of-a-kind

  • @stashJ8 yeah, Hendrix had the technique, Jerry had the feeling.

  • @stashJ8 You are right on my friend. Besides, its not about speed... Grateful Dead is about the vibes and the music, its not supposed to be fast.

  • I used to have an audio version of this on bootleg and it was a bit quicker. Jerry WAILED thru the whole track. Dont even think he played a chord the whole time. Just 32nd and 64th notes the whole song. Ill probably never find it cuz it was definately within the short time he was doing coke. RIP jers

  • This definantly is one of their best covers. It really suits Jerry's style.

  • Totally suits his style.I always liked their slower versions of this tune...

  • this is a marty robbins song 1959

  • why is jerry so good?

  • one of my fave Dead covers.

agree that they are in their prime at this point in time, the early 70s.

  • Personally my favorite era of the band.

  • definitely agreed

  • amazing song, one of their best

  • i had no idea that there was video of this?! 72' was the Dead in their prime, great vid and song

  • gotta love this dead song...thanks.

  • man, they were all coked out on this tour....gotta love this one. probably my favorite bobbie tune, ride em' cowboy!

  • This is priceless, thank you

  • ty, reade =|;-D
