precisely, the minigun was introduced for the purpose of protection against fast moving attack/suicide boats...the idea being that it pumps so much lead into the target that it literally discintergrates it before it can get to the ship.

What is a purpose of 7.62 mm caliber on such big ship? Except maybe for defense against pirates who wants takeover the ship. (Close combat)
