This should not be political, this is a friendship thing, once the leaders in Pyongyang realize how human Americans are and that not all of them are imperialist fascist pigs like George Bush, they will listen to Americans because they are friends and things will improve as trust is gained.

It wouldn't have to be a visit to DPRK itself, it could be a meeting at a neutral site, similar to how Reagan met Gorbachev at Reykjavik. If such a summit was successful, then perhaps goodwill visits by the two leaders to each other's countries could be arranged. The US could prevent a propaganda coup by requiring that DPRK sign a peace treaty with ROK (they are technically still at war) in order to move forward.

@perfecttrunks2000 If Kim Jong il is as serious about peace as he claims, he would do it, if not then it would show deception on Jong-ils part and be a political victory for the US.

Signing a peace treaty would be mostly a symbolic gesture by the DPRK, but a significant one that could pave the way to peace and even the eventual withdrawal of US troops from the ROK (which the ROK desires.)

@Rereversed yet Russia is the only country in the world that has managed to undergo a constitution that offers protections to all citizens anywhere in the world against foreign contries, whenever such doen't clash with criminal acts. So a journalist would have been rescued with battleships sent from vladivostok and ICBM's targeted from Siberia :p
