Thanx for the tips man. I've now used Ultimate Boot and formatted my VAIO. Installing LUBUNTU as I type this comment

Dang me! It works! I'm now looking at Win XP on an ancient 8 yr old VAIO that I thot I'd never get sorted. Hopefully I can install Ubuntu on it.

you can reset your BOIS password ...google it
all i can tell you is it has to do with wires channging
