  • What a piece of crap!!

  • I wouldn't be moving that lever around so much.

  • I don't mind admitting that, as a teenager back then I secretly wanted an SX/4.

  • Nice gloves

  • I LOVE AMC

  • Wonder what that blonde chick at 0:50 was thinking when she got herself in the Amc sx/4. One has to assume that she was looking for a way to despise her boyfiend....

  • funny thing is an eagle would go over great nowadays with todays crossover-happy car buyers

  • Register and discuss about this car in V6wall com ;)

  • The AMC Eagles were awesome cars. I currently have a 1985 AMC Eagle Sedan.

  • It's sad the Eagle was discontinued, those were one of the best cars ever made by AMC.

  • Good Job EK ! Keep the Eagle stuff coming.

  • This car was 25 years ahead of its time.

  • i dont know why Mer. droped the very good 4.0L 6????

  • Such a shame AMC went under. They needed to get rid of that money pit Kenosha plant! Then trying to stay afloat by selling those awful Renault junkers didn't help. The Eagle was a good car, very ahead of its time. A lot of their cars were.

  • It's too bad Chrysler didn't continue selling the Eagle after acquiring AMC.

  • Normally, I hate tv commercials. But I do enjoy watching car commercials.

  • Subaru built their whole brand on this premise. It's a shame Chrysler never followed through after pillaging AMC.

  • Damn. What a great commercial. Especially for being over 20 years old!...

  • they looked so high off the ground

  • Such a good idea. Such a good concept. Such a cool car. Way under rated. Chrysler is going under as bad karma for buying/killing AMC haha....

  • @TaTikiTahiti it's kinda funny how SUBURU uses AWD as it's selling point, yet AMC couldn't make a go of it??

  • I LOVE AMC CARS THEY ROCK

  • aha doesnt this commercial rock?...i just got an 84 eagle the other day and i love it!!

  • Way ahead of its time. The story of AMC, way ahead on ideas but always running into a brick wall.

  • It has the underpinnings of pretty much a jeep. Same motor, chrysler tranny (thats the weak part i'd say) and a dana rear axle (not sure on the front diff). I can say for a fact nearly, these things are rock solid. Mine drove after the rear spring punched through the floor from rust (!). Not to mention innovation, it is the FIRST american 4wd car. FIRST. But yeah, the body did have some build quality issues.

  • The funny thing is the unit-body platform the Eagle was built on was the same platform used in the XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee and finally phased out with the dmise of the WJ Grand Cherokee. The unit-body design the Eagle used dates to 1970 and was used well thru the 21st century...Talk about cool!

  • How was a uni body platform the same? just like same floor? or like same parts?

  • Basically the body was all that was different. If you have an Eage and a Jeep Cherokee side by side and crawl underneath both you will see what I'm talking about. AMC was definately ahead of their time!

  • LOL maybe Chrysler will have better luck changing their name to AMC when they come out of bankruptcy.

  • And, maybe they should change their names.

It would be a way to distract people from the fact that it will be partly owned by an Italian automaker.

  • I HAVE A 1981 AMC EAGLE

  • I had an SX-4 back in the late 80s. It's 4 wheel drive never worked and the front transmission/transfer case kept exploding. It was a good idea but poorly executed.

  • By no means was it poorly executed David! Just look at how great AMC's four wheel drive system works in all the videos on youtube. I have a 1981 SX/4 today that I use as my everyday car and it still has practically all original parts. Its four wheel drive works perfectly all the time. It even has original paint that is flawless. Sounds more like you were an Eagle abuser to me. AMC built some of the best cars of all time with the Eagle as no exception.

  • I currently have an 83' AMC Eagle wagon. It's in good shape, though the rust is starting underneith. Unstoppable when in 4-wheel drive. It's a great car, though I liked my 80' Eagle wagon better. Virtually no options except automatic and rear wiper/washer/defroster. Had full-time 4-wheel drive too. No select-drive. Delivered mail with it. Unfortunately it was a magnet for bad drivers and was totaled twice. Now it sits in a field serving as a parts car for my current Eagle. Oh well...

  • There was one of these Wagons for sale near me for cheap and low miles and I bought a minivan instead. I'll probably never get over that decision, the only advantage the van has is more passenger and cargo space.

  • Talk about a car ahead of its time! This was a "crossover" when we still didn't have a word for SUVs!

  • I own an 85 Wagon and I gotta say it's one of the best cars I've ever driven, wouldn't rade it for anything.

  • I own the exact wagon in the video.Great car!! My mechanic used to work for AMC. He knows these cars inside and out.Ive got 60 k original miles.

  • cool video

it would be great in Todays maket being slightly modernized

  • that is the best idea (too bad they sunk)

  • Its too bad AMC isnt around anymore been replaced by Jap brands people are so retarded

  • AMC was actually replaced/ bought out by Renault of France and then Chrysler, not by the Japs.

  • I just bought a 87 4 door limited for 800 bucks. I found it at a car lot in the middle of no where. This car is a lot of fun and the inside is really nice and pretty stylish. Leather seats wood grain dash. Anyways my wife isnt too thrilled, but she doesnt have to drive it its my toy. She can stick to the MB

  • I had an SX/4. never loved a car so much, but they can be a real bitch to work on

  • Why does it look like it's raised and rolling on 20 inchers or something

  • cause it is...it has a factory lift...

  • but those wheels are 15" I believe

  • whitewalls tires maybe make it look bigger, but it still looks raised.

  • They were slightly raised at the factory. Probably to accomadate the 4WD system. Unlike today's "crossovers" AMC meant for it to have some off-road capability if not as much as the CJ

  • nice hair lol

  • ???

  • I knew a guy who had one of these; he said it was the best car he ever owned. These were ahead of their time; why doesn't the American car makers give all wheel drive or four wheel drive cars a chance, instead of just giving them to trucks and suvs?

  • 4WD on a passanger car is not usually needed and gets to be an expensive "toy" if it breaks and it also sucks more gas. Unless you live in a snowy area it is not worth it unless you do off-roading.

  • Very stylish, distinctive, American. Some day I`m gonna buy several of these and have them restored.

  • my friends Dad had an 82 AMC eagle wagon with the fake wood sides. After Chrysler took over AMC in '87 they continued to build these wagons under the new Eadle division.

  • :)

this car is so underrated only becuae it its ugly styling but one this is for sure is that it was waay ahead of its time!!!!

  • ....hey, AMC had the first "cross-overs" ...I dig these ads...thanks for posting this, so cool.

  • Chick magnet

  • They developed a problem about every 2 weeks. It was like having a five year old kid with 4 wheels. I do like the view at 0:20, though! LOL

  • hard to beleive its a hornet/gremlin under there

  • i think this is where dodge gets its design from this car for the dodge magnum just look at the shape of this car.............

  • i had 2 of them mechanics refused to work on them!!!

  • why?

  • Because since they used a mix of mopar and ford design parts, they were essentially a bastard mix. Mine seemed to develop mysterious problems that the ordinary mechanics were unable to diagnose. There would be a problem, they would try everything, and it still wouldn't work, leaving me angry and them looking like idiots.

  • AMC= All Makes Combined !!!

really not a bad thing. Saved AMC money by not having to redesign everything from scratch. something the "big 3" need to do more of.

sounds like you need a new mechanic, mopar transmission, ford ignition, GM steering. dunno whats so hard to fix

  • Rodger that. I had a nice SX4 too. When running right they were unstoppable. When not...

  • All automakers are doing this now. Get a jeep mechanic to look at it.

  • I don't know about you but I'd refuse to let a mechanic touch my car if he was too retarded to fix a car as basic & straightforward as an old AMC.

  • Thats just sad....

this 1980-something, METAL, 4 wheel drive, 6 cylinder, carbureted station wagon gets 32 miles per gallon and what does a 2008 plastic 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder hatchback from basically any manufacturer get? 28-33 miles per gallon.

    pathetic.

  • they never got 32 mpg

    great amc engines though

    the sixes

  • You may be on to something.

  • That's so cool... My Great Aunt had a 1987 Concord. Beige. My cousin totalled it, but I still have the lighter attachment, nameplate, and a set of original AMC keys.

  • I'm sorry to hear that your Aunts Concord was totaled. Hope your cousin was O.K.! Though the Concord couldn't have been newer than an 83', that was the last year for it. Now the Eagle line ran until December 14, 1987. That I believe was the last day of production for AMC.

  • way ahead of its time....

  • Does anyone know as to when AMC covered the Hornet to the American Eagle series? Was it the early 80s?

  • I remember my Aunt and Uncle had one of the wagons. In Chicago that thing would go through snow like nothing. Pretty cool vid, brings back some memories.

  • i think the eagle vision was the best lookin out of the intrepid and concord + it had autostick

  • I worked at an AMC Jeep Renault dealership in the early 80s...quality control was an issue with these vehicles, but the basic underpinnings were pretty sturdy. Our biggest business came from selling the big old Grand Cherokees....couldn't keep 'em in stock! The only real turds in the lineup were the Compact Cherokees with the chevy 2.8 liter v6 powerplant...a short lived option. The i6 was much more reliable and made more torque.

  • Subaru Outback now interprets...

  • Interesting cars, too bad AMC did not survive their partnership with Renault.

  • Never forget that AMC made the first timed run for a vehicle in BAJA in 1967.

  • Not just your plain ordianary vehicle.

  • They were ahead of their time. With better engines and ads maybe AMC could have made it.

  • The 258 they had was a great engine.

  • The AMC six keeped mopar a float in the Jeep until 06....Don`t forget they destroyed all the amc tooling when they took over!!

  • that's right-and as a 242 it's widely regarded as the best engine Jeep ever used

but the 258 wasn't as good-the carb used to starve when it was slanted and it had very little power relative to the 242 and was harder to start from cold

the fuel injection in the 242 transformed it into a legend

but, yeah, I do agree with you

  • 232 cid

    sorry :)

  • I have a 1983 AMC Eagle wagon. It's a great car. However my 80' AMC Eagle wagon was even better. It had full time four wheel drive. I also have a 1979 AMC Concord. Got me From Butler, PA to Vegas and back in less than a week 2 years ago and it ran Flawlessly!! Very reliable!

  • Nice!

  • My Aunt had a Concord!!! A beige one. Still have the lighter, nameplate, and keys. I think it was a D/L

  • I remeber the commerical for the wagon when i was a kid. Oh the eagle made a buzz sound my mom owned one!!

  • Did the AMC Eagle wagon and SX/4 make a chime sound or a buzz sound?

  • What do you mean?

  • Mine buzzes if you leave the key in it

  • Oh, yeah, they do that, but on my 83 you can barely hear it, on my Kammback it is easy to hear

  • @Dragonrider3458 What year is yours?!!!

  • lol old commercias are funnyly lame but the car is awesome :p

  • These commercials had to be from 1981 to 1983. SX/4 was only produced from 1981 to 1983. Thus, these are really old. Thanks for posting these. I believe the wagon to be a 1981 or 1982 model and the SX/4 to be a 1983. Just a tidbit of info.

  • Says who? I have an 81 Kammback with 300,000 Miles!!!

  • Too bad you don't know what you are talking about. The Eagle is a Jeep with a car chassis, and nobody questions Jeeps reliability at all. I guess people forget that AMC owned Jeep and AM General. That's right, the Military's HUMVEE was designed and prototyped by AMC.

  • Most people who are car guys know AMC owned Jeep, but not as many know that they also owned AM General and started the Humvee.

The AMC Eagle was a product of Jeep and the Spirit and Concord.

  • That's right. Just look at the modern Hummer's grille. That's a Jeep grille right there. D-C sued GM over it, but i think they lost.

  • I love these cars! Hows this sound: a Eagle GT w/ a 383 stroker painted army camo 5spd full time all wheel!<---Future project car

  • Sounds good, besides the 383 (I'd go with an AMC 401 bored and stroked) But there was never an Eagle GT, there was the Sport, but that was an appearance package, but I'm guessing you'd be wanting the SX/4 model.

  • I didn't think there was an Eagle GT, but I guess thats what it'll become! I just want ppl to pull up beside me thinkin "WTF is that?" then I'm gone in a flash!

  • You could get the GT emblems from the Spirit GT

  • The 401 was almost as big as a bbc(4.75 vs 4.84 bore spacing) with the weight of a small block chevy. Their engines are WAY better if you build them up.

  • Yeah, that is one of the pros of AMC engines, I wish that guy that put the LS7 Chevey in the SX/4 didn't use that engine, he should've built up a 401. Every day, more and more performance AMC parts are coming about

  • Overall a great idea and good car that didnt meet overwhelming sales success.Way ahead of their time, they would sell like hotcakes today.Hummm....Chrysler owns Jeep...maybe they should resurrect a "Jeep Eagle"?

  • My dad had an '80 Concord DL; great little car which I thought looked pretty sharp back then.

  • lol what a joke, i love it when he switches

2 wheel drive then go wild with 4 wheel drive lol

  • Whoa. Look at the letter "A" in "American" on the logo on the second ad.

It's not aligned with the rest of the text! It's below the line. The logo in the first ad is fine.

I can't believe they didn't catch that before airing it. Amazingly sloppy. Makes you wonder if thier cars suffered from similiar lapses in quality control.

  • The A was extended down by accident,

  • The glitch on the AMC logo...Could it have been a "gremlin?"

    Couldn't resist...

The commercial I think was from the 1982 or 1983 model year, since Eagle TV commercials all but disappeared after the Renault Alliance appeared...

The AMC Buyer Protection Plan was devised to counter the perception that AMC's were poorly built. Year for year, AMC's were probably better built than comparable GM, Ford or Chrysler products...

  • I'm going to guess from the wheels, 82 to 83

  • What year is this commercial? Early 1980's?

  • It is too bad AMC was caught up with all that Renault garbage during the 1980s - but AMC likely would have folded even earlier had it not paired up with Renault - this is the same company that had a Jeep plant in Toledo where parts of the plant had dirt floors.

Why not call it the American Motors Eagle - why American Eagle as in the commercial? Or AMC Eagle?

  • NO THEY AREN'T!!! I have an 81 Kammback and an 83 Wagon, except for thepedal sticking sometimes, my 83 in dang near perfect

  • I have an 87 that I routinely abuse and it still runs like a top.

  • any resemblence to the "Knight Rider" TV show into in this commercial is purely coincidental.

  • they should have updated their front ends, they would have done better.

  • It may have used the same body as the Hornet or Concord but the power train was totally different. An awsome automobile ( but I do admit, I like Hornets and Concords too)

  • Its a glorified Concord/Hornet. However i will say this much. The 4.2 straight six was hard to kill.

  • I've got the exact model of the first commercial! Maybe not the same year - mine's a 1984 Limited wagon - but it's the same color and style and everything. Man I love my car :D

  • This ad is from 1981 or later, because 1980 Eagles only came with 4.2 liter sixes, automatic and (Quadratrac)full-time 4WD. Subaru's first American market AWD was in 1985, called an RX. Eagles were among the best snow cars ever built.

  • haha yes!

  • I thought the front ends were cool. Although I really liked the late 70's Hornet nose the best. Or even the 79 AMX. They were awesome cars. Ever heard of the AMC Cowboy?

  • yeah, the AMC Hornet Cowboy, like a smaller, better el camino

  • They should have made the cowboy on an Eagle platform for the 4X4.
