I fought the law and the law won, but I told them ya, I knew it was wrong, I did it anyway, glad those days are long gone, but if I could sing, this is what it would have been everytime those turn keys popped in lol
bobby fullers version is not the original either, tho probably the best, sonny curtis wrote the tune, and the crickets released the hit post buddy holly, around 1958...
I was in Canada (Medicine Hat Alberta) in October 1973 and saw the “Frank Fuller Four” at a bar called the Royal, who sang this. I bought a Tape from them for $2 (long Gone) which had this song on.....Now to my question.......is it the same group?
Back in the mid 1960's, my pals and I fought the law out in Ojai, Cal., and the law lost.! Sheet, they were messin with teens from Orange County!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The clip of the jail guard dancing "the monkey" with Lada Edmund Jr is still kinda funny after all these years. Thanks for sharing this kinescope from NBC's Hullabaloo. May Mr. Fuller's murderer(s) be brought to justice and may Bobby be inducted into the rock hall someday.
Yep. They used to lip sync much more frequently in those days, and the mics sometimes had funny, futuristic shapes. Nonetheless, they were just for decoration.
Three months after this top ten hit Bobby Fuller was found dead under suspicious circumastances. He was 23 and on can only wonder what might have been.
i love how so many cheese dicks out there think this is a new song (green day wrote it, no the clash wrote it) yo dude does your dad own a record player?

im 15 and i gotta say this is a greeeat song lovely to lisen and sing along to always garrentied to put a smile on your face if u add a silly dance and a cowboy hat :P
by far the best known?!?! I guess it depends upon which generation you are asking. For Boomers this BF4 version is the first and in some cases the only that comes to mind. The Clash version is good too. I think it's cool when a younger generation does a cover on an earlier song. To me it shows a respect and interest in the older generation.
I'm not saying either one is better or worse, but do a search for "I fought the law" followed by each band name and you'll find more results with the Clash than Bobby Fuller.
And to clear things up by "best known" I meant more people know about it, not that it was the best version.
You are right about the number of views for the Clash cover. It just means that more people who use You Tube are familiar with the newer song. More Gen. X'ers than Boomers are familiar with YouTube. The only difference I don't like about the Clash version is how they say "..I killed my baby" instead of "..I left my baby" Even Green Day uses the original lyrics. Just Clash being Clash, I guess, probably appeals their fans. Neither version is 'better', if you like it, it's good.
I'm not sure what you're talking about with the lyrics. I don't know what version you've heard, by the studio recording of the clash song says "i left my baby" too.
@beautifulmess72 oh you kind of hsve to give them a break--us old guys know--lol, we see this all the time . It is one reason the newer bands copy == someone else made it a hit
monsterman100: I can tell by the videos u chose as favorites that u have crappy taste in videos and probably crappy taste in music. The 50s and 60s have great music. People wouldn't do cover songs to begin with if they didn't have respect for such great bands.

This song was first made by Sonny Curtis and the Crickets, Buddy Holly's band, after Holly died in 1959. Bobby Fuller Four had the biggest hit with the song, though.
This was a great song. I finally found out who sang the oldies but goodies song. I thought it was "I caught the law and the law one". Then, I heard another singer singing this song and I found out it was called "I fought the law". I liked the part when they sang "Her robbing people with a six gun". I may buy the CD of this song.
