The final marks of Merlin were about as powerful as the griffon, used in DeHavilland Hornets and the P51H. That went 490 mph! And theres one flying, check it out on you tube.
@SvenTviking Thats absolutely incorrect. The Griffon was far more powerful than the late marks of merlin. Merlin 130/1 top HP was 2060hp. Griffons 130 top 2500hp.
As Joe Smith said in 1942 ' The good big'un will eventually beat the good little'un.'
@Xiolablu3 Ah, but I was talking about war time Griffons. Even the Spiteful only had about 2,250hp, not that much more than the Merlin 130. They doubled the hp of the Merlin during the war.
That's why never go to the airfield itself and seach for a spot near the airfield in order to escape the even annoying blablablablabla... this fucks up the video your taping...
The BBMF pilots are the luckiest pilots on the planet! They give up leave to fly Spits & Hurricanes, I'd give my right arm!! lol What an awesome machine, the sound of the Griffon makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
I agree that the Merlin sounds great in the P-51. The Packard built Merlins had almost 1700 hp (didn't they?) in later variants of the Mustang which makes them sing sweetly but purposefully. A brilliant aircraft. The Griffon sounds more like a DB motor. Torque and not sweetness was the most important factor - to lunge more weight around.
Compared with the Merlin, the Griffon sounds like a great hairy tractor. It's got far more grunt, far more torque, but it doesn't have the musical sound of a Merlin.
its suday afternoon, and this baby just flew right over the top of my house at about 200ft, out over saunton sands to mix it with the seagulls for 10 minutes, and then back over the top of my house again...AWESOME! (a damn fine throaty roar, but i much prefer the whine of a merlin!)
I agree with the Griffon sounding better than a Merlin in a Spitfire, especially the other BBMF Mk XIX, 'The Last'. Merlins do sound good, but they sound better in a P-51 for some reason! Wierd!
i prefur the Griffon. Id love to hear a Mosquito wit two Griffons. Too bad the Martin Baker MB5 didnt come out strong or we'd be hearing Griffon music all day long.

Griffon: sounds angry, like it wants to fight!

magnificent, but when you walk down the street in my local town, and a spitfire
flies over (mainly on Sundays), none of the youngsters raise their heads to look at the history above them
-so sad, but they just don't give a "damn"

Merlin sounds best in a mustang, but I prefer the griffon in the spit, it just sounds absolutely terrifying! which is good!

Someoone was rebuilding an MB.5 or recreating one in the USA did it ever get in the air? I thinkd the guy's name was John Marlin.
juzzi07 3 years ago

imagine the mosquito with 2 griffons 2,200 + horse power on each wing would have been a bastard to catch
