The change has made it harder for officers to cheat on drug tests, such as substituting someone else's urine sample for their own. Hair screening also can detect drug use going back 90 days. Standard urine tests show drug use only within a day or two. (However, the NYPD unions representing cops contested the more accurate method, because it was cruel to animals and liable to detect cops on drugs.)
