wow, I remember the ride when it was like this. but as many others are saying, yes it is very boring to a kid the age I was back when it was this way.
The new one is less boring than the old one, that I will admit, informative and all but, I fell asleep though most, - but I really like this mini ballad. I have the Disney Parks soundtrack with this song on it. I always thought it would make a nice mainstream love song if the lyrics were changed.
@AsianAgentScully Yeah, the lyrics are kind of dopey. I like the song at the end of the old ride better anyway. Someone uploaded it on youtube somewhere.
It's amazing that this was filmed in May 1983. Most people just had old-fashioned cini-film cameras at that time, not modern-style video recorders. Great quality and sound too. I wonder how much footage your Dad's friend has from that trip? It was more than 5 years after this before my family went to EPCOT for the first time.
Just some footage of your generic attractions that still existed when you went. I know, we were lucky to get some stuff long before people had video cameras, in fact, not everyone had VCR's. If you think is amazing, check out Disneyland's 25th Aniversary parade, where someone had a video camera in 1980.
During the first 15 years of EPCOT Center, most of the rides were based on the idea of being inspirational and optimistic in quite a serious way, but in a serious way that made you feel a sense of wonder. And most of the rides involved slow moving vehicles or presentations.
What happened after 15 years was Disney decided not enough people were visiting the park because the rides were too boring. So they changed a lot of them to thrill rides. The problem is that thrill rides date very quickly.
I miss the EPCOT of old, as you describe here. The EPCOT with the sleek, monochrome view of the future, full of optimism and wonder. I'm so glad I got to experience it a few times before they changed it all.
The song was written by songwriting team Joel Hirschhorn & Al Kasha, whom also wrote the songs to Disney's "Pete's Dragon" and "David Copperfield" (1993) starring Julian Lennon and Sheena Easton.
Wrong, this song was written by Robert Moline, who also wrote "Listen to the Land," "Canada," and co wrote "Golden Dreams." Hirschhorn and Kasha wrote the other song, "Universe of Energy."
I hate what they've done to the universe of engergy now. I miss this preshow and the great original Universe of Energy song. I do have this song and can give it to you in high quality if you ever want to redub this. Thanks for putting up such a great memory.
Can you send me a high quality audio version of this song? I do a podcast called WEDway Radio and we are doing a throwback episode on the Universe of Energy. Can you help me out?
I have to say that I like the show the way it is now. Some people may not agree with me that's ok working at the Universe Of Energy was the Best time of my life. I was a Disney CP. I like Ellen's Dream it's funny. I know the Cast Members that work there.
Err...methinks not 1983. The moving squares in the Radok screen (named after Emil Radok, the filmmaker who designed it) were not operational until 1984. Perhaps 1993?
I was never around to see The Universe Of Energy the way it was back in the 80's but I can tell you now that this ride is cool. Working at the Universe Of Energy is way cool. I was a CP student so I got to work there .
They should have left the Universe of Energy open exactly the way it was.

This is an awesome vid for an awesome song. I really like the lyrics too:
You see my friends, the computer make life easier.
Saves me time and headaches too.
He sorts things out, analyses in a shake.
My enormous problem, to him's a piece of cake!

@scottof83 But who was the singer?

This was the best ride at Epcot because it had Dinosaurs. I'm glad I got to see Epcot before they changed it a little.

I love that song. I wish they still had this version at Epcot sometimes instead of the one with Ellen.

I miss the Radok preshow of course, so tks for the upload. This song slightly reminds me of Kenny Rogers' "Through the Years".

The Radok screen will never be surpassed by that movie screen they have now. Long live the Radok!

This was early 80's, because they still had Magic Journey's at Journey Into Imagination at the time.

am I reading that right, Taped in 1983. WOW you must've had the first camcorder
Disneydanny 4 years ago
That is correct, although it was not my dad's, it was one of his Disneyland friends who dubbed him a copy.
