That is a very smart way to conserve water.
A suggestion that I have for conserving even more water would be to build water silos out of wood, or if wood isn't available, out of stone or concrete.
Have the water that melts be diverted into a silo, and then feed the crops from this silo.
This would conserve water and allow you to store it for later use.
