Extreme nationalism of the past two World Wars couldn't unify Europe under a single empire - What makes the prospect of peaceful federalization of Europe any more likely?
The EU will survive the financial crisis with Greece, however a restructuring of enforcement mechanisms will result because of this dilemma. It is a possibility that if the PIG nations fall one by one......the EU could collapse......but I dont believe it will.
What makes me always laugh uncontrallably is all the prognosticating;all these prophets wind up with apie in their face;it makes for a goog comedy, not avery fruitful political debate.
Yes, we are at at major junction in the EU's future; the economic crisis could cause a collapse but equally it might help bring the EU together. For example, it now seems possible that Ireland will vote "yes" to the Lisbon Treaty.
Also it now looks like the Euro needs a greater degree of political integration to work successfully.
A row over Turkey could blow everything apart, but it's really only America that are going all out on that. And last time I looked, America wasn't in the EU.
I didn't say that America has no influence, infact it has far too much influence; that could change though if the EU had a common defence and foreign policy and further political integration.
Not surprisingly America only has its own interests in mind - including Turkey in the EU, the two big wars, and the US dollar as THE global currency.
You must not understand the wars in the Middle East if you believe they are not designed to benefit the EU and America alike.
Do you not realize that the dollar being the premier currency also benefits the EU, too? Sure, not as much as the Euro would but imagine if an Eastern..or Middle Eastern, nation owned it.
I know what you're saying about the wars, but I don't see how there was ever going to be a "good" ending to either war.
The problem with using one country's currency for the whole world is that if that country goes into depression we all do. Plus that country can "print" money like crazy and devalue their own debts. A basket of currencies and commodites is more stable.
Yep, better the $US than some ME currency, but I can't see that happening.
It won't happen now, but the future is totally up in the air. Things have the potential to change very fast these days.
There will always be a world staple when it comes to currency. Sure, it isn't a good thing but everyone has grown accustomed to such an idea. As am American I wouldn't mind if it became the Euro, but if it became anything else both Europe and America are in trouble.
European citizens are not prepared to give up their autonomy only to be told how to live their lives by a small group of un-elected,unacountable,pampered and permanent `commissioners´
`Of course there will be transfers of sovereignty. But would I be intelligent to draw the attention of public opinion to this fact ?´ (Jean-Claude Juncker,3 July 07).

The New born Slavic Union wil prevail over colapsing EU.
Im from Slovenia, EU member, our economy is growing while western europian countries are falling cuase USA can't afford to buy thier stuff anymore. While, on the other hand, countries with slavic culture are raising, Russia overpassed USA in militaly tecnology as obviusly seen by Russian 5th generation figher while USA still unhappy about thier 4th generation jet fighers and not even starting to prototype the 5th generation ones.
Have you been brainwashed? The US F-22 / F-35 are the ONLY 5h generation fighters in service! Also it easy for a developing economy to grow, less easy when its developed. Think new born baby... doubles it size pretty rapidly, less easy when its 20 years old!
From newspaper "F-117 has been lost in combat to the Yugoslav Army. On 27 March 1999, during the Kosovo War by Colonel Zoltán Dani, equipped with the Isayev S-125 'Neva' anti-aircraft missile system, downed a F-117A callsign "Vega 31," with a Serbian improved Neva-M missile. According to NATO Commander Wesley Clark and other NATO generals, Yugoslav air defences detected F-117s by operating their radars on unusually long wavelengths, making them visible to radar for brief periods.
