  • what an amazing game, brilliant to see!

  • If you'd learn how to read... Worthington was playing for Leicester City that day we were talking about. Not the Bolton goal which was on TV. The Leicester goal at SJP was his best ever, but not televised it remains in our memories.... OK?

  • Im a Bolton fan and was in the Lever end and thirty odd years down the line still rate this as one of the best games i ever saw the 2 following replays were petty good too after agoaless draw atSt James Park you beat us 2-1 at Elland Rd . As for supermacs 2nd goal at Bolton ....well what can you say ....one of the fiercest strikes ive ever seen .....great game...great players...great chants from the terraces , great battles before and after the games.. even the bovril was great but fu****g HOT

  • I was at this game. The place was bouncing. Happy memories!

  • World class finish

  • Big Fat Sam strikes again? Fat wanker

  • Great to see a REAL atmosphere generated from The Terraces!

  • I love the way the commentator says 'what a typical newcaste goal', because thats still true today, it's real alan shearer play, taking advantage of sloppy defence.

  • i met supermac on saturday :) nice fella

  • Great commentary from Barry Davies, and what a cracking match!

  • OOOOOOOOH what a goal

  • 1927gallagher what are you on about about contradicting me?...you will notice I said he had the ball in the Gallowgate End...passed to Nattrass and after taking a couple of strides over the centre circle hit his shot towards ....it must be the Leazes End as that is the opposite end to the Gallowgate!!!

  • Sorry - didn't read it properly.

  • I was at this game. Fantastic memories.

  • NO not his best ever...that was agains Leicester City in the 70's when he had the ball in the Gallowgate penalty area and passed it out to Irving Nattrass who chipped a return ball which was just past the centre circle...Malcolm took a couple of strides over the centre circle and hit an out of this world strike which beat mark wallington all ends up!!!...no cameras were there...but just ask any Newcastle fan to name his best goal and that was it.

  • Sorry to contradict you but the goal was at the Leazes end. An absolutely tremendous goal all the same.

  • @HowayBonnyLad Right on the money marra. I was in the Leazes End that day and will never forget it. Particularly as Frank Worthington had predicted he was going to play Supermac off the park. Sad bastard that he was...

  • @noushitaisa Frank Worthington didnt sign for Bolton until the 77 season so this cant be right

  • @50sthrowback If you would learn how to read... We were talking about Macdonald's best goal for Newcastle being against _Leicester_ City_ in 1975 -- not against Bolton. Pay attention won't you...

  • I was at this game. Great memories.

  • Malcolm MacDonalds second goal in this game is outstanding. I love the commentary too from Barry Davies

  • What a cracker of a match.

Great to see the away end packed, fantastic atmosphere.

    '70s football at its finest.

  • i was there one of the greatest matches and atmospheres ever from both sets of players and fans. can`t believe it was 34 years ago. thanks for the memories .

  • supermac burns the grass banner at this game,me and alan carr.would love to see it again if anyone has a photo.ian macdonald canada.

  • what was the final score?

  • Supermac would be worth about 100 million if he were around today.

  • I'm also a Sunderland fan but this is one of my favourite games ever. MacDonald's two goals are two of the best I've ever seen - brilliant pace, strength and control on a terrible surface for the first, sheer ferocity and accuracy for the second. I lived in Ireland at the time but a few months later I moved to Bolton, purely by coincidence!

  • ke cagata... andate a farvi fottere

  • fuck off fat sam, ya piece of shit

  • just brilliant ,,,and this footage is very reminiscent of 70's football in general! ..i.e. having to watch the match from between a couple of girders supporting the floodlights!!

  • Malcolm Macdonald was a brilliant player!!

  • Why don't Newcastle fans have a problem that Macdonald is a 'cockney'. I thought they were against that?

  • Eh?. No against mike Ashley and his cohorts running the club from London.Dennis Wise in charge of transfer policy from London without setting foot near SJP.That is the cockney mafia you refer too. players like Supermac and Sir Les Ferdinand are lauded at NUFC.Its got nowt to do with being a cockney.

  • Nowt to do with being cockney? Why refer to them as the cockney mafia then? I don't understand.

  • What I meant was the only cockneys fans have a problem with are those running the club from London. Jiminez and Wise (Mike Ashleys chums nontheless) were in charge of transfer policy yet do not come to SJP or see the players, therefore cannot possibly see where the team needs strengthening.Players like Milner were sold behind Keegans back and Wise Buys brought in who Keegan knew nothing about.Keegan quit because when he signed the contract to return he was told he would have full control.

  • Ashley clearly stabbbed Keegan in the back when he gave Wise and Jiminez transfer control-jobs for the boys as it were.Ashley clearly didnt trust Keegan and had only made a puppet manager to appease fans, whilst his own men would effectivley run the club.Keegan was obviously not going to stand for that and neither were the fans.Cockney mafia was the term used as we want the club run from SJP, not faceless suits 300 mile away.Supermac is a cockney but he is loved because he did great things here.

  • Right I see. So you have a problem with Wise and Jiminez. Still don't see where they come from has got to do with it. Why not just call them the mafia? And what difference does the fact they do buisness in London make? If they were to go to SJP they'd only be attacked and abused.

And Supermac was born in West London I believe so he isn't a cockney. Same as Wise. Cockneys are from East London.

  • No cockneys aren't from east london, cockneys are from the area that surrounds the bow bells in the square mile no matter which direction. Most of East London, including West ham isn't in cockney territory.

  • Either way.....WIse isn't a cockney.

  • STFU!

  • Oh ok....I will because you've said that.

  • Macdonald?...thats a Scottish name.

  • BEAUTIFULL GOAL!!!

  • been looking for this clip for years, how is this not it the top fifty goals of all time, still sends a shiver

  • classic game one of the best goals ever at burnden from supermac .thompson was a magician use to get in ground early just to watch him in warm up doin his tricks

  • Wow what a goal no wonder he was nicknamed super mac

  • his niece is like one of my best mates :]]

  • Supermac best striker to put a newcastle shirt on, well alongside shearer but shearer was boring, supermac always had something to say and knocked people out...

  • i remember this f**k me what a goal, he could do 100m in just over 10 secs awesome player, and I'm a Forest fan so no bias from me.

  • I almost pi**ed myself when i first saw Supermacs goal on '100 great goals' Has anyone put that on youtube, cant seem to find it.

  • great wing play here by Peter Thompson..he was in his late 30's then but....sublime skills!!!

  • Newcastle circa 08 aren't a patch on this team...even with all the foreign "stars" one of the best Geordie sides ever...unlucky not to win something..

  • WOT A GOAL FROM SUPER MAC !!!!!!!

  • Great game , a great Bolton team. Paul Jones deserved a cap , he'd walk into the England team today.

This game is one of the best I attended. Bolton v Stoke on a Sunday was another that stands out.

  • I'll agree with this. I'm a Sunderland fan and remember this game on MOTD back then - crackig goal from Supermac. I recall Sunderland tussling a lot with Bolton in them days and Paul Jones was a fantastic centre half. He was the class to Allardyce's muscle.

  • What i'd give for days like these to return.

Burnden park packed with 46.000 fans and a great cup tie between my beloved Bolton and Newcastle..Thanks for posting Eaststand172

  • yup I remember...Geoff Nulty was an underrated and very brave skipper...scored a cracker v Spurs in the 76 LC semifinal!!

  • that game and the ensueing replays will live in my memory forever, football was about passion then from the players and fans alike im afraid the heart and soul has gone from the game now ! ps just got off the carpark at leeds after the 3rd replay lol !

  • What memories! I was 9 years old and it was my first season watching the Wanderers! Went to the replay at Newcastle (we was robbed- still bitter about it) and at Elland Road! I still have the programmes!

  • great game great memories! I was there too the game and the ensuing replays took their toll on both teams so a depleted Newcastle lost narrowly to Man City in the LC Final and then to Derby in the 6th round of the FA Cup a few months later Mac was away to the Arsenal

  • Does anyone remember Geoff Nulty getting his jaw bust open in a collision with Sidall at the lever end and having blood all over his shirt? That happened literally feet away from me.

  • I was at this game in the lever end. It was a real epic game. The 0-0 replay was a great game too up at Newcastle and I remember John Byrom hit the bar in that one, and if I remember correctly Bolton also had a goal disallowed. Newcastle went through 2-1 at Leeds in the 2nd replay. I had to queue for hours on a feezing evening to get a ticket for the 3-3 game. Worth it!
