This movie has a surprising amount of pathos in it, especially for being so tense. The guy creeps you out, you fear him. But as the movie goes on, you see all he goes through and why he ended up the way he did, and it's just sad.
"Bad Ronald" How was Ronald so bad? He was suppressed by his mother, abandoned by his father, and then ridiculed by his peers. All this drove him to accidentally murder the girl. Then he went crazy from living in the wall and losing his mother. How "bad" really was Ronald? Not bad at all. Only a victim of people and circumstance.
@stitchesful I think the use of "Bad" is just irony. I remember seeing this movie back in the early 90's in a Health Class in HS. I thought the same thing you did.
@WillGotti The use of "bad" probably is just irony, but I still don't think it should've been used within the title of the movie. I still think that it says the wrong thing about Ronald. They had you watch this movie in Health Class? That's interesting. What was the reason for that?
@stitchesful I don't know. It was the early 70's and any behavior that was against the norm was labelled bad. Honestly I think that's what the filmmakers wanted was for viewers to question the irony. I'm not defending their choice of title I'm just really trying to understand it myself. I don't remember the reason why we had to watch it in health class. My only guess is the psychological effects that Ronald had to go through from the murder to being caged up in the attic.
@WillGotti You're probably right that viewers were supposed to question the irony of it by having "bad" in the title. That's very perceptive, and I never would've thought of that. I think it's good that they had you watch this in health class, and I think they should show movies like this for psychological understandings of things more often.
Come up with your own damned movie- make your mark. Fuck recreating ideas or expanding on someone else's work- it's not about tribute, it's about influence. Do you think every director and writer influenced by a movie should remake it? I don't think so! But I do believe in carrying the style into your movie. At least do that. Do not redirect the intent of the writers and directors of the original movie- let them do that
@imbluz Because this was the lasst time when girls were encouraged to look as natural as possible and even ate regular food. Now all the girls put on a TON of make-up, eat Genetically modified food, dye their hair 24/7 and ruin its texture and make it fall out, smoke and do drugs. Look at Lyndsay's Lohan's tranformation from cute 18 year old to the basket case freak she is now. She looks like she's 40! I'm not even going to go into Heidi Montag. Whenever I see 70s ladies I just sigh. Good times.
Brett Meisner passed away on September 13, 2010. Therefore, he is no longer writing on the remake of 'Bad Ronald'. R.I.P. BM! As for remakes, "Bad Ronald" is one of the few movies that deserves a good remake. It wasn't available on VHS and only became available on dvd a couple of years ago; meaning several generations have NOT seen this great chilling movie. But, please stop hating on Brett; may he rest in peace! :)
@toolofthesouth - to the contrary, it was actually put out on VHS. I own a copy of the USA Home Video release. This film doesn't need to be remade, but rather re-released and paid proper tribute.
What is wrong with remaking this film, the original production would get more exposure if they remade this film I do not see any harm in that. That way people would be able to evaluate the two.
Errr I'm all for nostalgia and going down memory lane now and then but this movie was pretty lame when it came out. Yea, I watched it when it originally aired and everybody at school ripped on it heavily. I sure never expected to see clips of it ever again..... Anyway maid-for-TV movies at that time were expected to be bad, which I suppose was/is part of the charm to a new generation.
Thanks for the clip, but please, DO NOT remake this film. It's a classic TV movie of the 70s, and I doubt any actor of today could pull it off as Scott Jacoby did. Today's television movie market would just make it more gory and lurid. The understatement and subtlety is what makes this film.
Kid reminds me of Donnie Iris! Just watched this movie recently though, it was great! Only about an hour long, but it wasn't boring or full of useless dialogue and filler crap.
