best version i've seen. rocking on all fronts. ric was a fortunate mofo to find these guys. he'd be playing the sunday happy hour at shaggy's piano bar.
@TruthAxe All of the members make up The Cars, although the new album is good, it needed Ben, just like it would also need Ocasik or Hawks or Easton or Robinson! The Cars are The Cars
Yo, cherry picker. @theDeckisStacked I've given Ocasik his due credit. Did you not see the bit about some cheesy rhythm guitar parts?
You seem to be hung up on The Cars. I'm not arguing against The Cars. I've claimed that if Easton, Orr and Robinson formed their own band, such a band would have showcased their musicianship, musicianship constrained by a limiting vehicle as The Cars were.
Cheesy sythns, quirky lyrics and crappy rhythm guitar can only go so far — 5 LPs.
Except, your theory suffers from a fundamental flaw @theDeckisStacked , as mine isn't theory.
Besides, Ocasik did little more than write lyrics and some cheesy rhythm guitar parts. Roy Thomas Baker produced the band and not Ric as you claim, falsely, of course.
Easton wrote his leads. Robinson wrote his drumming parts. Hawkes wrote his keyboard parts. Ben wrote his own songs.
In short, a different band would have arisen from Easton, Orr, Robinson — a better one.
not to sound creepy or weird but Ben Orr is buried less then an hour from my house, its a very peaceful cemetary here in Ohio. Very quaint and humble grave marker, all it has is a guitar engraved in the marble beside his name. He was always the perfect gentleman and he proved it many times. RIP Ben
thia was a ric song kinda weird he only played rhythm on it , what a great band . i was 3 when this came out my sister played there stuff non stop so glad .
The Cars are an ultra-talented band. Great singers and musicians. Beats anything out today. How could Madonna be in the Hall before these guys. I guess it's now a popularity contest....sucks!
This absolutely rocks... for me the measure of a band is how they perform live... and this is such a good performance... Great energy... I had no idea how many of the Cars classic tunes Ben Orr did the lead vocals... He was fantastic... I think he sang most of my favorite songs. Thanks for the post.
My dad got me into this band. He said he listened to them when he was my age, literally. Myself being 18 now and him being 18 at the time of the self-titled being released. This is now one of my favorite bands of all-time.
Ok, watching these videos in this tour from the late 70s finally makes me realize how innovative the Cars were. Honestly, all this time (I'm 20) I've thought they were "just another new wave band," but I've seen that they're a rock band with amazing use of instruments, talent, vocals, everything!
I also never realized how important Ben Orr was until watching these videos. :s And I'm a fan of Ric's vocal work .. . . . Anyway,
The Cars are leaders and inspiration! And goofy-looking guys! :D
damn right they should be in the rock and roll hall of fame! asap! The friggin righteous brothers are in and the cars aren't? what about alice cooper, rush?
Ben didn't get to sing lead enough! He had a good voice. I would have given anything to have seen them just once. Ben, I love you and miss you. R.I.P, baby.
@girlmusic2remember the CARS did reunite this year but unfortuntely without Benjamin Orr. May 2011 my ultimate dream came true and i seen the CARS in concert. I felt his presence though and I think he s with them in spirit. You should check my channel out.
RnRHOF? That whole organization is a joke now. Someone needs to make a new one and start inducting deserving bands that the RnRHOF missed, like The Cars and Rush. At the same time, NOT inducting bands or people like Madonna and LL.Cool J. Sure, they're great in their own styles but not RnR.
I was so crazy for Ben back then and always loved him, but lately he's been back fully in my daily consciousness. He always had some kind of magical quality to him that still gets me to this day.
i think they are a very influential band. The way they designed their presentations in videos is very "high concept". They were a smart bunch and had some awesome songs. They were also campy and satirical. There is a lot to engage the mind in what they did.
the Cars are simply brilliant... the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame voting is rigged / so much bullshit...Rush Should have been inducted way before Madonna
@deiderique to be honest when they announced some of the groups that got elected I almost think that the RNR Hall of fame is just a joke so it might be a compliment of sorts
The RRHOF won't induct The Cars? Let them. The beauty of it is that for people like us in here who love The Cars WE know that they will forever be inshrined in not only our memories but our hearts. It's an outrage of leviathan proportions for The Cars not to be inducted. The bands they influenced and the stamp they put on Rock & Rock is inmeausurable. Don't worry Ben (Orr), we'l make sure The Cars tunes are forever played on the American landscape. The Cars...U.S. Rock legends.
I am curious. Who the hell are you talking to that never heard of the Cars? Either they are over 80 or under 15. It really is just that simple. One of the best trend setter bands in history. Please get new friends if they really don't know about this band. They can have little credibility.
LOL, the cars were not well known? Not sure where you came up with that. They were one of the best original bands of their time. They were quite well known (they did play the US festival in 83 which means they were pretty well known to even be invited there).
one album wonders ..my thebeau?candy o,shake it up,and even though it's not my bag heartbeat city was multiple platinum.learn your rock n' roll history.
Undoubtedly one of the best of all time. Under rated by many. Unjustly criticized by many. Just listen is all that is needed to feel the real enthusiasm that WAS THE CARS!!!!
way, way ahead of their time. this shit still holds up today with no problem. if you were thier in the late 70s you know just how good these guys were. great freaking songwriting and musicians. all the crap bands from today should take a look at vids like this and learn something about music and how its done. its an orangy sky, always its some other guy, its just a broken lullaby. well its such a wavy midnight and im going to slip into insane, peace all. rip ben.
Yeah...Well ..One Album wonders do not "usually" make the Hall..however..i think your quite right regarding Kansas and The Cars...Some Albums/Songs are so entwined into our lives that they indeed are HOF worthy!! Hug, Jenni, 16 from Chicago area ;)
Ty 12Monkeys5...I just love retro and classic rock bands!! My grandfather was a rock promoter in the Chicago area and he turned me on to so many different bands and song that when I compare to what some of what is happening today in my era, it almost doesnt compare (dont get me wrong..this is ALOT of great stuff today) but for example..recently I heard a song entitled, "Hide In Your Shell" by Supertramp and like OMFG..i am SO blown away by that song!! Hugs, Jenni
What a band!! I was shocked to find out there not in the RRHOF. It doesn't surprise me though, RRHOF is a joke. Bob Welch of Fleetwood Mac wasn't included when the Mac was inducted. What a joke. Sorry I got sidetracked on Fleetwood Mac, but it irritates me about the RRHOF
