  • You can hear a little Arnold Jacobs in his playing.... Very nice.

  • DO RE MI FA SOL LA SI

  • dang. he seems like an amazing educator!

  • I wish my tone was this good.

  • It's actually a Bb tuba, he's just freakin' huge.

  • @mikedaguy no, i play that exact tuba it EEb tuba.

  • does he really need captions? his english is perfectly understood.

  • ...no meistersinger? haahaha

  • i like the sound of an eb tuba now lol does he play a contrabass too or just eb like most British players?

  • thank you so much for not puffing your cheeks ... It seems like every tuba player at my school, even in the symphonic band do this and I hate seeing it because it's just plain wrong... This is coming from an oboe player lol

  • sounds really good just like an lso player should sound

  • You look mexican when you play...

  • PH:Join me and I can complete your training....with our combined strength we can bring order to the LSO

  • what kind of tuba is this?

  • @ 0nisful the way we get different notes is our lips, we either tighten of loosen them to get the right pitch.

  • I dont know much about the tuba, how does he get the different notes..I only see three buttons he's pressing?

  • @0nisful Its just like the trumpet. Sure there is only three buttons, but as you tighten your lips, the higher notes you play, and the more you loosen your lips, the lower notes you play. Playing high recuires more air, and playing low dosen't take much air at all.

  • @rickytimes Wow that must be really hard to get good at! Thanks for the info! =)

  • @0nisful Don't be fooled, playing low does take alot of puff to get the air moving, for higher notes you need to blow air "faster" for lower notes you need to move more air in total. It depends on instrument but that fits for almost every wind instrument

  • @rickytimes there's four on the tuba he's playing. the 4th valve is played by his left hand.

  • What a fitting voice for a tuba player!

  • "D-A-Z Array"

LMAO I had the CC on while watching and just had to stop to laugh.

Of course I speak of Dies Irae

  • Wow the Ride on Eb.

  • I have been very fortunate in that I've been taught by him. He is truly amazing in so many ways. Teaches not just about music but so many other points. Very inspirational and very down to earth also. Had fun and learned so much from a magnificent teacher. Thanks. Smiling Jonny.

  • I've actually met Patrick, and played tuba with him (kind of), he's such a nice guy. He told me near enough the exact same things when I met him.

  • out of tune?

  • he can sing his parts LOL

  • @wrongbuzz most definitely not. your voice does not affect what onstrument you can play, your voice has nothing to do with playing any wind or brass instrument :)

  • They meant to spell "DAZ" array like Dies Irae, right?

  • this guy sounds like a tuba when he speaks!

  • His first breath is amazing....

  • is a baritone voice needed to play the lowest brass wind instrument?

  • @wrongbuzz Considering that I'm a soprano and a good tubaplayer... no.

  • @Khetodo Thanks for your reply ! actually my comment was a mix of failed sarcasm and stupidity... and I regret it ! < :o)

  • HAHA. the subtitles said D-A-Z Array instead of Dies Irae. lol.

  • My right arm tends to bounce around a lot when I play (just like Patrick here), but my teacher always tells me off a for it. Is there any particular reason why I shouldn't? Any help would be appreciated!

  • @tomnottim A lot of teachers believe that extra motion is distrating for an audience. I can't say that it's thought I adhere to, but that's the mentality.

  • @tomnottim it can make the instrument change the positioning on your lip and also you might bash your teeth in. i used to move my arm a lot but i smacked my mouth by accident once playing czardas (arr. Oystein Baadsvik) at a concert and it really hurt. so i started balancing a pencil on my arm and focusing on not letting it fall off and eventually i stopped doing it. hope this helps :)

  • @tomnottim it really depends if its actually affecting your sound negatively or not. If it doesn't affect it at all, I'd say go for it, who cares what you do as long as what comes out of the bell sounds good

  • He has the best tone I have ever heard.

  • omigoodness i play tuba too and this was really super helpful

  • YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

I would love for u to make another tuba lesson or masterclass soon.

  • ITS GOD!!!

  • XS God i hate the way Eb tuba sounds.

  • 1.47 sec miss one note!

    OMG

  • @fullsoul10 No he didnt, it's all there dumbass

  • they could ask for the bydlo from pictures at an exhibition too, i'd like to hear how would he explain it and play it! amazing anyway

  • i wanna hear him do an evil laugh haha

  • @Cummnz It's a 4 valve, the 4th valve is in a similar place as seen on most euphoniums, on the side.

  • you can just tell when he plays that it is perfect sound.

  • He's got a lovely sound!

  • He must be a great teacher. It looks like he really cares that you are skilled and that you also have fun doing it. I loved playing the tuba in high school!

  • thumbs up if you think this dudes voice sounds like the dyson dude.

  • I play the tuba ,usually an E flat, four key, rotor valve, and love this video. Would love to learn these pieces. I still would love his voice. Eventually...

  • His Tone is similiar to a trumpet players, I enjoy it alot

  • Great stuff Patrick! Cheers from Spain!

  • hahaha 5:06

  • Is it just me or does he (or the LSO) play on a different hertz in tuning? I thought most British and American orchestras play at A=440, with some exceptions including the NY Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

  • A tuba player could NEVER have a voice more perfect for being a tuba player XD

  • I played a BBb Besson in High School. Never liked the weight of it, but it had a big sound and the intonation was spot on. Wish I had that thing still...

  • @4:03 the subtitles say "D-A-Z" array and anyone who knows about music will know he's referring to the Dies Irae chant melody Berlioz used. That's too funny!

  • It is an E flat tuba.

  • I've never seen a tuba player play with the middle of their finger :l

  • what is the tuba keyed in?

  • @19CJohnson Concert pitch. Some are in F.

  • @19CJohnson it can depend. Patricks tuba is a Besson Sovereign Eb Bass. but most orchestral tuba players using Eb tubas transpose into Concert Pitch. but there are tubas keyed in f, CC and BBb aswell.

  • Comment removed

  • @cezza92 I know what tubas are keyed in, I am a Tuba performance major. I was just wondering what his tuba was keyed in. Thanks.

  • @19CJohnson okay dont have to get all stuck up about it do you? god.

  • @cezza92 well I wasn't trying to. I was just trying to clarify that i wasn't dumb, not that I was claiming I was better than you in some way.

  • @19CJohnson Patrick Harrild often performs with the Eb Besson 981 compensator. It's the only horn I use nowadays. He also performs sometimes with a Meinl Weston 2165. In the UK, the mantra is to master the Eb before branching off into other keys. In fact, Patrick Harrild's teacher, the late John Fletcher, took a few months off (with LSO blessing) from the LSO to learn how to really master a large Holton CC (similar to the 2165) for Mahler, Bruckner, etc.

  • @cezza92 Don't forget G/GG Tubas!

  • @Tuba408Bass ummm there no such thing.... theres only F, Eb/EEb, Bb/BBb and C/CC... theres no such thing as a G or a GG tuba...

  • @angodamango Yes there is. G tubas (or Contrbass Bugles) have been used in drum corps since the 70s. And makers of tubas make G tubas out of larger euphoniums. You should do your research, there are tubas in every key. They are just not massed produced.

  • @Tuba408Bass my appologies then... unfortunatly i didnt know there was such thing as a "contrabass bugel"

  • @Tuba408Bass must have made a big clusterfuck typo, acutally meant CC tubas :)

  • He has a tuba-voice! :)

  • Oh jeez, if only we had better cameras, like for Life in a Day...

  • Cool! I am not a tuba player but it cool to see videos teaching music!

  • Thanks Patrick

  • cool music man

  • love it

  • I just listened to his voice...

  • Comment removed

  • i feel like playing my tuba now XD

  • Greatest voice ever xD

  • @DRCxGFX I want his voice in my GPS.

  • @unitednerdsbeproud I want his Tuba's voice in my GPS

  • @unitednerdsbeproud screw the gps, i want his voice to narrate my life, even when im sleeping...snore, snore, snore. better than sex...him repeating snore for 12 hours

  • @tackledparsley i'd choose him, morgan freeman, or casey kasem
