  • 80F, no wind & clear sky in Manhattan Beach today (Los Angeles), in January.

Rode my bicycle 25 miles on the beach bike path, sweated out last night's beer & hummed this tune most of the way.

Singer-songwriters this good are rare these days.

    Take care now...

  • I love this song and I love this man. Keep on singing for us Jonathan!

  • Jonathian Edwards, I remember this song being sung at my 5th grade teacher Mr. Coopers, birthday party at Feather River Elementary school in Challenge Ca. Will never forget this song. Had a major crush on my teacher. My favorite uncle got drafted to vietman (I cried) brothers were called to service and I remember my teacher who was 25 saying war did not solve a thing. Thankyou for this song, still loving it.

  • He starts singing at 2:28

  • I got drafted into the Army in 1972 and this song was called by each one of us the Army song. What good does a good day with sunshine while you're in the Army?

  • Jeep commercial

  • my wife has an album signed by Jonathan Edwards about 33 years ago. Well, in an hour and a half we're going to go see JE again. Local high school, benefit show. Should be fun. Saw this guy a lot in my teens.

  • I found out about this song via a Rockline interview with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. Apparently "Whose Life is it Anyway?" from their latest album was inspired to some degree by this song. Funny how music puts out roots and branches and affects people and what comes of that...

  • Shut up and LISTEN.

  • hey my name is Marisa.. Jonathan Edwards is my great uncle and later I'm going to sing this song and put it on YouTube please view it and comment because if anoff views I'm hoping I could sing with him when he comes back to Minnesota for my grandmas birthday

  • damn, kathy bates can rock the hell out of a drumset.

  • I went to Fishburne Military School with Johnny and he was a good guy but would have mood swings alot of the times and get real Gung Ho.

  • My grandson, Hayden Wayne Cornelious loves you, too!!! Just like his Granny Lynn Melanie Williams! Without you, I will not ever imagine, you life saver!! I love you always, Lynnie th' Pooh aka Waterfall! Kisses and Hugs forever! Bells are ringing! My HERO!!! XOX

  • Song is still relevant today perhaps more so

  • I still liked his story :)

  • Political dissent is a luxury paid for by men much better then they.

  • @charlesburke3 Take that communist bullshit talk somewhere else, you f*&^ing sheep.

  • @DamagedDisciple Take your redreck bigot views to Hell where u belong

  • @silvior47 peace brother

  • @silvior47 Wow! It is the anger & ignorance of you & others like you that continues to land us in these wars & times of trouble. Perhaps you could stop & think about why we are always feeling the need to send our young men & women to die in wars we have absolutely nothing to do with!

  • @silvior47 does anybody know the chords to this song that is upbeat and makes people happy.

Criticism is everywhere and everything and I wish that we could take it as that and not hate. Pray for folks that arent as enlightened as you think you are. Not a prophet, just an 52 yr old talkin. Thanks Johnathan.

  • @charlesburke3 Here's a better quote, though, by Thomas Jefferson that relates:

"Those who spout foolish or dangerous ideas should not be forcibly silenced, but only as a testament to the inherent greatness of the principle of liberty, and not because the ideas themselves have any merit whatsoever."

  • Thanks, this feels good. I was more interested in what this man was saying than the silly stuff that I really should have focused on! Baby Boomers, Hippies, we don't stop being happy, right? Just don't forget to feel for our children, they are so lost. They know y they are individuals, but they can't understand what we thought was so valuable! Maybe they will get it in 15 mins or 15 years, whichever comes first.

  • What an amazing talent by a true folk-type artist not afraid to go his own route in the music world.

  • Most of the anti-war people in the Vietnam days vote Republican now. Those who vote Democrat may not like Obama's lying about stopping the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they'll still vote for him just because he is a Democrat.

  • @Mufaso1000 So.... do you have anything to back up your claims? Just asking, I would like to see that data, it would be interesting to say the least

  • @ParagonCity : Well, the Democrats and Republicans are still in control. Somebody's voting for them. Every anti-war protester I've talked to claimed that their generation gave up after 1972. They realized that burning draft cards, protesting the war, etc. was not going to change anything as long as the dumbass voters continued voting for the same old parties who were keeping up the war! Now THEY are the dumbasses. On the whole, people under 30 do not vote, so who's to blame?

  • @Mufaso1000 There wasn't ever really a democratic and democratically elected President after JFK anyway. They just started to install their NWO with the beginning of those assassinations..

  • @Ningirsutyr : It turned out to be a different world after JFK.

  • I keep going back to this song. I've favorited it and put it in my playlist. I've listened to it 17 times today. I'm addicted!

  • freaking hippie right down to the bare feet LOL!!!!!

    great tune :-)

  • I never knew this was an anti-war song. When it was on the Top 40, I was in junior high and simply liked the guitar work and liked "Emma", the song on the other side of the record... Thank you, MindTV for this!

  • I'll play this over and over when Obama is on his way out...

Can't wait. Shouldn't be long now.

  • @NCat999 Jonathan Edwards wrote this as an Anti-war, Pro liberal song. Just for the record.

  • sucks

  • This song has a strong vibe in my life..................I never knew till i heard this vid just how much, thanks for being U JE

  • This song is so very relevent to today's War that we are in ! The only thing that we do not have is the draft, but the war has no end game of winning !

  • For the ninnie who tried to draw a comparison to the President's health care program and this song. At least good health care for ALL Americans isn't going to kill you like a good old Republican war will.

  • Beautiful Song. Nice Fellow.... I appreciate his genius and good heart.

  • This is such a great song...We don;t have this today.

  • So beautiful !!

  • I love this :)

  • So many great songs by Mr. Edwards and the writers he worked with: Sunshine, Shanty, Bye Bye Blue, Emma, Sometimes, it goes on an on.

It's great to see an old hippie singing anti-war songs, strumming his guitar, pink pants and barefoot. Hang on to that dream, man!

  • This song still works for today for President Barack Hussein Obama and his Medical plan

  • @n1qeh62

Actually...if you listen to what Edwards says at the beginning of the video..he is referring to the Iraq war and that we were lied to and deceived just like in Vietnam...and this song still is fresh even today.

  • @n1qeh62

Yeah, how dare anyone pick on those poor, innocent insurance companies!

I'll admit the Dem's plan is very much flawed, but what did the Republicans do? Other than bend the American people over for a good-old reamin', GW accomplished nothing positive.

Go watch some more Fox News, and come back with more stupid comments for me to mock! I enjoy laughing at your expense.

  • @kmchristian35 How about you name me one accomplishment your messiah Obama has accomplished. And while your at it how about you give me one example of Universal Health care being successful. Go watch some more msnbc you and come back with some more stupid comments I can mock. Liberal drone.

  • @Jakepatriot13

Never said Obama was a messiah. In fact, he's pretty weak! I'm not even a Democrat, but I am an American, and I know we've been screwed (repeatedly).

You, on the other hand, are probably some uneducated back-woods douche bag who is too busy drinking the Glen Beck man juice to even think about what the fuck you're even saying. I never said the Obama plan will work. It's too watered down and too generous to insurance companies.

  • @kmchristian35 Oh!!!!! All apologies!!! Your one of those idiots who can't make up their mind either way. You know I'm still a little shocked at how deep and intelligent your remark really was. "Bend the american people over and give them a good reamin' " Man the words of a true genius. Now are you directly quoting Einstein? Notice how I actually stated facts rather than just calling you an ignorant back-woods fuck.

  • @kmchristian35 I just farted..for the record

  • so is the drummer a guy or a girl?

  • Comment removed

  • @kylemorriss why does it matter?

  • Hi Jonathan

    bless you

    Andy

  • This song popped up in my mind to day. I started thinking about how much I missed the sun. So I don't want the sunshine to go away. Anyway I love this song....

  • Shut up and sing!

  • What a great song! I love it!

  • love this song! does anybody notice the lady or maybe not lady on the bongos? lol just saying they made me laugh

  • ahh...Jon.. why you gotten go ruin the video with the angel shining down...just give yourself and credit and leave the sky daddy out of it...

  • @flya750

I have a feeling that perhaps he wasbeing a little facetious with the angel reference.

  • He is amazing!!!

  • sweet find!

  • saw him in 1977 doing this song!

  • To the one lad who mentioned the lyrics don't make sense. If you had ever had an experience with the draft board I can assure you that dancing was the last thing on your mind. Giving some dude a uniform and rank doesn't do anything to increase his intelligence. They don't get stars & bars for their IQ

  • peace and conscience love to all life~~~

  • Great song, sounded a lot better though 30 years ago.

  • @brando56894 still sounds good.

  • @dimpledick3inch That's not him, it's Jonathan Edwards who just looks... nothing like him. See his heart?

  • It's one of those songs that works for any mood. I never get tired of hearing it.

  • I heard him sing this live on the Stone & Digital Dave Radio Show. He talked less.

  • @pnb1130 whats wrong with you?

  • @pnb1130 , Lifeless, envious, jealous, ignorant bozo who has no talent so he criticizes people who do on a web page for other who enjoy whats presented...Fail

  • @pnb1130 Oh, jealous one. You should do more looking at yourself.

  • @53moreHP just another you tube hard man that doesnt realise that while he was writing his sensless wrong dickish appinion i was round his mums house smashin her dirtbox in while his dad cried in the corner

    all who agree thumbs up!!!!

  • @53moreHP

    fuck you.

  • @53moreHP ur a dickhole licker

  • Great Song of the 70's......

  • It was a different time then...These words are true to what was going on in my life then...Ron - Class of 1970

PS - 'The Man Won' - I ended up chasing Victor Charles for two years...but I made it...Senper Fi.

  • hells yah!

  • shineshine is one of my all time favorites excellent video

    Frankie Yih from GuiZhou, China

  • 2 thessa 1;4-10 brothers and sisters

2cor1;2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • I heard this song a lot on radio WHFS in Maryland when I lived in the US '69 to '71. Very interesting hearing the song again after all those years and the background to it from Jonathon. Great post. Thanks.

  • I love this, thank you Jonathan

  • I didn't know Red Forman was a singer. (dumbass)

  • I understand not wanting violence, however there are those times in life when violence is the "best" solution. I always have to ask what guys like this would have been singing during the revolutionary war, which is ironic because it was the very thing that gave him the freedom to be able to create and sing these types of songs...hmmm.

  • @gwildgoose violence is the answer for only unevolved humans

  • I understand not wanting violence, however there are those times in life when violence is the "best" solution. • @gwildgoose India managed to gain its independence without violence. I figured these "hippies" think if they could gain their freedom from Great Britain with out war, then maybe we could we could be a peaceful nation as well...hmmm, crazy talk

  • He wrote a great song and ton more. 15 albums is no slouch. Get his live one in Cambridge Mass, 1974. If you like folk bluegrass and blues you will dig...

  • goin to see him on the 17 next month!

  • I always loved this song

    Thank you Johnathan

  • geezus it was one damn song, a good one mind, you, but just one, now he's a genius?

  • Who the hell is "comeon224" and how does this imbicile think he can tell a creative genius like Jonathon Edwards what to do. The man is explaining how the song came about and this knucklehead is complaining, go figure.

  • well thanks to these corporate fucking cunts we cant find the original version from the 70s i dont want to see old men remenisce fucking godamn you fucking scum thanks for taking all thats cool and trying to make a buck out out of it goddamn you all to hell

  • I always loved this song, really nice to hear from the songwriter in his words, a piece of history ...1971 and the powers that be still haven't learned war is not the answer !!! " He can't even run his own life I'll be damned if he'll run mine "

  • The song actually starts at 2:35... Just FYI

  • @RedEye20 not shit dude?...i would have never known lol

  • @RedEye20 LOL :) ...

  • This song is so nice! I remember listening to it when I was a kid and never forgot it. Now 40, still loving this song.

  • Always loved this song :o)

  • yes, and he can see dead people, too

  • Awesome!

  • i played guitar with this guy!! he is the man it was an honor to play with him and my uncle

  • I absolutely love his self titled debut album, listen to it all the time.

But I do not like how his voice has aged at all.

  • @jakesever - that is a valid point, my friend, a very valid point.

This song is a moment captured in time, and the two voices do not seem to mesh...

Does not detract from the message, however; at least not in my humble opinion, anyway.

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • That's an awesome album and I knew there was more to this guy than just Sunshine(Go Away Today).

  • I saw him in concert a few weeks ago.... outstanding! What a beautiful man.

  • this fellow is an american hero, the grand pity is that many dont realize his importnance.... he will live in the annals wi men like tom paine to me... a man of common sense....

  • @vanness5, Thom Paine, WOW! What a SWEET ANALOGY! You are a prince/princess amongst mere mortals! (And you snuck in the whole "Common Sense" theme!)

    I tip my m'r f'n cap to your historical/ literary/perceptive capabilities!!!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • YES!!!

  • you told it like it was, j.e...in '71 i was in the marines overseas and we played this song all the time in the barracks...loudly!!!...uncle sam had plenty of cards they weren't showing back then....this is one of the greatest protest songs of all time...thanks for these words...we needed these types of songs to end that f...ing war and pave the road back home for our safe return...peace. bro!...thanks for the post, mindtv35...5 stars!

  • @sirg31, you are a legit vet, my friend, and we owe you a debt of gratitude that most of these punks do not understand.

Real vets are the last breed of heroes that our culture is capable of breeding...

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • wow...thanks for the powerful words...those were very strange times in those years, frank...some of these hippies were vets and protested the loudest to bring their brothers home...some hippies just made noise and other hippies were drafted and are sadly still mia....i just consider myself lucky....very lucky.

  • @sirg31, I hear that, my friend. Have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • Great protest song.

  • i saw jhonathan edwards in willamantic connecticut he was superb

  • it isnt

  • ...what?....

  • I love this version. I remember going to my grandparents house in Wichita Kansas. They had an old record player radio. You know the kind in a console that you had to lift up the lid to get access? I always played Sunshine and the "B" side blue money, Brings back memories..

  • Damn, could anyone possibly look more fried than that bassist. Haha, wonderful song and this interview was more than enough to make me feel guilty about all the elitist things I've said from time to time about artists that only have one big hit. He's so genuine.

  • I love this song, My daughter introduced me to the lyrics when she was 18, she is 46 now. "he can't even run his own life I will be damed if he will run mine" refer to her father. How crazy is it that I have lived my life inflluenced by the lyrics of songs. It has worked for me thus far,

  • also, he seems like such a sweet, genuine man!!! and talent he has. what a good person with a good message. <3

  • Happy 63rd, Jonathan! I'm 45 and must admit I never realized this was an anti-war song. I wasn't exactly sure what it was about, just a toe-tapper that stuck with me over the years and still makes me smile and that ain't too shabby!

  • I love this song. Two of my favorite songs are Sunshine and Brandy by Looking Glass. They just don't have songs like that anymore.

  • so true! i love this song!!! mom used to sing it to me =D

  • The 70's are a haze!

  • Nice Jonathan! Glad to hear you still enjoy performing this great song! Still comes on our classic rock station frequently! I grew up to this and Shanty! Thanks for making great music!

  • I had heard somewhere that Sunshine was recorded as a replacement for another song that got messed up during post production, and they needed another song that day so he busted out Sunshine real quick.

    Sounds pretty lucky to me.

  • I thought it was 1972. Are you sure it's 1971?

  • I too, didn't know that this was a protest song. I just remember it as a nice, simple song that was fun to sing along to.

  • the djembe played in this video looks like my mom haha

  • GREAT SONG

  • Such a lovely song and yet, so powerful. Gee, I didn't know it was a war protest song.

    --

    Remember, Jesus Saves!

  • I didn't know it was a war protest song either.

And here I was at that war protest rally he spoke of ...way back as a young teenager then.

    lol!

  • That's awsome!

    --

    Remember, Jesus Saves!

  • What a great song!
