  • FOR REAL...

    the Carthaginians have 50,000...

    while the Romans have 83,000

  • Man, since the time I first watched this vid (which was a while back) I still have not figured out what the name of the beginning song was. :(

  • Hannibal with his victory which got in Cannae did built the Romain Empire.Without that defeat the Romain could never bult a so Great Empire. The Romain after Cannea battle did learn very well the Hannibal LESSON

  • Hannibal knew how to gain victory but does not know how to use it.

  • Vote up if you think 40 couldn't dream of making a historical video like this.

  • A few of the facts are still debated by historians to this day, however this video was AWESOME. Just amazing work bringing that battle back to life. Although it took about 6 hrs in real life, 10 minutes and doing it on the game is more practical. But this was just epic. Good camera angles, excellent theater, precise display of actual battle tactics, and good music to go along. When I graduate college next spring I'm buying computer that can play this game :).

  • what was the song ar the begining?

  • is this an online battle?

  • is there a way to remove the flags?

  • why is it when a big power loses its because of a mistake like "being inexperienced" why cant they just be the losers and thats it

  • sorry to corect you but his force was 35 thousand not 40

  • @ProductionShark

Sorry to correct you but most modern historians have agreed that Hannibal's army was around 46,000 infantry (40,000 heavy, 6,000 light) and 10,000 cavalry.

  • @TheDarkFrontier i must of missed were he said that i didnt see were he stated the romans numbers

  • @TheDarkFrontier it depends witch historians you go with on hannibals army most ive gotta go with the historions who state that it was 40000 light and 6000 heavy/ his libyens as more than half the bulk of his army were spanish mercerneys witch only woar light armour and a smalll shield with a curved sword

  • @TheDarkFrontier

yes u are right. Remeber also that the cavarly (numidian in particullary) was the precious part of cartaginian army.

Yes i think that Cannae is one of the bloodiest battles in history. 80k men died in only one days....it is impressive that roman state survived at this defeat. Hannibal was the greatest general in history, better even of Alexander the Great for me. :-)

  • @ave92me

in this battle died also 80 Senators... now if we had similar politics we would conquer all universe...

  • @ave92me Belisarious was the Best General in history.

  • @ave92me Flavious Belisarious was the Best General in history.

  • @ProductionShark

There was a mistake in the Roman's though, the video states 50,000, but it was approaching 86,000.

  • its so sad :(

  • My ffavourite is Romans. (well im JuliusCaesar in RTW so its suprise) Second is Armenia 3. Is Greeks 4. is Carthage 5. is Macedon 6. is Seleudics

  • Anyone else wish there were large open fields/spaces like in Rome total war maps in real life?

  • @Legolasas26

there are, there are just less than there used to be

  • @Legolasas26 I'm guessing you failed geography 101.

  • Of course Rome lost battles, so has every Empire but Rome always bounced back from defeats. Romes demise was due to internal rot more than military defeats. In my opinion the Roman Empire had the most conflicts and enemys of any Empire in history and i am amazed it lasted as long as it did.

  • very interesting. I've never seen a video battle before

  • very nice work.... hope you make more like this

  • I like this battle

So you can see that having the largest army isn't always the best.

It's how you use the army against your opponent.

And knowing your strenghts and the weakenesses of the enemy.

  • Yep great vid

  • Joe Mozzi and Mike Warren, Bravo for this masterful depiction of the battle. Your eye for tactical realism and formation flexation shows you see past the geometric historical descriptions of Roman formations.Anyway, I really think you guys deserve an A on this. Koodos of course to the existing software but as a spectator I can see you did a lot of work and showed the highest possible realism. Can you make one for Caesar's greatest battle, the battle of Alesia? I'll be your first fan.

  • God I wish someone one send me a link to the name of the song in the beginning.

  • This was EPIC. Great work!

  • Hannibal didnt have elephants anymore duirng cannae...they were already all kaput

  • Very good job! I should be proud, you did a wounderful jog over here Blackspartan ;)

  • best RTW vedeo ive seen

  • how is the last song called?

  • can somebody plz help me my RTW doesnt work plzz i need help it says that they allready detected a RTW what i have to do

  • brill vid i can see youve watched alexander revisted judging by the soundtrack at 4:32 its when he fights at gargumela

  • This was the biggest defeat in Roman history ever.

  • not quite it was the greastest of it's time but a few other did surpass it. I like Hannibals Victory at Lake Trasiemre better as it was won before the swords were even draw.

  • yeah, it's right up there along with the battle of Teutoburg Forest

  • Yeah, but the Romans learned quickly from this.

  • everything is correct.

    :-)

  • roman blood and guts and willing to sacrifice smashed carthage into dust long live rome

  • Great movie. Really well made. Although not completely accurate it is masterfully edited. Kudos

  • This is a very good movie. 10+ !! I have only one question : HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS FILM?? WHAT PROGRAM DID YOU USE?....PLEASE INFORM ME..!! I WANNA MAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS TOO.

  • its from rome total war. im not sure if he use or there is a mod to make vids.

  • he used the game Rome Total War.. Its an awsome game

  • very well done

  • 86000 Romans @ cannae...not 50000

  • From what i've read hannibal didn't position his troops into a crescent they were pushed into that formation when the heavy legionaries pushed into his center. and a river was to the back of one or the other, nobody is sure which side it was on.

  • romans walked to there enamy and ran the last few yard in offence so they didnt get tired carring 50 pounds of armour

  • hannibal put weak troops in the centre and heavy troops in the flanks. the weak soldiers felt back and the romans were following them, so the strong soldiers from the flanks could attack them.

  • Hannibal asked more power to destroy rome , he asked from Carthage Parliament senat, which strongly rejects categorically wars of Hannibal , Because Carthage

Was originally a Commercial civilization, not military expansionist

familly Barca think seriously about the danger of this new city in the other side ( rome )

it was a mistake blatantly political

and was zig seriously existence to Carthage

  • It's Hard to say how much the Carthagians supported Hannibal at the begining. The war was declared in the 104 (Carthagian Senate) to a Roman delegation. The lack of a port and the inifectness of the Carthagian Navy have often been sighted as reasons for the lack of support for Hannibal.

  • reakkt impressive made.

i dont know the name of the song, but i know its in the movie 'Gladiator'

  • whats this song?

  • i haven't seen until 0:35 but did you remember to make youre line bow sided with the belly facing out wards?

  • Awesome dude, you are a great, I had a big problem of making the battle of Cannae but you really made it, well done sir!

  • really good video. The cavalry charge reminded me of the charge of the rohirrim at the battle for minas tirith. Funny.

  • I'm about 90% sure Blackspartan didn't make this video. You could download it on totalrome(dot)com a few years ago. The maker's name was Joe Mozzi and I'm quite certain it's not Blackspartan. Please change the description and credit the maker instead of taking credit for it.

  • I read somewhere that of all Hannibal's elephants only 1 actually made it across the alps, is this correct?

  • no, 10

  • no i am pretty sure it was his own elephants maybe he got some later on

  • All the elephants, except 1, died back in 218 BC, about 2 years before the battle. It was the fact his army was a vetran force and had great conferdance in his own abilties. Varro Plan was sound and may very well of suceeded but it turned outto be Hannibals day.

  • that great

  • I think that all 37 elephants suvired the trip but all but 1 died after the 1st battle due to the cold. Hannibal rode the last elephant thought the marshes in 217BC in while he was Turning Flaminus strageic flank.

  • What is the name of the song at 08:09.Please someone answer!

  • You have been very inspired with the music.Very nice video!!

  • Wow, this is truly amazing, what a great job!

Not even the BBC Documentaries depicted the Battle of Cannae as clearly and correctly as this. Thank you!

Is there a really good quality of this somewhere?

  • No because the site Blackspartan downloaded it from is gone.

  • Gread Work. 5*

  • great video!!RTW the best!great choice of music

  • This is an excellent video. Accurate and compelling, well done.

  • Wow dude, this is probably the best RTW video I've EVER seen, you've got to make another one. Maybe do one about the Battle of Gaugamela.

  • Rome burned Carthage to the ground :)

  • this game is awesome(i have too) and can stop playng it i love carthage as a faction they are my favorites rest factions i like the barbarian factions(dacia, gauls, britons)and eastern factions.Ok one single mistake Hannibal in this battle fought as an infatry men exactly in the front of his troops to give them morale. But in rest this movie was epic nice job

  • Nice to haave the idea that he thought at the front but that was probably wrong, nice for the movies but he would probably be on a hill nearby commanding his troops as becasue if he was at the front then men would have targeted him, he wouldnt be able to watch the flanks, but nice idea :P

  • that was an amazing vid i am a big fan of Hannibal Barca i have looked up so much about him and i love his story ill give that a 10/10 the music was amazin aswell m8 breat vid

  • Im pretty sure they were not forced

  • lol - there troops which could'nt be used by the roman commanders because their first appear was about a few hundred years later..

    but very nice video :!

  • the Romans had around 80,000 and lost 50000 and im quite sure there were less cathiginians

  • carl off carmina burana

  • what is the name of the song when the romans advanced???

  • Hannibal like Alexander before him were Lions amongst men. They truely are the classical and most celebrated soldiers in man's long and destructive warrior history. *Lets out the paen war cry in thier honour*

  • i got the game 2 months ago and i cant stop playin this game rules

  • Google Europa Barbarorum. It's a total modification for the game that makes it way cooler. Also search for a mod called Rome Total Realism and other small mods, you may like them.

  • Extremely well done 10/5 XD

I always try to do the battle of Cannae but I always f*ck up...

  • how do u zoom in and out

  • Mouse wheel....

  • Must...play...Rome...Total...War...NOW!!!

  • very nice job

  • The romans had much more than50 000 man

    de Formations are wrong

and the generals are aemilius and varro ;)

  • true

  • didnt hannibal army kill like 70,000 romans in one day from some battle

  • Most historians agree that Rome took the field with not much less than 90,000 men, made up of 8 Legions, their auxilliaries, allies and cavalry numbering around 6,500. Opposing them, the Carthaginians had about 27,000 heavy infanty, 6,000 light infantry and 8,000 cavalry. The Carthaginian army was made up of many different nations, bands and factions. All that united them was.....Hannibal himself.

The entire destruction of the Roman army at Cannae is still the bloodiest battle ever fought.

  • Not directly. it is perhaps one of the blodiest fought on one day but there were more casulties in Somme for example.

  • i hate the first music

  • great work

  • which map?

    5stars dude

  • lol the music of the movie "alexander"

  • this was okay

  • i watched this in history calss yester day

  • i totally agree this wasn't worth watching

  • Does anyone know the name of the song?

  • the 1st song i dont know but the 2nd is "O fortuna"

  • How did you get the Romans to cooperate? I've been trying to do Cannae for months and the Romans always move too quickly. I nver have time to defeat their cavalry then encircle them I just have to fight them all at once.

  • I think you have to let your center rout yet you must defeat the flanking cavalry then let the reserve fight the pursuing Romans. Encircle them with your cavalry then destroy them.

  • Just goes to show how awesome Hannibal truely was.

  • Awesome video. WOW, you are really good in doing this. Bravo!!! Make some more of them.

  • EPIC FAIL! ( i mean the romans not the video^^)

    video was great!

  • very nice editing and narrating, just the quality was crap, lol

shouldve put it on high quality, then it would be perfect

    I really liked it

  • lol hannibal lost when he faced his own tacitcs / strategies, i think after so many victorys he was starting to not worry about to loose but then that was why he got defeated he didnt think that scip was that smaaart, I THINK:D

  • Hannibal knew how to gain a victory, but not how to use it.

  • Mention the quotation author's name, when you write it.

  • i cudnt remember who it was haha

  • Maharbal. Hanibal's cavalry commander.

  • Mago and Gisco, Hannibal's infantry commanders

  • thank you

  • The Romans should have done the only sensible thing at Cannae - leave the hastati and principes to fight and win in the center and place the triarii on the flanks to counter Hanibal's cavalry. Given that it was light cavalry, as long as the triarii are not outmanouvered, they will at least check, if not defeat the cavalry

  • God, i love the Numidian Cavalrys charge at the end ;) Pure LotR Style :D

  • wait so what mod do you need for this historic battle?

  • Great video! Some incorrect historical details, the Carthaginians had killed like 60,000 romans (only 50,000 on the field?) but you can't really take these discriptions accurate because it happend over 2000 years ago. You should make more remakes.

  • The song in the beginning is called O Fortuna i love the song too!

  • What is the song called, it starts at the middle of the skirmishing, its from Alexander I LOVE THAT SONG!! help me

  • SHIT QUALITY

  • nice video! i have tryed to copy the battle of cannea in rtw but the enemies stand in a stright line and i canr surrend them, nice vid!

  • hanibal did not have spearmen withh the ability of falanx

and they didn't used elephants (sorry for my spelling i'm not english but i'am belgian and i'm only 13 years old)

  • MISTAKE , big mistake!! hannibal had Elephants

  • yes but he dind't used it during cannae

  • how the hell do you know little kid?? were you there?? no, noone was so noone actually knows and can actually prove it, you remake is irrelivant

  • not accurate 100,000 romans 50,000 mercenarys and no elephants

  • they were at leats like 87000 romans not 50000

  • Nice video

  • very shit quality cant even rad most parts. 2/10

  • shit quality

  • nice battle of cannae 5000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000out of 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

  • Im so sorry : I know this battle very well and this is incorrect Carthage were stationary in there trademark crecent formation: The legions of rome all forced there center and the stronger inf of Carthage were pushed around romes flanks and surrounded them , meanwhile Hannibal was trying to battle with the unexperinced roman cavalry. Hannibal's cav one and just crashed into romes inf creating huge chaos

  • they guy was 75% correct, u covered the rest. on thing i would add though is tht hannibal planned the romans to break through his centre by puttin his weakest infantry there and then exploited the fact romans were taught to fight forwards. the guy was a genious

  • hail Hanibal!

  • hmm at the battle of cannea the romans were 85000 men strong 8 legions

  • ^

    Cura

    Q.

  • this video suck ! in the true story carthagian got owned by the roman and hanibal got decapitated

  • well...

  • really? he didn't get owned dude .

  • of course he didn't check my channel for the true epic battle of cannae

  • he poisoned himself in modern turkey so that assasins could not have the satisfacion of killing him it was on the history channel earleyer

  • haha you dont know anything... in the battle hannibal defeated 50 000 romans.

  • 80k

  • he killed 50k

  • wtf is this song called lol the very foirst one :P

  • you must take 7 Hastati ,6 Principes , 5 Triarier and 2 Equites (light cav)for Rome.

4 Phoeni-Infantery,2 Iberien-Infantery and 3merc barbarian Infantery ,2 longshield cav (medium cav ),1 merc barbarian cav (light cav),2 merc numidian cav (medium cav) for Carthage

  • i liked the music at the very beggining but the truth is the actually carthaginians looks way different in that video the just looked like greeks well i guess they kind of looked carthaginian but good game though ive played it but then i died bcuz it was an ilegaly downloaded game lol good video ;)

  • what was the name of the very first song?

  • Seems to be a guitar version of Chopin's Largo Prelude in C minor

  • why does the carthaginian cavalry look basically greek? or were they influenced by the greeks?

  • theres nothing historical about it. the light clothing is just supposed to show that they are poor mercanries... the programers didnt want to take time "culturalizing" them

  • dude they were kind of a little bit looking alike lol maybe just a lil? xD

  • Carthage fought the pre marius roman army, and they only had a few elephants left after they crossed the alps.

  • Well done.

  • ye and there would of been better looking men english french german dam ugly guys pink blond spotty wir bold paches

  • this is ridiculous...

  • One has to speculate what type of world we would have if Hannibal had destroyed the city of Rome after completely destroying her entire army. Perhaps the Black Africans of Carthage could have provided a "kinder and gentler" world than the Roman Empire did over the next 700 years.

  • and what of the renaissance that originated in italy??

  • What about it? I'm confused..

  • Carthaginians weren't Africans. Carthage was settled by phoenicians from Tyre in the 900's BC.

Most of us wouldn't be speaking the same language as they are now, nor would we be in the places they are now. There would be no US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, or Italy and Eastern powers (Parthia, Carthage, China, Egypt, etc...) would probably dominate the globe. Christianity wouldn't have spread, and maybe even wouldn't have started at all.

The world would be a very different place.

  • this is an unhistorycal rapresentation..the arms aren't correct and the armies desposition isn't correct

  • There werent any Warelefants in Cannae
