I've seen this film by Visconti-&--except for the exceptional production values (granted) I was really disapointed by it--it just wandered all over the place. Berger LOOKED exactly like Ludwig but his performance was dull and out of focus, if that is possible. The actress portraying Sisi was the best actor!!! The biggest bomb of a movie I've seen!! A new one needs to go into production to truly capture this unique King's life--and also his sexual life--which Visconti, who was gay, avoided!
@windstorm1000 um, visconti's version does not avoid ludwig's gay leanings. just because there wasn't explicit shagging all over the place doesn't mean he avoided it.
@windstorm1000 well it is true that there was only one very chaste gay kiss (and that was silhoutted in shadow i think) but it was obvious why he wanted these men around, and his feelings for them. I don't think kissing was necessary?
@windstorm1000 i know its part of who he was, but kissing etc is not always needed in film to show desire etc. As i see it, i understood Ludwig's homosexual nature the way visconti has chosen to show it. Kissing/sex scenes wouldn't really have added anything, when it is already easy to construe from what is onscreen that these men are wanted by/lovers to Ludwig.
@IluvKenji and what about straight couples/movies? yes, I can see your point of view a bit--as a gay man, I personally would have enjoyed a bit more intimacy. And I have to disagree--kissing/hugging (I didn't say sex) would have added something--my opinion vs. yours. a new movie on this great king, I know in my heart, will include more.
@windstorm1000 whether if it was a straight or gay couple i feel that, if the director is talented enough and the story/actors good enough then the words, looks etc can say much more than a kiss. and, i know you didn't mention sex scenes, but the use of them is often vulgar and uneeded.
Damn those adverts at the beginning of videos !! Helmut Berger must rank as one of the most beautiful men in the world. He gave his finest performance here and I am still in love with him now after so many years...............simply takes my breath away.
Oh yes you are right, I have that film too, it was really different take on Dorian Grey and Berger was the perfect actor for that role. Everything seemed different then..the world had men like Alain Delon and Helmut Berger and now it is all gone. Well, all I can say is thank God they are preserved on film. I'm glad you like this video, Ludwig is a wonderful film and his performance is astonishing.
Heartbreakingly beautiful man.....there will never be anyone to touch him. One of my all time favourite films.......I sigh to those Helmut Berger days back again.
@schmoe23 LOL ! Those 3 are far from being as perfect as Helmut at his peak. Helmu is helmut, nobody looks like him. he is the epitome of perfection. And the only human being to have reach that. ( both women and men ).
I've never seen this in my life, until now. I know of Ludwig but not this movie or the actor. Amazing piece that you've put together with the clips and music choice.
As a Bavarian - still loyal to his royal highness, King Ludwig II, since he didn't abdicate - and born less than 800 meters from where he had died: Helmut Berger for my generation was the absolute King Ludwig! I never cared much for Visconti or his works, but his was just brilliant! Thanks for uploading!
This is his role. I can't imagine Ludwig without his face and movements anymore. How he depicts the burning love for music and the tragedy of desperate loneliness and fall...
This is a wonderful video. The song is very emotional and you used the clips very well. Ludwig's life is so sad. I feel like you really captured the tone of his character-- a beautiful tortured soul. Well done! I really wanna see this movie!
Could you upload some of the scenes with English subtitles perhaps? I can't find any. :( please make mobile friendly! :D

@IluvKenji You mistconstrued what I was saying. How about kissing a man? His lover? And he had several---I looked in vain for this in the film.

La recitazione di Helmut Berger è veramente lodevole, non c'è che dire, Ludwig è stato qui interpretato egregiamente.
