The characters they play most resemble is that of the Decavalcante crime family out of New Jersey, but the show is not based on them, just storys put into the series through a few episodes.

@TheSoccerstar123456 No, it's a documentary. What happens in the show is real footage, and they put on guises so that people think otherwise. Tony Soprano puts on the guise of "James Gandolfini" so that he can walk around the streets without being hassled.
