If you look at my dioramas they are built to scale, I build them all to scale so they look like a small version of the original. You will notice I use very few Jada vehicles in my dioramas because their scale is way off compared to other diecast and model companies and that would effect the overall appearance. Even the 2” x 4” studded walls and 2” x 6” rafters are to scale and spaced just like the real thing in my dioramas, this gives it the realistic look and feel.
@HowToMakeADiorama Very true. Your structures have captured the feel of the real thing, and I suspect those scale rulers are very useful tools in accomplishing this. Good point about some brands of diecasts. Even though they may be very nicely proportioned, they may not be exact 1/xx scale (usually larger) than as on the packaging. Thanks for making these vids.
I believe the most difficult part of building any structure is trying to find a happy medium in "scale appearance". Look at many 2 bay auto shop dios and you will notice the cars are almost touching the front and rear walls, much like a cramped home garage. (try doing repairs in THAT limited space). Yet, if you take actual measurements from the 1:1 structure, you may find you have far too much open space / height, and once again, risk losing some of the realistic "feel" of the overall diorama.
Hardboard, you can get it at your local Home Depot or Lowe's they sell it in 2' x 4' sheets so you don't have to buy a whole 4' x 8' sheet. Dig through the sheets or look at the ends it comes in many different shades depending on the supplier. I used the textured side toward the inside, I like that look it gives an older building material look & that way the smooth shiny side is covered by the siding.
