Essentially, Red Jack was using the agony he'd extract from each individual butterfly (arguably refering to human souls; butterflies being emblematic of the same) to sustain his metaphysical potency while imprisoned. At lest I think that's the basic premise behind that character point: it's been a while since I read the issue.

The reason Jack died was that he feeds on pain and that while in his house the butterflies don't die, but suffer endlessely . And when they escape, there is no pain left .
